2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an email with my NetID, I'm trying to log in to see my financial aid, but the log in they sent me isn't working. Anyone have the same issue?

Has anyone emailed the admissions office recently and received a reply?

So I also just got accepted to MPH but already rejected from the MD program in February. I didn't know they would consider my app for MPH separately...
Hmm strange. When did you interview md/mph?

For those of you who interviewed recently (in March), did u guys do your student interview? I emailed the admissions office after two weeks and got a very generic response “you will be contacted by a student” which I think is a bit disorganized. I understand if the final decision is being delayed due to this virus but why can’t a student contact me? The problem is, without the student interview, they won’t review my app (although that interview may not affect much). I wouldn’t have stressed out much if it was December/January.

I interviewed March 11th and had my Peer-to-Peer interviewer contact me March 18th, and then we had our interview on March 19th.

this worries me even more now, because I actually interviewed before March 11th. Should I contact them again? I don’t want to irritate them but also don’t wanna mess up my chance because of this delay!
plus, I emailed them last week already just to get a generic response.

I would give it a few more days. I would send out an email then since they say that it can be up to 14 days.
Really depends on the student's availability/ schedule.

Seconded. Each student is different and have different schedules, responsibilities, response time, etc.

Definitely don't hesitate to e-mail them on day 14, though.

How long do they typically take to make a decision?

No one knows. They've only had one date where they sent out acceptances I believe. When the next batch will be there's nothing to go off of, especially since COVID-19 is certainly delaying the process.

Also do you guys think the class is filled as of now?

Probably not. It's a big class, and I doubt that the first wave covered it all. Unless AMCAS extends the dates in its protocols, by April 15th Downstate will most likely have accepted enough students to fill their class, or even more. Downstate typically has a lot of waitlist movement, though, so there will be plenty of acceptances after that as well.

Just a reminder to those who may not be from or living in NYC atm. The lockdown (or rather 'PAUSE') is pretty extensive. I've mentioned it before but I feel it bears mention again - more than likely there will be some profound delays this cycle in terms of acceptances as admissions committees most likely wont get to meet as often. Both because of the current restrictions in the city and the fact that Downstate faculty are swamped and busy with higher priority situations at the moment.

I think April 30th is actually the Plan to Enroll deadline, which doesn't kick you off of any waitlists you might want to stay on. The Commit to Enroll deadline is July 13th.

Ah I see, I misread. I thought the July 13th date was for those accepted off the waitlist after April 30th.

Dang, they really give you a lot of time to commit to enroll, explains why there is so much waitlist movement in July. Oof I need to decide if I'm renewing my lease by July 26th, I'm hoping I find out before then and can keep this apartment haha.

Ah, then it looks like this doesn't have much correlation with MD admissions. Another several weeks of waiting to hear back it is.

Congrats on your other MD acceptances though!
I got accepted to the MD/MPH and it was just one email to check the portal, where it showed the md/mph offer along with more details about the mph.

Hm, when did you interview and when did you receive your acceptance if you don't mind my asking?

Anyone know if Downstate still accepts updates after you get placed on the alternate list?

Did they notify you recently about being placed on the waitlist? They seem receptive to updates and letters, I sent updates through email and they responded fairly promptly. Although I expect there may be some delay now given the situation with the pandemic.

They did not. Just trying to plan on whether to send an update now or wait and that's dependent on whether or not they're receptive to updates even after the alternate list is made.

I think they are always receptive to updates. When someone asked the dean who spoke at my interview day, they said they want everything even spring grades updated or internship updates. So no harm in sending them I think you should put your best foot forward and make sure they have everything from you even interest letters about your commitment to being their student.

Is there a 2020 match list for this school anywhere?

Should we just give up having any hope at this point

I am wondering the same thing. What is the admission office's plan - has there really been no acceptances since the first wave in feb? Is everyone who interviewed in 2020 getting wait listed? I interviewed in 1/15 and had my peer to peer phone call 4 weeks later.

