2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone gotten an alternate list email yet? By this time last year a large amount of them were sent out

Nope. There's only been the wave of acceptances mid-Feb. They'll probably start putting out ALs soon, unless they're really backed up they may not do AL's at all at first and start handing out more direct acceptances as people drop Downstate after the 15th, or after the 30th when people need to commit to one acceptance.

My bet is they'll either
  1. Hand out ALs sometime before the 30th, which a lot of people will move off of starting May 1st (most likely)
  2. Not hand out ALs at first, and start accepting people directly around May 1st, and then put people on the AL.

Wouldn’t it be kind of pointless to create an alternate list at this point since April 30th is almost here.

I'd normally say yes, but it depends on if they were in the process of making it. Last year plenty of people were put on the ALs just to be offered an acceptance a week later so pointless or not it happens that way anyways. They also may not want to continue the silence for another 2 weeks, though who knows.

You also have to accept being put on the AL in a timely manner, so it would allow them to have a better understanding of those who want to matriculate before the 30th.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start throwing people on ALs now even though the 30th is almost here, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they didn't and just gave out direct acceptance after the 30th. *shrug*

TLDR: I'm really just talking out my ass and speculating, quarantine got me with nothing else to do besides work haha

Any idea when late interviewees will hear back? Interviewed 3/12 peer interview 3/22. This has been the most agonizing of all waiting periods.

No one has an idea when early interviews will hear back hahaha. April 30th is when people have to narrow their acceptances down to 1, so Downstate would have to start sending out a decent amount of acceptances/waitlists to fill up their class after that date. I'm not sure what the AAMC guidelines are, if any, on when people need to have a sort of decision after interviewing (whether accepted, rejected, or waitlisted), but I can't imagine anyone not knowing where they stand after May.

So yeah, I'd bet you will hear some sort of news between now and the end of May. Is this helpful? Probably not 😛

Probably a chance all those who are still waiting will hear in one go.

It's looking more and more like ALs may not be given at all in April, and after Downstate sees how many accepted students don't choose Downstate on April 30th they're most likely going to give out acceptances early May, probably a lump batch where anyone who interviewed between September and March could hear. Then ALs will be distributed.

This is of course speculation to pass the time, and I suppose there's still time for a large AL batch to be given out before May 1st.

It's so hard to not know. Should I still even hope?

Definitely no point in losing hope!

There will still be plenty of acceptances going out for Downstate. With the one acceptance wave they had in mid-February they, at the very best, sent out enough acceptances equal to their seat number but a lot of those students won't be matriculating come the Fall. At this point in the cycle there is usually a lot of alternative lists offers and then a lot of acceptances off the AL between now and July. It seems there are a lot of delays at Downstate I imagine mainly due to COVID19.

All you can do now is hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Good luck!

Could you clarify what you mean by "narrow their acceptances down to 1" by April 30th? I was looking at the timeline on the SUNY Downstate website and it seems to say that we only need to pay the deposit by April 30th. It isn't until July 13th that we need to settle down to 1 school.

Also, +1 to not being able to pay deposit.

I guess my wording was off, it's not when they /have/ to narrow their acceptances down to 1 but it's when commit to enroll becomes available. Medical schools at this time can also run detailed reports to identify accepted and alternate-list applicants who have selected “Plan to Enroll” or “Commit to Enroll” at their school versus another school, thus providing more room for schools to send out more offers as they'll have more information to work with and a better understanding of how many seats relative to the number of acceptances they've given out.

what are the chances of getting some kind of news before April 30? Obv this is all conjecture as no one knows for sure but just curious

I thought you have to narrow down to one school by 4/30 using plan to enroll, and then commit to whichever school you end up matriculating to based on that schools deadline right?

all of us out here waiting on downstate decisions like

I'm slowly becoming one with my chair staring at my email

question is are they sending these over time or did they send them all at once?

Just speculation, but my bet is this was one large batch sent at the same time given the various dates people interviewed and the bolus of the replies in this thread. Anyone who didn't receive it would probably be put on the AL or accepted sometime soon-ish.

I have no basis for these claims lol.

*refreshes communication status portal over and over again* the people in my zoom work meeting must think I'm hard at work typing notes.

Fingers crossed we potentially hear some AL/acceptances today. I've been trapped inside for a month (I'm sure like many of you) and I need some degree of change in my life before I crack completely haha.

Oof. Yup these are scary times, and uncertainty about our futures doesn't help. Hoping for the best for everyone here!

I know it might be tough, especially right now, but for the people who received R's, any inclination as to why you think you got a R?

This is literally the only school that has shown me love and I'm relying on it. 🙁

I also got the R today and I can only imagine its due to my grades and MCAT (they're both on the lower side)
My interview was was better than I could have hoped, both the in person and peer. So it must be the academic metrics! I can only assume.

I hope you get in somewhere though. Thanks for the insight. My grades are average, which is what scares me.

I'm sorry to hear about all these rejections everyone =((( Stay Strong

Also to everyone saying the couldn't pay their deposits, they fixed it now on their site, however they're asking to do a hard refresh before trying.

Hey, I feel you. Downstate was the only school that showed me love as well, I got 3 pre-interview holds. I didn't get to interview at those schools. I don't know if its due to covid19 or just bad luck. My interview was great. I am OOS though with no ties to NYS. From what I can tell, the interview does not hold so much weight. My rejection will be from my stats.
