2018-2019 University of Iowa (Carver)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you to the 4 people who have already withdrawn from the OOS waitlist! I wish you best of luck wherever you're headed.

Alternate list today, OOS. Hopeful that it might turn into an acceptance! I really appreciate how Iowa actually tells you your rank. So transparent!!

Rejected Just now, Interviewed in Oct OOS LM ~79. Disappointed but not surprised, didn't have a great interview. Congrats to those accepted!!!

Final pooled as well. Just to clarify, final pool is not the same as waitlist, in the sense that in a waitlist, there are no spots available, and you are just waiting for someone to drop. My understanding is that Carver holds spots open specifically for final pool, so you still have a fair shot at acceptance (but also may be WL or R)
Just to add some information. Final pool your application is reviewed a second time and given a score in several categories and then a total score. The following is a proposed list a categories from last years forum.

    1) MCAT
    2) sGPA/cGPA
    3) Clinical Experience
    4) Interview
    5) Personal Statement/Secondaries
    6) Volunteering

After review in the final pool you have three possibilities
    1) Accepted
    2) Denial
    3) Waitlist: There are separate waitlists for both IS and OOS applicants. The IS is 50 spots and OOS is 100 spots. OOS waitlist spots seem to be strange in how many end up matriculating to CCOM and it has been as low as 4 and as high as 90 in years past. IS is a little more consistent, here’s the past few years:
    2017- 29 spots
    2016- 19 spots
    2015 - 31 spots
    2014 - 24 spots
    2013 - 28 spots
    2012 - 31 spots
    2011 - 24 spots
Im literally right in the middle of these numbers ahhhh

Rejected post Jan interview. I did like the school but I can't say I was super optimistic about getting in after my interview. Still glad to have gone!

Are OOS students considered OOS for all 4 years for tuition purposes?

Yes. You cannot become IS after matriculating to the school. Also, your financial aid package stays pretty much the same for each year (mine has been the same all 4 years).

Also, congrats to all the newly accepted people. If you have any Iowa questions and want to ask a current student, feel free to post or send me a message.

My plans have changed slightly as of yesterday as did many of yours and I know it's still early, but anyone who is accepted/knows they will matriculate here is looking for a roommate, feel free to PM me.

Alternate as well. Sigh. I saw that an OOS waiterlister from last year made it in all the way from 33. I hope I get the chance to scream “started from the bottom, now we here”. Good luck to all you guys still in the running at both Iowa and other schools!
just curious how far down are you....?

Shout out to current students.... Recommendations for where to live would be most appreciated!
Amen to that! I’m likely going to Iowa next year and I’m looking for cat-friendly, relatively upscale 1-2 bedroom apts in the area.

+3! I already live in Iowa City, but if anybody knows what the best place for getting to both Carver and the hospital is, I'm all ears!

Hey, does anyone know if there is a class of 2023 facebook page. I cant seem to find it if there is one.

There are some nice, fairly expensive apartments within walking distance of the MERF and hospital. These can be found on Newton, Valley and Lincoln near Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Some of them are only a few years old and nicely appointed, others are older - but you will pay for the convenience of only a couple block walk.

Several students I know live at the Aspire complex. It also is fairly new - but it is not really walking distance. The bus runs from Aspire and will drop you off near the MERF. Cheaper apartments/rental homes are available around Iowa City, Coralville or North Liberty etc. You will likely need to drive, and unless you want to pay full Newton ramp prices, some of the remote parking is also on the bus line.

Maybe someone else has some more suggestions.

If you do opt to drive, is there parking on the medical school campus? how does that work?

I’m not a med student right now, but I work on campus. I live in Coralville and take the research park Cambus to get on campus. The Cambus is free to ride and if you park in research park, which is off of coral ridge avenue in Coralville, the parking is free. I find this is a really good option if you want to live in Coralville or North Liberty for a less busy area/cheaper rent. Also, it’s really nice being able to relax on the way to work and not worry about driving in traffic. The research park bus stops right in front of MERF.

