Mood.

Never thought I’d be one of those people compulsively checking their portal but here I am checking it 3+ times a day including weekends for no good reason.
I was in the exact same boat, normally a very non-neurotic/impulsive personality type but this had me on another level. I started telling myself I can only check SDN and the portal on Fridays and Mondays since I got put on Hold and that’s actually helped a lot! (Obviously this is a Saturday but I’m bored and feeling much more stable ) Hang in there!!

I’m sorry. 🙁 I think you and I are in the same boat. When were you complete?
I'm sorry! Where does it say this on the portal -- struggling to decipher their old-school portal.
Oops! Sorry I'm late, friends. I submitted 8/14 and was marked complete 11/25, received the news 1/7. It appeared in bold as "Final Decision" right under application status in the middle of the page!

Anyone else who interviewed in October still waiting to hear an update? They said 3-8 weeks on my interview day and now I just want to see if anyone else is in the same boat. I'm starting to drive myself a little crazy with scenarios in my head.

are you checking your portal - because reminder that they only send emails for acceptance, the rest is a simple portal update. However, at my interview in early Jan, they said they are running slow this year as there are only 4 of them in the office and thus they most likely ewill be longer than 8 weeks. Obviously your 8 weeks has passed so if you still haven't heard about a hold on the portal, I would call them. They are all so nice.

I much appreciate the quick response. My portal doesn't have an update yet but I was able to talk with someone on the phone who confirmed essentially what you said. That's reassuring to hear that they were expecting delays as of early January. Best of luck to everyone still waiting!

So they didn’t give you an answer, just said that they are behind?

I am unsure if anyone looked into my specific case, but I received essentially the same response by email and phone call. I stated how many weeks it had been since my interview (11 at that time) and they said it's a complex process that depends on many factors and updates will be published to the portal after the MMI and personal interview are scored. I'm personally trying to strike a balance between patience and doing my due diligence to make there isn't some logistical issue.

from what I understand of the admissions process at OHSU, after your MMI and interview are scored the committee will meet to discuss each applicant and determine a score (per their algorithm). There is a score at which OHSU knows they are going to admit you and process those notifications first so they don’t lose those folks to other schools (in my interview they explicitly mentioned NW and Stanford). There are other applicants who score below a certain point that they know will not be admitted even off of a waitlist based on historical trends. For everyone else in between, we’re in a hold until notified otherwise. Kinda a no news is good news scenario. Later in the cycle, once OHSU has fewer future interviews and therefore fewer potential applicants who could earn a higher score in their algorithm, they will process more acceptances in February March and April. Unlike other programs, OHSU does not over accept initially with the hope that a certain number of applicants will choose to go elsewhere.

This is the most concisely and clearly I have ever seen this explained, thanks!!

FYI for anyone waiting since November - Interviewed 11/12 and put on hold 1/28.

So today I was talking with a doctor who works at OHSU and I mentioned that I had recently interviewed there and was on the post-interview hold list.

He told me that I still have a chance since ~20% of the holds eventually get accepted. I’m inclined to believe him since he works there and is supposedly “in the know”, but that can’t be right, right?

Assuming that what the adcom said is true - 10% A, 10% R, and 80% H - I was under the impression that odds of being accepted off hold was significantly higher than 20%.....

That doesn't seem to be accurate. At the interview they stated that they interview between 550-570 applicants per cycle and offer between 220-250 acceptances. That's a roughly 40% acceptance rate.

IMO, based on conversations I've had with faculty at OHSU and other programs, most faculty members are WILDLY out of the loop when it comes to admissions data since the group involved in the admissions process is so small. Its part of the reason why asking doctors for advice about medical school admissions is such a mixed bag.

Appreciate the insight. My anxiety has been steadily rising being in the hold limbo and his advice definitely didn’t help. It’s probably time to listen to everyone (including myself) and start chilling out about this whole process lol.

I think my favorite people to talk about the medical school process with are non-medical people, because they have no idea how competitive or expensive the medical school process is! Or they can't possibly understand that it's normal to wait 3 months after an interview just for an initial decision, could take even longer for an acceptance. It is a bit comical seeing their reactions.

Re: the anxiety waiting -- Sometimes it is a challenge to be present, but from my personal experience as a reapplicant -- do your best to enjoy every small thing in your life, because you don't want to look back on this year as a year of waiting. When I didn't get in the first time, it felt like I had nothing left, because I prioritized my life so much around getting into medical school -- but that's absolutely not true. There is so much more to life than medicine and knowing that has allowed me to better manage my anxiety this cycle. Try to take it all in. I'm here for you, you're not alone!!!

Haha yeah especially around the holiday season it was amusing and frustrating explaining to my family how the whole process works. Having a space where everyone is more or less in the same boat and can understand the unique challenges of med school apps is why I peruse forums like this.

That’s a great mentality to have. Maintaining a healthy perspective on life has proven far easier said than done! If nothing else, applying to schools has been a lesson in and of itself. And definitely an exercise in patience 🙂

I think they give you a ranked waitlist number later on in the cycle and numbers up to 80 had a pretty decent chance, no? I felt like that was going on last year.

Last year, I believe the wait list got to 50. I believe 50 is a more realistic wait list cut-off number. But others can weigh in. There is a Excel doc someone posted last year that had all the stats. Though, last year was the first year of the new admissions policy, and so, now that is understood, it may adjust this year.

Acceptance received just now by email (2/4) for the MD-program! I interviewed for MD-PhD and was told in the email I am still being considered for the MD/PhD program.

Secondary received: 7/10
Secondary submitted: 7/23
Interviewed: 10/8-10/9

does anyone know about how many acceptances have they given out? I have not interviewed yet (scheduled end of Feb) and trying to gauge my chance.

congratulations! I’m so excited to you 🙂) Wow four months... I just interviewed and am already checking my portal like crazy. Did you submit a LOI?

Thank you! And no, all that was stated in the email was that the director of the MD/PhD program would be in contact with me soon to keep me updated on the status of my application.

I hope your interview went well!! And honestly, I just had to stop checking at some point because the wait was making me miserable. I did not send a LOI.

I got this email this morning.
