2018-2019 Wayne State University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know I was also checking the tracker so I was surprised. The admissions lady said it tonight in the google hangouts. They sent out 350 II and are going to interview about 1000-1200
Holy ****. That’s a ton of people. Is that higher than last year? I think msar said somewhere in the 800s. I wonder if the new aamc rules have something to do with it.

Did Anyone get any other useful information from the hangout?

I'm not 100% sure on the exact number of people interviewed last year but I thought it was around 900-950 or so. Definitely not 1200. :wideyed:

anyone know the post-interview historical acceptance rate for OOS?
An adcom on another thread said that very little of the post II acceptance data is applicable to the current cycle due to the new rules in play so whatever it was may not apply to us this time around

could SC stand for complete? like they finished reviewing and it's not longer SS (in process)

can someone please explain the new rules thing?

From my understanding, AMCAS starting this cycle will no longer notify medical schools of how many acceptances an applicant has. As a result, some schools will be accepting only the maximum number of students to fill their class and have a lot more people on the waitlist, unlike before where they can accept more people, given the assumption that applicants with multiple acceptances might withdraw. Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but this was how I understood it.

Wow... I wonder what prompted the change...

The VCU dean said it was a student who felt he should have been accepted to more schools but wasn't because of his other acceptances

Has anyone found any reputable sources (i.e. AAMC website) which talks about this change? Other than through word of mouth and what I have read from here, I have yet to see anything written about this, and it would be nice to have a credible written source that confirms. I also do wish they did inform us of this change, especially given the impact it's having/going to have on this admission cycle.
And why they made the change (what is the benefit of doing so) would be nice to know as well.

lol they wouldn't want to throw that student under the bus tho....

There was apparently a lawsuit by an applicant who felt that it was unfair that he didn’t get an acceptance from certain schools cause they could see he got an acceptance from another school and decided he wouldn’t come to theirs anyway.

There’s probably more to this, but this is what I’ve gathered so far

This is one of the most obnoxious and entitled things I have ever heard. People like this just make me annoyed at the type of people I might be working with in the future.

Ya but At the same time though, it really sucks that whether you're offered an acceptance or not comes down to whether adcoms ''think'' you'll accept it or not. Applicants put in a lot of effort and money into this process yet still may not get into a school because a group of people who've most likely never met you make assumptions about you and what you might do

I honestly feel like the change is for the better, though. Imagine is a student applies to their undergrad state school (their #1 choice) and a reach school. Let's say that the student actually gets accepted to their reach. Now, some schools would just assume that the student probably wants to go to the reach school, and maybe only applied to their undergrad state school as a safety. Hence, to ~protect their yield~ the state school rejects/waitlists the student, not due to the interview or the student's app, but due to an assumption. Kind of a generalized and a basic example, but that's what this new rule is trying to avoid.

It sucks that we are the guinea pigs, but I believe in the long run this really helps out the applicant more.

Did everyone get a confirmation email saying that their application was complete? I still have not 🙁. I'm worried that i'm secretly not complete. I talked to a guy on the phone and he said that the school doesn't send confirmation emails...

Fake it till you make it bro, every school is your number 1 choice until they reject you... gotta be a savage out here now.

Ive only heard of this happening in the more extreme cases. I mean if Temple interviews someone and later finds out they got into both Pitt and Michigan, is it really a good bet to offer an acceptance to them? See it from the school's perspective

I believe they should if they want them to be part of the class. There will always be hundreds of applicants lined up to fill vacancies on the waitlist every single year. If the person refuses, there will be someone to fill their place. "Yield protection" is something that makes absolutely no sense to me tbh.

Wasnt it 59 yesterday? Maybe they made a typo and added another 9 to the end. Yesterday she said 350. I doubt they sent out 249 II today!
Bro, they're simply done with giving out II's. Denial isn't gonna help.

Haha I know. But in this case, it won’t matter even if it was your number one under the old rules cause schools automatically assumed they weren’t your top choice for you

Yes. If a schools spends their time and an interviewees time and money to go through this, then they should by all means accept that person and offer them that choice instead of assuming/making that decision for them.

Then they run the risk of overfilling the class lol

I have no opinion on the matter lol. I'm just stating it from the school's POV

Did they really send out 249 interviews in one day? I don't get where these numbers are coming from
