Does anyone know if the class is full and the feb 21 group is just interviewing for alternate list?

At orientation they say they keep seats open throughout the interview process. Just focus on the interview, have a good time, and hope for the best!

Are you IS or OOS?

They told us that there are spots held throughout the end of the cycle and that when you interview/when you get reviewed by the committee isn’t a factor in terms of your chances of getting admitted. I believe they even say that on their website as well. So short answer is no, you still got a shot for an actual spot no matter when you interview.

Does anyone know where to find the academic calendar for CHM, including breaks, holidays, and other significant dates? I can only find the academic calendar for the undergrad.

Thank you! I am In-State and this is my absolute first choice so I'm hoping I can at least get a shot on the alternate list and send a letter of intent from there 🙂

Any current students able to discuss their choice in campus location? Any significant difference in opportunity at either?

I am drawn to GR for the more urban vibe (and better food), but it's an hour further from family and my fiance (I'm fairly nontrad). It seems like EL would be the better choice logistically, but I want to be sure I'm choosing wisely!

@DemNeurons - just in case you're not exhausted from your awesome and insightful post!

You seem to have an accurate gestalt on the difference between the sites. Sometime in late April-ish, once they have a prospective class roster (near the day when you can't hold more than one acceptance), they send out a link to a campus preference survey.

Out of 200 people (and it varies year-to-year), I'd guess 120'ish choose GR. So, about ~20 people don't get their choice.

I'm in GR and the top reason I personally like it is: Spectrum hospitals and Helen deVos children's hospital... I have no idea what the comparison is like (Sparrow??), but I like the medical centers here... I'm a non-trad and very frugal so I could care less about restaurants, but a lot of my classmates feel otherwise... We're here because of proximity to family and my spouse's job prospects were better here.

Personally I think I'd have been happier in EL, having access to student amenities like gym, student health, lots of libraries and on-campus events for my family to attend... and cheaper rent. cheaper/easier parking...

One of the most noticeable differences the first two years, I think, is that EL is in an older campus building and GR has a single 7-story modern building with giant windows.

One thing I was curious about was the quality of faculty at one or the other---but that has not been an issue. There are a couple faculty that I envy them having over there and vice versa, but we do Zoom between campuses and the faculty drive back and forth, too... The faculty are great in both places.

Keep in mind that you can go to Marquette, Traverse City, Midland, Southfield, Flint, EL, or GR for your 3rd and 4th years!

Go to Justintimemedicine.com and do a search for "calendar", then go to the "media" tab. The calendar for the entering class of 2020 is not on there...

I.e. Just In Time Medicine

This is accurate--if you're interviewing, you have just as much of a chance as anyone else. Folks in my class interviewed at every single interview date!!

I just received my decision. Waitlisted!
Good luck everyone!

Interviewed 1/13 and alternate listed this morning.

My question is . . Do we really have hope?
I was gonna start studying to retake MCAT.
It is my second school to put me on Waitlist .
I’m not sure, friend. It’s not an outright rejection so that’s a good thing, but it really depends on how many people end up not accepting their acceptance at MSU, and it being such an amazing school, I can’t imagine many people would turn down their acceptance there. I guess it all depends. But I think I might have to unfortunately start studying for the mcat again also since this was my only interview this season, and I don’t think there are many left to be received. Hoping for the best for you and everyone else in any case.

If you are Waitlisted too, does the email says
" If you want to retake mcat before our final decision . . . . change it from your AAMC application to your future MCAT" kinda thing or it is just for me suggesting me to retake mcat.

Does anyone know?

Maybe it’s generic language? I don’t know for sure though but mine did say the same.

Here I copy/paste it
"If you decide to take a future MCAT before our final decision and you would like those scores considered, please update your AMCAS application with your new exam date and notify us by email." Doesn't it have this?

I am thinking if it is a suggestion to retake mcat.

yes I do have that also

Got my decision this morning and was actually referred to the ABLE program! Does anyone know anyone who went through this program before they went to the medical school?

I have a couple friends in ABLE rn who love it. And on previous threads they y’all more about it in detail.

Is anyone else still on hold and not heard anything yet? I was complete in late July and from my understanding their last interview in 02/21. Is there any precedent for still receiving an II at this point or should we expect rejection?

I am also still on hold. I have heard of people who have been on hold who were rejected pretty recently, so the ONLY thing I can think of is if they keep a pool of potential interviewees in the event that someone cancels their interview. And if no one cancels, the answer will likely be a rejection. I might be wrong but it seems like that would make sense

Just to add to what Hazel said, both campuses are very different. I think you can rate EL and GR on three things: the city, the campus, and the housing.

