2019-2020 CA University of Science and Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations to everyone that got accepted today! Wish I could join the party but unfortunately got waitlisted. Interviewed 10/11, IS, LM ~ 70.

My neurotic self combed through the 2018-2019 CUSM thread and found that 11/16 of those who reported being waitlisted ultimately received an acceptance(unclear how the remaining 5 actually faired due to no report). So keep your chin up!

Edit: Does anyone remember if during the interview if they intended to keep their class size smaller (and correspondingly number of acceptances smaller) until they have confirmation that the new facilities will be complete on time?

Yes! They'll cap the incoming class at 85 until the new building is ready where they could accept 130

Yeah our current class is 98 but they’re bumping it up to 130 starting next class with the completion of the new building in April/May

I’ve had this same problem despite signing out of my other portals prior to attempting to login to calmeds. I recommended contacting their IT email that they provided. They were able to resolve my issue
I can't seem to find an email for IT. Can you share the one you have? Would really appreciate it!!

I was talking to my sister earlier, who did a rotation at Arrowhead when she was in medical school . According to her, there are a lot of Caribbean medical students that rotate at Arrowhead. Can somebody confirm?

SoI checked my emails and admissions was able to fix my issue, not IT. Did you try emailing them?

Currently I know of SGU (Caribbean) and Western (DO) students rotating at Arrowhead (there may be more, not sure). Caribbean schools typically pay US based hospitals to take their students for rotations.

I've been assured by many (including residents/attendings at ARMC) that CUSM students will take priority when rotations begin in 2020 in regards to educational "experiences" though, if that's a concern for you.

How's research at CUSM? Are there a lot of faculty that are engaged in research or are there external institutions that people tend to work at? Is the research primarily clinical?

I'm with you man. IS, interviewed 10/25 and waitlisted today 🙁 Trying to stay positive with limited success lol

Can't access my portal so I e-mailed admissions for help. This was their response:
"
Thank you for contacting CUSM-SOM. Once the application is submitted you are not allowed to view or change details.

We have received your secondary and the admissions committee is reviewing all applicants at the moment."

During lunch with the students and faculty I asked this question and one of the faculty members told me that if research was very important to me, that I should look at another medical school...lol The student followed that up by saying that they do have many opportunities for basic science research but that most of his classmates that want to do clinical research have been successful at doing so by reaching out to other institutions.

That's a bit annoying. They should remove the "Science" from the school name. Haha

There are several (at least 6) students in a basic science research program the school offers to select students. In this program you earn a stipend and work on projects with faculty and are expected to 1st author a paper eventually (among other things, at least) during the couple of years you participate. They plan to expand this every year as the school grows and eventually make similar programs in clinical research and other areas (global health, education, etc.)

Besides this program they also offer summer research programs and many students also participate in clinical research with ARMC faculty.

And yes, several students also do research at nearby institutions as well (Loma Linda, Kaiser, etc.)

Obviously it's not as robust as a place like UCLA right now but the school's goal is to expand more and more into research, both in the basic sciences and clinically.

Interesting. I can't access either. What's odd is another applicant said they got an II on their portal.....Thanks for emailing them directly....

Try copying and pasting the link into your browser instead of clicking on it, this usually works for all of the AMCAS gateway portals

Thank you!!! It worked!! However it only shows the secondary application that I submitted, no status as typical portals do. Or do they update here once they review etc???

You’re welcome! As far as I know they don’t update unless you receive an interview invite (at which point you’ll see the option to schedule an interview appear on the portal)

Thank you. It really isn't much of a portal...Do they also send emails?

They usually do unless technical glitches occur that prevent the email from being sent, but yeah these “portals” are definitely bare minimum lol

I used the incognito mode of chrome and it did work. But the portal I see is nothing more than my submitted secondary. Is that what you see?
That should be right, I'm a little different because I have an interview scheduled--but if my memory is correct, that's all I saw before I got invited for an interview

it wouldnt even let me log into the portal before my interview invite. i joked with a friend that my app was so trash they just deleted it off their system.

So I have an II here on 11/22 but it seems ppl have been accepted already. Should I be concerned about this? Is there even still a chance of me getting in? Thanks.

Use those CARS skills. If all the spots were filled up, then why would they still have interviews in January. Not everyone accepted is going to matriculate here.

Anyone know if they interview on 12/27 or 1/3 (i know it's holiday weeks) and if so are they receptive to ITA?

It was probably the most relaxed out of all the one-on-one interviews I've had. There wasn't even a desk between us, we were just sitting in a mock physician examination room. Two days prior, I was accepted to a school I would definitely choose over CalMed barring any huge scholarships so I really wasn't that into the interview, but maybe it helped ease any nerves I might have had and thus translated into into a relaxed conversation. Overall, however, it was like most interviews; relaxed, low stress, and friendly interaction with the interviewer!

that’s Great to hear! Was it mostly just them trying to get to know more about you? No trick/ethical questions?

Yes! but that is also how all my interviews have seemed. There are some pre-made questions they are required to ask you such as "tell me a time where..." and stuff like that, but overall it was talking about things I put on my application and things I brought up.