One thing to add. I live about 3 miles from campus but on a reliable bus route. It allowed me to buy an affordable house and several Med and PA students rent in my area. Iowa City is also pretty bikeable. If you live in IC or Coralville you can probably find an apartment on a bus route or within biking distance. Taking the bus from North Liberty is much more difficult.

You pay quite a bit to park on campus. If you want to park at Newton Road you’re probably looking at $20 a day. You can get a pass to park in a lot and then take a bus to MERF. That’s much more affordable. You can look the rates up on the University Parking website. Just google it. They also have the rates for bus passes.

There are commuter lots with student passes on the West (Finkbine Lot) and East (Hancher lot) sides of the hospital. These prices can be seen here Student Parking Rates | Parking and Transportation

Unfortunately these lots are about a 25 minute walk from MERF, so a short 3-5 minute shuttle ride is needed to get to MERF. This is a plight that all employees and students who don't live within bus routes face.

Aspire is new, nice, and takes cats, but you need to take a bus to campus.

In general if you want to bus, look up the Iowa City and Coralville bus routes and look near their routes. Of course renting within walking distance or Cambus distance is nice, but costly - like @ChicagoBear said.

One nice offering is when you get to rotations where you need to be in at 5AM (looking at you surgery), you can get a discounted parking garage/ramp pass in 6 week blocks (At $27 a week) that is at MERF (Newton road ramp).

Also, it is hard to answer the question of "where should I live?", but if anyone has any listings they want an opinion on, I would be glad to take a look.

Congrats to all new members of the Carver family! Re: housing

Iowa is pretty unique in that it has two co-ed medical student fraternities. These are great housing options that are super reasonable with cost and provide the priceless benefit of sage advice from students in upper years of school. Lots of amenities are included with both houses. Both are also a very reasonable walking commute to the med school as well as the hospital.

Alpha Kappa Kappa (AKK) has 24 residents from a number of graduate health science disciplines and rotates a number of short term domestic and foreign students doing rotations at the hospital. They include breakfast stuffs, a gym, parking, utilities (water, electricity, internet, etc), and more for $400/mo. They are approximately 1 mile from the med school. Learn more at University of Iowa | AKK Medical Fraternity | Iowa City.

Phi Rho Sigma (Phi Rho) has 23 residents who are primarily medical students and sometimes hosts rotating students as well. They have similar amenities to AKK with the addition of provided lunches and dinner from their cook included with their rent for $580/mo. They are the first house off of the university property across from the medical school. Learn more at Home | Phi Rho Sigma Mu Chapter.

Nike, I don't seem to be able to PM you. Or I simply can't figure it out. In either case, another incoming student and I are looking for a third roommate if you're still looking.

Hello everyone! Has anyone noticed any movement of the IS alternative list? Wondering what you all are seeing.

Hello everyone! Has anyone noticed any movement of the IS alternative list? Wondering what you all are seeing.

I'm OOS, but we have had at least 10 people withdraw from the alternate list already. (Assuming that at this point these are withdrawals from the list, versus acceptances)

Ive moved two spots as well. Im currently at 23, so it is a very close call for me. I got bored and used the last 8 years of data and created a Normal probability curve. Im sitting at like 60-70% chance of acceptance haha.

It’s 2 for me as well. I started at 40 IS. I don’t need to calculate it out to know it’s basically 0% chance of me getting in, but it’s kinda fun to watch the waitlist movement.

OOS in the top 10. No movement for me. I don't know what the chances of getting in are but I'm nervously checking literally every day :S

Have two good friends in my class who came off the OOS list in mid-40s their application year. Good luck to all you in the middle zone!

Do you recall how long it took from them to go from mid-40s to accepted? I’m deciding between other schools and I’d hate to receive the good news only after I’ve signed a lease elsewhere

It varies a lot year to year, so unfortunately I can't give you a great day. The most movement you will see will be the week or so after traffic day whenever that is now. With the OOS list, it really changes year to year how much movement follows. Would sit tight till then and reassess after the week following traffic day.

I have moved up 3 spots on the in-state alternate list. Given that I was placed on the list on March 7th, I am averaging one movement per week this month. Does anyone know if this mimics movement in years past? I know April will be the primary month for movement, but I am curious about how March typically goes.
