2019-2020 Arizona - Tucson

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am an M4 at UACOM-Tucson who just submitted my residency application. AMA about UA or medical school.

Order66.exe,

Best of luck on your residency endeavors.

If you could speak about your medical education, pros/cons from your experience. Where would you recommend living for OOS matriculants. Anything else you'd feel useful to add as well.

- Thank you.

Has been like this for a while. I'm starting to get paranoid my secondary is complete but not my application.

I am feeling stressed about my interview performance and the wait is going to kill me.

How friendly is Arizona Tucson to OOS applicants? Does it favor nearby states (eg., California) compared to other states?

Last year, they accepted 77% in-state. the year prior it was 67%. They are required, by law, to accept at least 50% from in-state applicants. Given their mission, they really want to know that their students want to remain and serve in Arizona. Since they received 9144 OOS applications last year and only 79 were accepted (they didn't all matriculate), seems like odds are pretty low for OOS. I'm actually surprised that so many OOS students apply here when it's a really hard state school to get into as an OOS applicant, unless there's something really special about you/your application.

I don't know about a preference for geographically closer vs further states.

I received an II waitlist last month and am still extremely bummed 🙁 I'm IS and have been lucky to get some other IIs, including one to UA Phoenix, and my stats are very competitive here. I honestly check my email every day hoping I get moved off the WL. Does anyone who is a current student have any insight into what they look for? Is there anything I can do to reiterate my interest? I really tried to pour my heart out in my secondary about wanting to stay in AZ 🙁

Hey there! I’m a current first year at UA COM-Tucson. If I remember correctly, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think admissions accepts any updates or any letters of intent/interest. To give you some comfort, I was waitlisted for an interview before I got mine and to top it off, I was waitlisted before gaining my acceptance.

Overall, as I am finishing up, I am really satisfied with my education. In terms of board preparation, I felt that UA probably does an average job overall in terms of Step 1 Preparation though this did not stop me nor others in my class from scoring very well. In terms of clinical education, I've felt it has been excellent. Have seen a great mix of bread and butter cases while still seeing very unique and/or rare pathology. Felt like there was a lot of opportunity to get involved as a student and to take responsibility for patient care. Also, nice in house support as UA has home residency programs in just about every specialty. Research is fairly plentiful and is easy to jump onto projects. Administration is actually very responsive to student concerns in my experience.

In terms of where to live, really you cant go wrong with anywhere near the university. Blenman-Elm or Jefferson park neighborhoods are really close to the school and relatively affordable. Sam Hughs is more expensive but really nice and still very close. Some people with families live out in Catalina Foothills, Vail and Oro Valley where the schools are really good with the downside of a longish commute. Tucson commutes in general though are nothing compared to bigger city gridlock.

My class had a bout 30% OOS. I have a lot of classmates from California though I think this reflects a selection bias as Californians are more likely to matriculate rather than a true geographic preference.

I want to add one caveat to this. I think order66.exe went through the 2 year pre-clinical curriculum, right? Having gone through the adjusted curriculum, my sincere belief is that it can put students at a disadvantage for step 1 because you are taking it significantly earlier than some other schools. Many schools with a shortened curriculum let students take step 1 during their 3rd year, which is the correct move if you are going to have a shortened pre-clinical curriculum. The class average has been fine, but this has more to do with students beginning preparation way earlier than in prior years. What you will see in medicine is that you are constantly re-exposed to the same concepts. Taking step 1 earlier limits the amount of exposure you have, which means that when you take step 1, many concepts are not solidified in your mind.

Other than that complaint, UA-Tucson gives excellent training, especially clinically.

Yes, that is true. I went through the full two year pre-clinical and not the 18 month curriculum.

Just got an interview waitlist! is there usually any movement off this waitlist? has there been any rejections so far? Is it common for eveyone to go on the waitlist?

lol i was proud of the interview waitlist i received right now, then scrolled through the posts over here, and now i'm sad haha

Interview waitlist here as well. Any hope??? Really like the school.

There's always hope, but... it seems from this and last year that a lot more people go on the interview waitlist than get off. However, it's not an outright rejection so congrats on making it through the first hoop! 👍

Anyone else get an email from UA-Tucson diversity inclusion post interview saying thank you for interviewing and hope to see you next year?

Just to clarify, does that mean that if we were complete before August 25th, but have NOT received an email from you with an interview invite, we're not technically out of the running just yet? @AdmissionsOffice

No, your application will still be reviewed. An interview waitlist does not mean that you are rejected. It is possible to come off the interview waitlist and receive an interview invite. If you have specific questions about your applications, please contact the Admissions office. Thank you!

Anyone else complete before this date but not hear anything yet? Complete 8/13 but have not heard anything, not even waitlist. Just hoping someone is in the same boat as me!
