2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you know of anyone who was able to find a scholarship? Is there any type of financial support available? What other things besides research can you do to up your CV?
I know some people have scholarships. I don't know where or why they got it. We only talk about finances when we are complaining about debt. I don't think Downstate has a huge financial aid budget, but I chose Downstate because it was my cheapest option. I had a ton of need-based aid from my undergrad, but no med school gave me money.

I would recommend doing research if you want to do something competitive. Research also helps for top programs in less competitive fields. If you don't want to do research, do whatever you like to do and do it well. Have some passion you could talk about. It could be anything

I feel like we won’t hear anything until May 4th or 5th because this Friday would be too good to be true SMH

Anecdotally, people got results immediately after April 30th and was weekly after that.

We’ll see. Very anxious and excited, yet slightly nauseous from the nervousness hahaha.

Well I cant just stop ringing the bell everyday.

*rings bell* 2 more sleeps! Or heck maybe just 1 more sleep.
One thing I learned from this entire process, "a watched pot never boils". I think the more I wait and check my email, the longer it will take to see any update lol

Let’s just not forget to plan to enroll to a school by tomorrow!!! I wouldn’t want anyone to forget because they’ve been waiting for DS and potentially lose their seat to med school!
That would be so tragic...I'm sure it happens to a handful of people every year lol

I think this system has only been in place for 1 or 2 cycles at this point, but it certainly happened last year lemme tell ya haha. I remember people making posts about their A being rescinded in May.

If we paid the deposit and have plan to enroll for Downstate we're good right? Just have to do commit to enroll in May? It's my only acceptance and I withdrew from all waitlists.
I'd also just double check with the acceptance email to make sure there isn't anything downstate specific

There is that cardiac training thing which we're supposed to do by July 1, but idk how that's going to work with COVID

There's a whole bunch of things on their checklist but the due date for these is no longer there? Does anyone have these due dates?

As long as your PTE'd by tomorrow you're fine. You don't have to CTE until July 13th I think, but since you plan on attending Downstate I'd choose CTE tomorrow, April 30th, when the option becomes available.

I received an acceptance for the MPH but nothing for MD yet. But I got the financial aid offer which shows tuition coa for MED1? I am so confused. Also are you guys putting down the deposit for MPH who haven’t gotten MD results? The deadline to submit is April 30th...

Yeah, I had the same thing happen. I thought they would be quoting the MPH for financial aid but they did MED1. I am waiting until tomorrow night to put down the deposit just in case lol.

I would definitely do research but is that alone enough to stand out? I mean idk what specialty I will be pursuing 100% but I don't want to have limitations in my app.

Hey ya'll, graduating fourth year here - congrats to everyone who got accepted!

A friend of mine just got accepted to Downstate. At 10PM lol. She applied MD only. She doesn't have an SDN account but would like to share that acceptances are coming out!

Also, Downstate gave her until tomorrow to respond by the April 30th deadline LOL

Congrats to her!!! And thanks for the info! Wow, sucks how they give her a day to decide! If it’s her dream school then she’ll have an easy choice!!

Any chance it’ll come before midnight? I feel like I have the *chuckles I’m in danger” meme replaying in my head

If their system is automated to check who is PTE'd/CTE'd, I think there's a chance any time after 5 pm we can receive a wave. It'll definitely be an ongoing process, and I imagine the spike will be tomorrow or early next week.

Last year, there was one on May 1 but this year’s app cycle is entirely different so I don’t know how similar it will be.

Yeah, and someone earlier in this thread said Downstate was trying a new automatic system and with the times that acceptances have been released it seems to be automatic. Also, the CYMS tool was new last cycle, so they may be quicker this cycle.

Either way, I wouldn't be surprised either if there's nothing today.

*Its already the last minute, everyone should have their decisions in by 5PM, or end of business.
*Do not assume that it will be fine until the morning or a few days. Since everything is computerized and automated, a school can have the system run an acceptance report off hours and rescind you in the middle of the night. Sound crazy? happened to a student last term.
*If you want an extension for some reason, you need express approval from both schools (or more) in writing (to CYA). Do not assume they will give it to you at this late hour.
*No school is required to give you any financial aid info prior to PTE/CTE. Some schools will not process or consider you for aid until you are committed. you will have to make a decision with information you have now, however incomplete it might be.
*dont screw around with this deadline else you may find yourself without a seat when the music stops

Does anyone else NOT see the PTE nor CTE options???? Mine just shows the Selected Medical School (I only had one acceptance, so I never narrowed it down to 3 on April 15th) Once I select the medical school, it wont let me select “I acknowledge and understand...”

Maybe PTE and CTE is not available for those with just one medical school A?? Or is this some glitch..

Thanks

EDIT: Just got the email that there is a technical issue and that AMCAS is working in it. Phew!! Boyyyy, was I scared for my future

Gonna be some delays it seems

If you have been accepted to another school does clicking plan to enroll automatically withdraw your app? Like I want to wait for Downstate’s decision, but at the same time I’m pretty sure I have to select PTE at this point.

PTE doesn't withdraw you from waitlists, only CTE. So definitely PTE to a school you've been accepted to today.

PTE lets u stay on WLs , CTE means youre 100% committed to that school and implies you will withdraw your name from all WLs

Alright y'all, I'm a bit more confused right now than I probably should be-- I've been accepted to one med school, but Downstate is by far my preferred option and I'm anxiously awaiting post-II communication like everyone else (interviewed early Feb). Yesterday (before the April 30th mark) I selected that other med school as my "Plan to Enroll" school on AMCAS because I thought I had to select one before today and still don't even know if that's the case... this won't impact Downstate's decision at all, correct?

As a side note, I've been lurking on this thread for a while now and greatly appreciate the anxious solidarity that you've all provided me as I lose my marbles waiting for some sort of communication from this school..... sending positive energy to you all and hoping for good news today 🙂 (or at least SOME news to get me out of this state of limbo)
