Can confirm. Seeing other people post about their acceptances on here is the most anxiety inducing part of the process. It fills you up with hope only to keep crushing it each day. Definetly the worst part of the whole application process

Yea you and sadasian were on the alternate list last year so it is going to.be a very long month and a half Just workout and work on bettering yourself in other ways is what I am doing.

I’m actually in a much better position now than I was last year haha so I’m not freaking out about this at all.

I credit Oreos and memes for helping me maintain my sanity through last cycle 😛

For anyone who was accepted or made it farther this cycle, what did you do to improve your application for next cycle? Especially for VCU. I was rejected last Monday after my application was put on hold for possible acceptance or wait list.

I'm out of school so what are some opinions? Continue working as an EMT or ER tech, community service, more exposure to Healthcare, etc.? Any input is appreciated.

It’s probably easier to answer this if we know what your application was like

Having experience with underserved communities (both in healthcare and outside of it) will only help your application. So I would try to get as much of that as possible.

3.93 BCPM and regular gpa
505 mcat
Maybe 100 hours community service
Medic in Army Reserve for 5 years with two major humanitarian missions providing care to underserved populations
Worked on an ambulance for about 1000 hours
Zero research
Out of school for two years

Thanks for the input! I'll probably do some work with the food bank and volunteer rescue squad.

Research would probably help as well

I would look into more community service for sure since VCU is big on that and research would be something to look into as well

I'd work on increasing your community service hours along with thinking about a possible MCAT retake. Your GPA is stellar, but your MCAT score is holding you back imo. Solid ECs though otherwise. Research isn't necessarily a requirement, but you gotta fill in some gaps if you're not going to have it.

Anyone have any recommendations on getting involved in research out of school? I would love to do that I just don't know where to turn.

Thanks I'll work on the community service for sure. It took me a few months of studying to get that mcat and I'm working too much now to commit to a study plan. I feel like I'd probably do worse or only slightly better. And honestly I don't know if I could stand doing that process again.

Thanks again for all the help everyone

If you're set on not taking the MCAT again, but definitely want to become a physician no matter what I'd consider applying DO next cycle as well. With that GPA and your ECs, I definitely think you'd have success. They are also more forgiving with the lack of research. MD isn't out of the picture at all, but if you want to maximize your chance of success and want to start med school ASAP then it's worth thinking about.

Maybe look into NIH post-bac/research programs.

EDIT: you have to be able to commit for at least a year tho.

+1 definitely should retake MCAT if you're trying for MD schools.

I agree, and cannot stress enough how important non-clinical volunteering is for VCU. The AdComs talk about it alllll the time, and said that during M1 year they have you do a lot of community service & clinics with underserved populations, so definitely work on increasing that if you are interested in VCU.

Anyone know when we could expect WL movement this year?
Looks like at least until 04/01/19. last year for the reddit premed waitlist acceptance tracker, 5 people got off the waitlist from 04/23 to 05/14, 4 of those being OOS and 1 being IS. I am going to assume that the IS waitlist moves very little compared to OOS waitlist.

They also have summer research opportunities at NIH but longer engagements I'm sure look better

Historically it definitely seems like OOS moves much more than IS waitlist. I'm wondering how the trafficking differences this year will affect that though. I feel like this year will be particularly hard to predict.

I don't think the change will affect the number of oos vs is normally taken. The whole reason there is normally more oos movement is because oos students choose their instate schools, which shouldn't be affected by the change in the multiple acceptance report

I think I saw that in one of the past cycles, someone got accepted about a week after WL notifications. You're probably right about April 1, but fingers crossed for early movement this year!

There is an increased probability that more IS applicants will decline this year than in year's past, due to VCU's lack of insight into the other schools that applicants have been accepted to. Previously they were more inclined to accept someone with no acceptances versus someone that already has one (was told this on my interview date). I think both will see more movement.

prob a dumb question, but do VCU rank us when forming the alternative list or after receiving our response to being on the alternative list?

So they would be more inclined to accept someone with no acceptances vs none? Wouldn't that be foolish? A school should want the best possible students.

Having an acceptance doesn't mean someone is a better student, is more intelligent, or even more capable of handling medical school. It just means that they fit the mission of another school well enough to garner an acceptance. It also comes down strictly to luck sometimes with who reviews your file prior to an interview invite.

Edit: My reading comprehension is trash.

Certainly. But I was referring to jpvn2015 how a school would choose someone without an acceptance over someone who does. Whether one is accepted to any school or has no acceptances should not matter. Though I do agree with the school in collecting that data anyways since it could be a useful data point.

I agree with you on that for sure! I probably just misinterpreted the discussion.

I will just say this. I went back and looked at interview invites, acceptances and such and OOS people report it way more than IS people. While we are all speculating I will throw my hat in the ring: I think more OOS people post on sdn than IS. I think just because less IS people post WL movement on here does not mean that it moves much slower than than OOS. I believe it to be reporting bias. But that’s just my speculation haha.

Oh, I see what you're saying now. I misinterpreted what you were saying my bad! The only thing I could think of would be to protect their yield because you know for a fact that the person who doesn't have any acceptances is going to take it while the other person may turn the acceptance down.

Lol yep no worries. This is not CARS.

R just now - seems like the cycle is ~officially~ over on the pre-II side for vcu so best wishes to everyone!

That is horrible and really needs to be addressed immediately. But according to the article it was not at the Medical School right?

The medical school is part of VCU. Agreed that VCU needs to adress this incident now. And yet...

“Black reported the alleged incident to the university in December 2018.”

This is really concerning

School policy is that they don't release information about investigations, including whether or not one is happening. Nonetheless, the article confirms both Title IX and police investigations. Ms. Black and her family declined to comment further, so please respect her privacy. These investigations take a long time, so there's no need to demand more information than what we already know -- we will certainly hear if VCU/Richmond police don't hold Wilder accountable.

If we got an acceptance to a different school recently, should we somehow relay that to VCU since it was on their waitlist survey? I don't want to annoy them but at the same time I don't want it to appear like I lied on the survey.
Seems up to your discretion. You aren't obligated to disclose such since you answered the question accurately at the time, but the honesty wouldn't hurt your cause.
