2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
my theory (not that anyone asked)
I think the class isn't full; that statement was a direct copy and paste from last year. they're probably going in batches, waitlisting some, and accepting others. there will prob be more acceptances coming up and the next AL wave will cause a rearrangement in the internal ranking. don't be concerned if you haven't heard anything yet! have a good day y'all! <3

edit: and if the class is in fact full, they prob have a set number of slots for acceptances that they just haven't given out yet
How do we know that the waitlist is ranked ? All I remember from interview day is that the committee reviews your app and gives you a score like 1-5 or something. And that majority of alternate lists acceptance comes for instate residents.

Personally I feel it'd be sort of like the system you've said. They, lets say, rank applicants on a scale of 1-5. When someone withdraws, they find people who are similar to the applicant that withdrew and then take the one with the highest scaled score of that bunch.

Makes sense.

My friend who is a first year DS student said he emailed admissions and was told that “applicants are given a number” But I agree with what you’re saying!

Yeah they definitely seem to be a week or two behind the process. Which will be interesting to see how this plays out since the April 30th deadline is already passed so everyone who dropped DS would have done so already (for now anyway)

is the April 30th deadline when they have to narrow down to one acceptance or when they are able to?

Any current students care to talk about the research opportunities at Downstate?

I haven't been on sdn in years until like two weeks ago and i've been watching this thread but my guy if downstate does not accept you... I'm going to have a problem lol... you've get a big cheerleader here for you! You got this my guy! @AnonymousDoctorGuyPerson

Hahahaha, thank you! <3 That really means a lot. Positivity and optimism are essentially my only personality traits lmao, and I hoped I could put it to good use here because I know we can all use it. Im glad I get to share it with one of the most supportive school-specific discussion threads I've ever seen. If there's one thing we can all agree on, Downstate did a hell of a job on choosing who they brought in to interview this cycle.

They should just make the Class of 2024 be 400 students hahaha

Are we supposed to do something to know what financial aid we get if accepted?? (I submitted FAFSA last year) I cant make a decision without it 🙁

How many days do you have until you're forced to commit? I believe they send an email with your NETID and PW automatically when your package is ready, probably within at least 48hrs at this point (though I'm just speculating).

If they dont id definitely email admissions and let them know that your decision relies on your access to financial aid

Good luck!

Oh yeah for those who wanted to know, since the AL portal was clearly copy and paste I assume that the "attached form" part is copy and paste also and isn't actually supposed to be there? and all we have to do is fill out the section on that section on the app?

They also didn't respond to my email asking about that and they usually are responsive so maybe they didn't want us to know it was a copy paste? LOL

I also emailed them yesterday with maybe too many questions haha. They havent got back yet either, maybe they're really busy, hopefully preparing for more As to be delivered 😛

Why do they send stuff out around midnight? I would guess because they’re automatic but the times are quite random so is someone sending them out manually that late ?

Has anyone who interviewed earlier than Nov and not heard back yet emailed the admissions? If so, did they give the same generic answer?

It is so hard to think that they have not reached a decision for me :/

Thanks so much. We have 5 business days to make a deposit and secure our spot. Do you know if I need to pay the deposit to get the NETID?

Although I have yet to hear from them, I think I saw on this thread that you can find it under "pre-matriculation" tab..correct me if I'm wrong..

Can I hear back DS..?

ALs and some As came two days in a row. Not saying news will come today but it’s happened already so I guess it’s possible

Wow the fact that now I have to be on my toes until at least 1am kind of sucks.. but I remain hopeful with positive vibe after going through @AnonymousDoctorGuyPerson 's encouraging words everyday lol

So I got accepted to the MPH but I am still on the alternate list for the MD program... The MPH starts on May 20th, so I am very confused about the timeline here: what happens if I don’t get off the alternate list on time to start the MPH? Does anybody know if the MPH is contingent on getting accepted to the MD or if I could do the MPH this year if I end up not being accepted to medical school at all?
Any help/info would be appreciated

If you haven’t already emailed them asking about your situation and gotten a response (2-3 days post-email), I honestly think this would warrant using the emergency line especially with the May 20th start date approaching.

I believe that you can do the MPH separately from the MD program. Those two aren't contingent on each other. Also, they extended the MPH application deadline to May 31, why would they start the program on May 20? It doesn't make sense, so they probably messed something up again. Just to be safe, email them and inquire about this since they are the only ones that can provide a solid answer. Good luck.
Just checked online; I think MD/MPH students would start their MPH on May 20 with the start of the summer semester, whereas MPH only students would start in either the summer or fall. This situation is super confusing though... I’m sorry @ScaredLittlePremed

If you look at the academic calendar online, the MPH starts on June 15th! June 10th is orientation for new SPH students (although classes are online so I am not sure how that is going to work). Program is separate from the MD, so you can complete the MPH without the MD. Hope this helps, good luck!

Did anyone just get an email from downstate saying that you had not submitted the yes/no alternate form on the portal, even though you did?
Edit: got the email at 9:27pm on 5/9

I didn’t either

Does anybody know if the alternate list is ranked? If it is, did anybody email admissions to know where they are ranked on the waitlist?

Thanks for letting me know guys! And hmm I know someone previously said a current student emailed admissions and they were told the list is ranked. I personally haven’t asked where along the list I’m ranked. I’m sure it’s not out of line to ask especially if you’re sitting on a couple other A’s and need to make a decision soon.

Not to be a debbie downer but tbh I feel like AL movement won’t happen relatively soon. This was seen a few days ago when people who never received the AL email got acceptances. Seems like DS is still going thru apps before throwing them in the AL pool. My theory is that as seats become available, the ADCOM will choose from this non-AL list. Once that’s been exhausted they will proceed with the AL. Sure, you can be ranked as #1 on the AL list but that’s only after they finish with their app reviews of the non-ALs

Again, just speculating from what we’ve witnessed so far..

I guess I just don't understand why they wouldn't people the non-AL people on an AL and just rank them higher if they have to wait for others to withdraw their A.

Good point. Cuz they probs haven’t done their final review of all the apps yet. Like someone previously said, it’s most likely in batches.
