2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you on the WL are you filling out the check list - if so where do you know to send the citizenship or BLS verification

Hi guys, I'm a nontrad applicant who was accepted so forgive me for the stupid question. Part of confirming acceptance w/in 5 days involves clicking plan to enroll/commit to enroll through AMCAS's select a med school tool? That's what they mean by choosing plan to enroll/commit w/in 5 days right?

Alternates: You must complete ALL the items listed on the pre-matric checklist in order to be considered for Admissions to the Class entering Fall 2020

really?? like all of our health records?! I completed everything that was clickable, and I also emailed student health the medical release authorization and meningitis thing. but there's nothing else I can do...

I imagine youre fine and that's the same writing from previous years, I'm sure DS realizes it's very difficult to get some of those forms at this time - which may be why they arent clickable/have instructions for us to follow.

I'm going to wait until the end of the week for further instructions/clarification before I email them to ask. I didn't want to bombard them with questions when they just released the list and are probably dealing with technical difficulties.
I was also going to ask about the BLS certification because idk if my computer is tweaking, but NYC doesn't have any available courses and the ecourse isn't sufficient for certification.

Yes you select PTE or CTE on AMCAS.

I got the A yesterday but it doesn’t show up on my AMCAS just yet. You should check if its updated for you since your A was earlier

To, hopefully, give yall some extra hope in this thread there was a pretty big AL wave Mid-May last year (15th/16th), with more or about the same As given before it I believe than we've seen yet this cycle. Given the fact that DS is also probably behind, and the fact that other schools are behind on their WL movement (so fewer withdrawals at this time), we ain't through the thick of it yet!

To add on to this, I just called another med school in NE region and they are also behind this cycle and they said movement will start next week for their waitlist. So hang in there y'all!

Downstate told me that Study Styles will be updated once an internal report is ran. I completed it days ago and it's still not updated on the checklist so we just have to wait

Well what are the pros/cons. Is money an issue? Are you IS vs OOS?
Not as much a money issue. But I think I rather be near NYC for my med school and clinical years. I currently live in NYC and my family/friends live here. I’m not sure where I want to end up residency wise but I know they both match well for the schools they are (not ivy leave top rank etc). I think Downstate May be the better choice for me as I could live in dorms with other students and meet people vs live in my home at Long Island with family. I think Downstate would be the better choice and proximity to Manhattan is something that is a priority for me.

Sounds like your heart was set on Downstate! Great choice, see you in August! (hopefully if first sem isn't online)

Does anyone know where to get a physical exam and the labs done in NYC? Seems like the hospitals all switched to virtual visits now.

You don’t have primary care doc ?
They could potentially be in my situation - no insurance. I was actually going to ask the same question if anyone has the answer.

Though I've recently applied for Medicaid so hopefully that that kicks in in time, I doubt Downstate is holding out As for those on the AL who don't get in these forms haha so I've got some time

I called my PCP and told them that I need to get forms completed and they told me to come in even though their office is closed. You can get a lab visit done at CityMD if your PCP is strictly telemedicine, but I'm not sure what to do about completing a physical since CityMD doesn't complete those

Urgent care offices are open like Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care, CityMD, etc. You can go in person, get the forms filled out.
Also, you can go to the CVS minute clinic. They can do physical exams, titers, vaccinations, etc or try a free community clinic.

Thanks! I had forgotten about the CVS minute clinics, it's been a minute *insert drum emoji*

So are you guys (AL people) planning to finish all the pre-matric checklist (BLS, Model Release, Proof of Citizenship, Tech. Standard, and Healthforms) as soon as possible?

I just did the quickly submittable things like Model Release, Technical Standards, etc. I'll get the other stuff done ASAP when I'm accepted (I'm speaking with confidence lmao).

No. I'm waiting until the sent an email informing us that the pre-matric checklist needs to be completed. I'm not wasting my money and time on this.

Ah ok, I was worried about whether I have to spend potentially another few hundred bucks on these. It would suck to spend that much and be no use. I might as well save it up for reapplication fee lol

Have you guys sent in proof of citizenship? If so which email did you guys submit it to..

I haven't because the only email I've seen for sending documents on the checklist is the health forms. I assume/hope more instructions will follow.

I could also just be blind and missing it haha

No unfortunately I don't have a PCP. I do have insurance and I am hoping that the labs and vaccines are covered.

I emailed admissions and they said all completed health forms can be emailed to student health. So I think that means we do need to do those.

Hmm I see, I did get a hold of my immunization record just so I can bypass having to be tested again for all my lovely antibodies lol
I guess the most time-consuming forms are these healthforms and we just have to get this in before the class starts. I think as long as we know what to do as soon as we get accepted to acquire these documents, we should be good to go.

I haven't sent in my proof of citizenship. There is no email to send it to.

The whole pre-metric list is weird to me like why do they need all of these forms etc. The other school that I am waitlisted at doesn't ask for any of these documents in order to be considered for acceptance. Have you guys came across schools with similar requirements?

This is what I thought. Maybe they do take a long time to get these forms processed? I am not sure but also their health forms seem to be more complicated compared to what I had to provide to my undergrad and grad schools.

Their admissions deposit is only $100. The fact that you might have to spend more money getting the physical and BLS certification than the deposit when we're not guaranteed admissions at this point is a little outlandish IMO. I went ahead and filled out as much of everything that didn't involve spending more money as possible. I'm all for staying in NYC but the way that DS approaches this really got me feeling some typa way.

I understand that, what bothers me is why should we grant them access to all of our personal information (medical records, citizenship, etc) if they won't even accept some of us from the AL? (worst case scenario).

And make us sign that "Model Release" lol scam alert!! Jk, I still want an acceptance and want to believe that they want these documents for my sake.. 🙁

While required, I still do not think not having them is affecting anyone's admission chances - at least at this time. Maybe into June/July they may start taking some preference for those on the AL who have gotten through their checklist.

It would be quite disturbing if it does affect our chances hahaha and if they measure our level of commitment/likely hood of coming to their school by seeing how much money we spent lol
