2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It just seems crazy for them to not at least HAVE a waitlist by the end of this week, so I'm banking on some sort of communication today... mostly because I think I'll go insane this weekend if I don't hear anything today lol

I emailed them last week and they told me that a final decision has not yet been rendered. Good luck
lmao same

this was me reading their response email (and anytime anyone asks me how is the app process going)

I feel like Downstate is playing a game of survival of the fittest with us. If you can survive this grueling silence throughout the cycle and not withdraw, then maybe they deem us worthy of acceptance.

Patience is their most revered virtue in a future physician.

I'll start a Zoom meditation class for all of us.

You can make an argument that this consititues an emergency lol

TBH at this point, it is kind of an emergency. Everyone has been waiting for the traffic day to even think about reapplying or not..
the mental toll this has on people without any acceptances is huge..

Specifically for downstate, people simply did not receive ANY decision 🙁

Oh I agree entirely lol. I’m just saying I’m not sure Downstate will see it that way

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as an aggressive post haha.

With all the COVID crisis, I think we all anticipated that there will be delays. However, I am sure that these committee members had several meetings up until now. It just seems so unprofessional them to not even let us know of their extremely delayed schedules going into May. All they needed to do was write up a two-three sentence email keeping in check with us.

Honestly I feel the worst for people whose accepted medical schools start earlier and are waiting for downstate to figure out if they need to move in the next month or so. That must be really stressful

That’s my situation as of now, and I know this is a good problem to have because just the other week I was planning a reapp. It’s especially nerve wrecking for those who didn’t get in yet and are waiting for Downstates decision... they’ve been waiting for weeks maybe months and Downstate hasn’t said a single word. You can literally apply again next week, so I think this is an emergency type situation.

I agree with you 100%. This is definitely taking a toll on people's mental health (it's adding extra stress during an already stressful situation that the pandemic is). All they have to do is sent out an email saying we are busy since we are a COVID only facility and we will get back to you by blank date. I completely understand that many, if not all, of the committee members, are treating patients right now and this might be a cause of the delay. But they should just keep us updated from time to time.
Not that this means anything but last year, people heard some results on May 1 and May 2. But again, this cycle is totally different so take this with a grain of salt

If I was in that situation, and I would send an email 2-3 weeks prior to the matriculation in the other school, informing downstate of the situation and asking them if it would be possible to receive a decision or when to expect a decision. They should understand a situation like that and do the right thing.
thank you!! if any others have some insight to this i’d appreciate the advice, esp since my payment is due May 11 😕

I’m not sure about all schools but I know that most loan payments for schools are refundable or able to be cancelled prior to disbursal at the start of the semester.

I remember when my interviewer said I should hear back by April and he can't think of a reason why I wouldn't hear back by then. Good times

I feel your pain. I think a lot of individuals were underestimating the impact COVID-19 would have, and Downstate was hit particularly hard compared to other hospitals in the city. Chin up! We may still hear today before midnight! 😀

I'm starting to see an uptick in As/WLs in other school-specific threads, so here's to hoping! Maybe their automatic system will send everything out at 5:01pm so administration wont have to answer e-mails in response to them until Monday hahaha 😛

Hey guys,

I have trouble signing in SUNY Downstate's application portal. Anyone else have the same problem? Thanks!

Officially withdrew from Downstate yesterday. It was an incredibly tough decision that I'm still not sure if I'm happy with, but I really hope you all hear back soon with good news.

Good luck with where you're going! It sounds like the decision was really tough for you but I'm sure you'll make the best of it and not regret a thing!
