2019-2020 Miami (Miller)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Same, I feel like at this point its probably a soft reject for some of us

But I thought Miami does like a straight scoring thing. So if it was a soft reject, wouldn't it say that it's been processed or that review has finished or something, but you just didn't get an email from them on your status yet?

If you look at past years threads you will see that it may just sit in that status until the end if they are not planning to offer an interview.

For those that are still in review mode: does your status say "under review" or "being reviewed"? Pretty sure mine switched from under to being, but not certain.

I still havent gotten the secondary and it's been over 2 months since I got the thank you for your application email. Should I be concerned?

Just got it today. I think they do a holistic review or something.

Anyone got any tips for the “why this school question?” Their website is pretty hard to navigate imo.

I also have not gotten a secondary and I submitted a month ago! Does scoring come after the secondary? I’m having trouble understanding why because I am above their medians. Anyone else not receive a secondary?

Has anyone who has emailed them in the last few weeks heard back?

Can anyone tell me how the interview days are for the MD and MD/MPH. Are the interviews all in one day or are they each day for each program? Couldn't really find information about the exact details of what to expect, thanks!
MD/MPH is split over two days. First day is at the Miami campus for MD interview. Second day is at the Palm Beach regional campus for the MD/MPH interview.

Hi! For anyone who applied MD/MPH I have a question about the secondary question:

Please describe any experience you have had in public health – this could be in the field, in training, in education or other related experience.

Do they want me to list all my public health exposure? I am a non-traditional applicant who has a lot of prior work/volunteer experience in global health. Should I touch on one of these experiences or create a summary and also highlight one in particular? Thanks for the help!

I wrote about three major public health experiences that were impactful on my decision to seek and MD/MPH, an experience abroad, an experience in public policy, and a research experience. I wouldn't directly list out those experience, but rather elaborate on the most important ones; what you did, what you took away from the experience, etc.

Thanks! Do you recall how long it took for them to respond? I sent an update last week and never received any response, even that they received it. Wondering how long I wait before calling.
They responded the next day

Fourth year here (md/mph) - Haha, I feel like I've been rendered obsolete with so many excited changes taking place at our institution but I'm happy to answer any questions folks may have though I may have to defer to the underclassmen lol.

Thank you for doing this! I will start. What kind of student are they really looking for?

What's your favorite part about the U and/or what made you choose it over other schools?

That's kind of a hard question to answer. I'd say they want a well-rounded person. UM is known for not only excellent research and scholarship but also community engagement. We're not heavier towards one side or the other so being able to speak to the different facets of how we improve health will serve you well going into your interview. And your application will be a reflection of that. This isn't to say that you absolutely must have research but if you don't, the rest of your app should be stacked with legitimate experiences that show your own unique interest in people and health.

Refer to the first page of this thread.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to do this. On MSAR, it says “Currently, the clerkship phase has numeric scores. This numeric score and either Pass or Fail appears on transcripts” and that for student rankings, “class quartile is calculated for each campus based on the clerkship phase.”

Could you speak to how this works please, and/or how it plays a role in your experience there? Thank you!

As I've went through school, it's been essentially numerically-based the whole way. There was a pass/fail component but it didn't matter bc ranking etc were still based on the numerical score and the number still showed up on the transcript.

They're completely revamping the curriculum as we speak so MSAR cannot be relied upon. From what I understand, everything will be pass fail. As of now, the preclinical curriculum has switched over and they're no longer doing numerical grades but I don't think clinicals have been switched over yet.

The school you may be going to will curricularly look different than what I've done lol

Thank you! I’m looking forward to learning more about their curriculum.

In terms of the MD/MPH - I’ve read in various SDN/reddit threads that combined 4 year programs can feel rushed at times. Would you agree with that? Did MPH coursework get in the way of pursuing other opportunities/electives/etc?

I don't think anyone from my class necessarily felt that it was rushed. I know one classmate who maybe felt the rigor wasn't what it should be but no overall complaints on the program itself from anyone. I don't feel that it got in the way of any additional goals I had for myself. For other students, it became a slight hindrance when prepping to apply for competitive specialties in terms of having access to the experts on the main campus.

But again, they're changing the layout of the md/mph as well. From what I hear, it will be roughly 1 year of preclinical. 1 year of mph and 2 year of clinicals. Plus it will all be on the main campus. But again, that's heresay at this point and definitely something worth asking on the interview trail.

No school is obligated to hold off on any app if it is deemed "complete". I think its best you hold off on sending to UM until your new score comes in so they get a full picture of your application without making assumptions on an old score.

I have a source close to admissions who told me that my application would be rejected if my MCAT score is below 504. But, since you are retaking they would probably hold off to see how you do. Good luck!

I got a secondary invite a little from this school over a month ago and my other secondaries took longer than I expected. Is there still a chance for me submitting this late? Lizzy M 68, first gen, economically disadvantaged. I would really appreciate any input!

I don't think it could hurt!

Anybody else find an interview invite in the portal with no email received? Complete 8/14 for MD-MPH. Sorry if I’m sending a bunch of people on a portal checking spree but I can’t tell if this is legit or not. I’m gonna try calling them...

Edit: my app was for MD & MD-MPH

it seems they forgot to send mine...

congrats!

Hi 🙂 Just a heads up if you get an II: Be sure to double check the portal after you get your interview confirmation email! There must have been a glitch or something and the interview date on my portal didn’t match the interview date I requested/confirmed. Fixed with a quick call to admissions office! They were very helpful !

i've been complete for almost 2.5 months and my status finally changed from "under review" to "has been reviewed". probably not a good sign it took them that long....

That’s a good sign I think - I was complete since early July and was “being reviewed” for 2 months until my app was scored. Waited 2 weeks for the II.

potential applicant here! I submitted my primary to Miller and am wondering if its wroth it to submit a secondary. my MCAT is 509 and GPA is 4.0. Currently working as a lab tech. any input helps!

On my schedule, it says that I have 2 interviews back to back but isn't it the case that the MD and the MD/MPH interviews are on different days? Also, does anyone know if the MD/MPH interview is also an hour?

Edit: I just checked my portal and it said that on one day I have both MD and Behavioral Program interview? What is the Behavioral Program....?

Hey Just interviewed here for both MD and MD/MPH. You will have two interviews. There are people that either had both on one day or one on each day.

Omg, thank you! Is there a way of knowing beforehand which case you are?

Anybody have any idea what the ‘behavioral’ and ‘experiential’ programs are? The II listed in my portal changed to these (MD/MPH)