That’s exactly what happened last year so odds are we’re all on the waitlist

Last year is also very different from this year, you can look at the thread and see that. There have been far more acceptances by now, and also announcements on rejections, ALs, etc.

Regardless, the alternative list at Downstate gets a TON of movement so even if we were it doesn't mean much. Last cycle plenty of people were put on the AL just to be accepted the following week.

Negativity wont do you much good during this time 😛

They certainly have not filled all their acceptances by now, and Downstate gets a LOT of alternative list movement anyways. We're not even close to the endgame yet. I know a lot of students at Downstate, many of which weren't admitted until May - July.

Keep your head up, negativity and hopelessness wont do you much good during this time 😛

Good luck! <3

There are a LOT of people who interviewed in 2020- when I got my email there were dates open all the way till April 28. It obviously means that many of them will get accepted so no don't give up hope at this point!! They wouldn't be interviewing people if they didn't actually have a shot. They don't want to waste their time either right? They are dealing with a totally online admissions process at this point which means that things will be delayed even further. A lot of the committee members are professors and doctors in the hospital (they are probably doing more with COVID rn than just being on the committee) so just hold on tight for a bit longer they will contact us all eventually. They mentioned repeatedly on my interview day that many people who they accept initially get accepted to other NY schools and so their waitlist gets a lot of movement...like so so much movement that maybe a bit less than half of their class was on the list. This year obviously has unprecedented issues and delays. Hold on tight. GL to us all!!

Also, due to the rapidly changing covid-19 situation in NYC, I think Downstate is super busy right now. It's reasonable that they prioritize everything else and push back the admission decisions. I know this is frustrating but let's be patient and don't lose hope!

according to MSAR: Alternate list invitations are issued in early April; alternates have 5 business days to respond to the alternate list offer or their alternate list offer will be withdrawn.

so perhaps they sent out initial acceptances in February and now they will be offering alternate list spots? who knows, but I think this will be an important month (unless the covid-19 situation delays things)

Knowing Downstate, "early" April means late April at best, most likely sometime in May. To be fair, however, this coronavirus pandemic is their #1 priority, so everything should be delayed.

Yeah by this time last year a lot more acceptances had been put out. I imagine April will mainly consist of acceptances being sent out, with alternative list offers being sent late-April/early-May.

That or we may be surprised and hear back today/tomorrow 😛

i went back and checked (cuz im bored) and ~ 20 acceptances were reported on sdn last year by this time, compared to like ~25 this year, so I think this month will consist mainly (probably exclusively) of alternate list offers.

dude you literally only post negative things on this thread. stop speculating and try to be positive.

He does have a reasonable point though. Also, Downstate explicitly said that alternate list would be determined in April, and there is no indication that further acceptance waves are coming. But idk I’m just a pessimist.

It seems unlikely though that all the people they interviewed in March and April were just interviewing for a spot on the alternate list though
Why does it seem unlikely ? If 10% of interviewees post acceptances here, then that’s about 250 acceptances handed out already — with a first year class size of 200. I don’t know what kind of yield Downstate gets, but it makes sense the majority of 2020 interviews are for alternate list. There is no negativity here, just being real that’s all.
Edit: just want to say I changed my opinion on this matter from a previous post

Damn, everyone getting so mad I’m being realistic and logical . Everyone on here is speculating one way or another. The waitlist movement has been pretty good here, so there’s plenty of hope there. I’m just telling people what might happen initially based on what happened last year, and there hasn’t been any indication it’ll be much different. I wish everyone good luck! It really is a crapshoot process.

I just don't think they'd waste their time interviewing dozens of people for the alternate list was all I was saying. If they have good candidates later in the cycle I can't imagine they'd just place them all on the alternate list, but that's just my thinking
Nah, they’re not wasting their time, they need an alternate list just in case some accepted students don’t attend. They’re really wasting OUR time.

I’d think that schools with extensive interviews for waitlists, have a lot of waitlist movement. So getting on the waitlist isn’t too bad, still a decent chance of getting in!
