2018-2019 Wayne State University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those already admitted, do you have the background check marked as received yet on the portal?

I got the email for the background check consent 3 weeks ago and forgot about it. I just filled out everything this morning. Am I kinda screwed because I waited so long?

When you're one unit away from finishing your first year of medical school but it's the CNS unit.

Expect an in-depth review of the new curriculum once I'm done. Good luck to everyone still waiting! 😎

OUABC or whatever seems to love taking California residents, so that may be a better option! They barely take Michigan applicants..

Tfw they reject and part of the reason why is because you’re a CA applicant. Feelsbadman

I am sure you are an exceptional applicant, so don't feel bad. I have heard from many people thats what they say that to Cali residents when they reject them and for MI people, they blame it on a lack of community service. This is a trend based on many individuals that I have personally met.

Random question (and first post): Wayne State's admission's tracker says that 620 interviews have been completed out of 1062 interview requests. Have the numbers not been updated or is this a true reflection of the current state of interviews? it just seems odd that there are 400 interviews left to be completed when we're already in February.

It hasn't been updated

Has anyone recently gotten an interview invite that was on SC? Thanks

From past posts on this forum, it seems like there is def. hope to go from SC to interview invite as some have indeed gotten interviews after being stuck on SC for awhile!

I, however, have been stuck on SC since 10/26 so I am thinking that since I have been on SC for that long, then it might be a hold/pre-rejection.. but I am still trying to keep my hopes up for that tiny possibility of that last interview date in March..

to everyone who's interviewing this Monday (2/11) and still hasn't found housing yet:

my airbnb has an extra bedroom and bed if y'all need somewhere to stay. it's right next to the campus.
i'm not gonna charge you because i know how expensive the interview trail can get. but if you insist on chipping in, that's cool with me too 🙂

i'll be there saturday and sunday nights, dm on here if you're interested! good luck! 🙂 🙂

Thank you for your hopeful response 🙂 hopefully we hear back with whatever the response is. Just so tired of waiting

Anyone else still in MR? I was complete in early July lol.
The same boat lol.
BTW, do any of you guys have a student ID in your portal?
I don't mean an access ID but a true student ID . I am so confused, is it only me to have that on my app portal?

I do. On the top right beside WSU AccessID.

Nah dude, about 80% of the applicants at my OUWB interview were Michigan residents and even then only a couple of the OOS people were from California. Trust me when I say that no one gets shafted more than Cali applicants. We are a state of 40 million people yet our very limited amount of in-state institutions (the city of Philly historically has had more med schools than our entire state before Northstate and Cal Med came into the picture) only accept a meager 50 to 100 students. As you can imagine, the competition for those spots are quite fierce requiring crazy high stats (like absurdly high). UCLA recently implemented a MINIMUM cutoff of a 512 MCAT. On top of all that, our public institutions are still taking healthy amounts of super competitive applicants from OOS to fulfill their numbers rather than IS applicants. This is especially true for the higher tiered schools which have absolutely no IS bias such as UCSF and Stanford and USC. UCI, UCR and UCSD are generally good about accepting IS applicants but to reiterate their class sizes are miniscule in comparison to the behemoth of Wayne State. Even if Wayne State took half of their class from Cali, they would still have more Cali matriculants then an entire Cali med school!

TLDR: you're not getting passed over for Cali applicants because they are better than you or your application sucks. It's combination of numbers and the abysmal state of our public institutions.

Not from Cali (thankfully), but people really underestimate how much it sucks being from there.

I agree. Cali residents gotta go somewhere, which because of how many there are, is pretty much the everywhere.

Plus we can’t really complain, excluding like Texas I think Michigan is one of the best states for med school app purposes (and in general),

I agree + I feel the same way (though definitely to a much lesser degree) being from FL

Feels weird man getting a boost to my chances by virtue of the state I'm from. I wish the process were more equal in that regard.