Having been in EL for year 1 and 2, a lot of the ammentities they describe are cool and all, but i can't say I used them too much. MSU prides itself on being a cheaper undergrad compared to UofM, but what they don't tell you is the nickel and diming they do with EVERYTHING. Want to ride the bus? Buy our bus pass, Want to go to the gym? Buy our gym membership.... It's kind of ridiculous. Theres plenty of gyms around though that are cheaper (sometimes nicer). EL itself its kind of cool for maybe the first couple weeks, but then you're really just stuck at Rad and feel very disconnected from the rest of the school. You're just too busy and either at home or at school studying. The party scene is obviously there, along with game day etc. but personally I've had my fill college bars, plus AA Ricks and Skeeps are better 😉 YMMV though, especially if you still like to do that. EL is very much a college bar town attatched to the capitol that has a few cool places, but obviously no where near GR. I will say that housing is really cheap, especially once you realize that you don't have to live right on campus. Really nice appartments up near Eastwood town center for cheap, and you can just shoot down the highway to get to class in < 10 minutes. Check out the Beaumont or others around there if you want to spend $1200/month total on rent on a 2br and NOT live in a shoe box like at barry tree (Shivers). liked EL because it felt like everyone was a bit more homey and close than GR for my year. The campus, compared to what Hazel said, is brand new as far as the student spaces go. The basement of Rad was rennovated withint he last 10 years, and the testing space is new too. The clinic center is old yeah, but you're really not there all that much other than sim. So i guess you've got a neutral city (depnding on what you like), great housing, and a neutral to positive campus if you count the campus at large and not just Rad.

That said GR is bigger and bustling. Its a great beer city. Definitely everything that comes with that sort of town. Its far and away more expensive though, and parking is a bitch and a half. Good luck finding a nice apartment for not $$$$ but no worries for you Californians, you're probably used to it 😉. You have a really nice school building in Secchia, and a great city in GR, but I feel like you loose out on own housing. I will add a caveat on housing as this is only what I've heard.

Take that academic calendar with the biggest spoon of salt - it changes all the time.

Got my decision this morning and was actually referred to the ABLE program! Does anyone know anyone who went through this program before they went to the medical school?

I know several in my class, and close with a few. Most of them say that it was a lot of work, but they learned a lot and obviously its worth it. I hear its basically a post-bac but you get in when you finish.

Does anyone know if there’s an official Facebook group for accepted students?

Should be, email admissions if you can't find it.

Isn't the new curriculum centered around preparing students for Step 1? With the change to Step 1 being P/F, are there still benefits to it/will there be changes?

I knew that one was coming.....

but what a fantastic question, and I have absolutely no idea. We have all been just as speculative as everyone else. Even the attending I was working with called it a "game changer" and I think that's the best way to put it. You guys are in a whole different ball game now. I will say that the new curriculum isn't just centered around step 1, its mainly about getting you acclimated and into the clinic early on so that you're functional as 3rd years (something I'd say it does super well). I think faculty knew this was coming eventually, so I'm sure we'll get a response soon enough from them. If anything, step 2 is clinical focussed - questions end with "and the best next step in management is....?" Since you're in clinicals 2nd year, you get extra time and exposure to treatment management. I wish I had a better answer, but again, this is all just speculation and thats not going to help. Personally, I'd rather they have kept Step 1 scored - the focus is going to shift to step 2 now. Step 1 level stress added into 3rd year clerk ships? F*** that. Not to mention you'll take what is to become THE life determining test of medical school 2-3 months before you apply to residency - this is going to be bad. Not just here, but the medical school Meta in general.

I appreciate the response! This whole change has current M0's (atleast from what I've seen here and from friends I've talked to) kind of freaking out because nobody knows how this change is going to affect us. People telling us to choose schools based off prestige, how low tier MDs are screwed, and a whole lot of other speculation. Just trying to get the most information I can so I can make the most informed decision. Do you think it'd be appropriate to ask schools at second look days (including MSUCHM) about this change and if they are going to adjust at all?

Let us know if faculty ends up saying anything about the topic!

Thanks again

I think school reputation is becoming more important than ever before.

I think everyone is overly freaking out about step 1 change...the message didn’t even say it was going to happen during the time this entering class takes step 1. It’s highly likely that they may push the date back in order to have more time for the change. Also even if it is pass/fail us students still have to pass the exam so it’s still a useful curriculum that chm has

I absolutely think it's appropriate for you to ask - this is literally your future education, and its an important and stressing topic simply because the future is so unknown at this point. I do agree with MD2B and others though, we don't completely know whats going to happen and this may take time. That said, it WILL happen, so the conversation should not simply be dismissed. And to retierate what else I said, I think the curriculum will still prepare you well to be a 3rd year and prep for Step 2 simply because part of your clerkship's happen during 2nd year.

It’s based on whatever characteristics the incoming class needs or is missing
Do you think that criteria changes every year? I mean, i thought it is just GPA+ MCAT+ Extracurricular activities + personal statement + mission of the school . . . Kinda Algorithm.

I'm hoping someone can help me with this question:

When I called michigan state yesterday, they said I had until april 15th to select the "plan to enroll" option. But my second look day at another school i'm equally interested isn't until april 20th. This makes me a bit nervous. Any advice or confirmation of this?

Each school has their own preference of when they would like students to commit. If you called MSU and explained your situation, I’m sure they would be willing to give you a few day extension to make the decision. Hope that helps!

Alternate list. Interesting, I thought my interview went very well. Guess not?

I int’d 1/27. OOS

Also, hang in there!

According to the website: “Files are not reviewed in any particular order. Many factors contribute to the timing of review of a given applicant, so someone who interviewed in November may get a decision before someone who interviewed in October....”
