2019-2020 Loyola

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on the acceptance!! Did you send in any updates after your interview?
Thanks! So yes Before this I was placed on continued consideration in the middle of October, And on my portal it explained that I was in the continued consideration pile.

Around a week after I was placed in continued consideration I sent them 1 long update.

I got a phone call yesterday along with an email and a portal change telling me I was accepted.

I just checked the interview feedback for Loyola and the interviews are really long (Most said 50+ minutes)! For those that interviewed did it feel like it flew by?

It really depends on how you feel you are doing. In my experience, my loyola flew by because I felt like I was doing really well. I can imagine if you start to stumble they tend to feel longer. But both of my interviewers were not trying to trick me but just hear my story. So they both flew by.

Does anyone /any current Loyola student have any updates on if they are changing the curriculum? Because I was looking online for next year’s schedule (2020-2021) and the entire schedule for M2s is already up but there’s nothing there for the M1s except for breaks.

It was outright asked in my interview to some current students and even the director (?) of the ACE program them. It seems there will eventually be change, but not in time for the incoming class.

I have heard so many great things about this school but not so much on the downsides about it, would anyone be willing to share a bit of their knowledge about why NOT loyola? I want to consider all aspects of this school

As an M1 you have to park in a gravel lot and there are MANY flat tires.

Jokes aside, Well they don’t release their match list which is kinda weird just a summary. It’s not actually in Chicago you are a good 40 mins with light traffic from the city and you can’t even see downtown from campus. It’s really expensive and they have a high average indebtedness compared to other medical schools. They’re changing their curriculum (hopefully for not this cycle but who ever really knows). The cadavers are pro-secret.

For those who have been accepted, when filling out the certification of prerequisites, did you substitute an organic chemistry course for one of the chemistry courses since you have to have 8 hours of chemistry? My gen chem courses only count for 6 and the only other chemistry course I took was organic chem so I'm just wondering if other people are in a similar situation

Idk if I’d say the prosected cadavers are a con lol, I’ve often seen it said as a plus

Yea I would think prosected is a pro. In terms of curriculum, I’m not the biggest fan of the fact that they’re not currently system-based, and that they’re still 2+2 year curriculum. But again, these are just my personal preferences.

I would say that while research opportunities are available, they are relatively limited compared to other academic medical centers. I think you just need to consider fit when weighing the pros and cons - do you care more about community health and service or do your passions lie with academic research? Loyola seems to lean more towards the community service/health side of things. Also, I would definitely consider prosection a negative. I think there is a lot of value in actually dissecting a cadaver yourself and I tend to be much more of a hands on learner.

Anyone know the email address we send thank you letters to? I lost the card lol but I think it’s just their standard admissions email
Address?

They said to do it standard admissions email. Did you send it through that and were they able to give it to your interviewers?

I sent it through. No response from them. Might f/u later lol.
I wouldn't follow up on a thank you letter.... they get 15000 applications and have an office of like 4 people thats really not worth it and will just annoy them.

Also FYI y'all the executive admissions committee wont meet again until January 13th.

So I know this school likes it when applicants show interest. I am still under review, so I was wondering if / how I would demonstrate continued interest in hopes of receiving an interview invite?

For those of you who have submitted an update, did you get any kind of notification or anything? When I did there was no record of it on the portal and it looks exactly the same

Mine showed up a couple days later.. but no I don’t think it matters lol
Mine took 4 weeks. It doesn't matter in the sense of you having any more or less chance, what it means is that one of your interviewers didn't submit their feedback properly. And what it meant for me is that instead of being in that 4-6 week window having interviewed in late October, now I have to wait until January to hear. But I was assured it would have no impact on my final decision. Hope that answers your q.

Also, surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but the more you check your portals, the more likely you are to be invited to an II or get accepted. Not like evert minute, but that’s how they gauge interest in some cases.

It’s so bs that they do this lol

SHHHHH don't spill the secret 😉

It shouldn’t be a secret. I thought that was so absurd when they told me that. Like most people don’t check their portals Bc if we hear news, we get an email. This is just propagating neurotic behavior that is just unhealthy lol.

This I agree with, I was just joking around because I really want to get in lol. Honestly I was embarassed when I heard that because I have looked at the portal like 10,000 times.

I wonder if other schools do this and don't admit it.

I hope not. Honestly, Loyola fell on my list when I heard this. Also, I felt the administration wasn’t being transparent about (Loyola Community Mourns the Death of Second-year Medical Student)

If my silent schools are silent bc I haven’t neurotically checked their portal, I’m glad I didn’t bc it’s not a school I want to attend
From what I have heard they have been very transparent about it with the students... if that makes you feel any better.

We met different students I guess.
I'm not upset about it, so there's no "making me feel any better" ... just putting it out there in case any students weren't aware.

other than that, great school. lots of my close friends attend here, and they love it.

if only they based it on how often you checked their SDN thread...

I haven't gotten an interview and was wondering if I should send an update letter.
I'm not sure on what to write on there though, haven't done any volunteering, but I did get A's in all my classes so is that ok?
What else do people write?
