2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To ease everyone's stress I e-mailed them about the requirements of the pre-matriculation list as an alternate student.

I had to e-mail them anyways because I accidentally submitted the "White Coat Form," which had the wrong information in it and also isn't even a requirement for AL students to submit so I had to ask them to please reset that form for me haha.

I look forward to the mini heart attack I'll get when they respond to my e-mail and I get a notification that Downstate has emailed me haha.

Does anyone know of anyone getting off the alt list who was placed on it on May 6th?

CityMD does complete physicals. If you are uninsured the visit can be hefty (200 bucks), but usually, most workups and shots are included in this fee. So if you don't have a PCP and can't find another alternative, this could be your best bet. However, if you've got a buddy that works at CityMD they can usually waive your co-pay due to the friends and family discount.

Anyone else think that the AL movement on Monday was a bit of a mess up on Downstate's part? Like they meant to outright accept those people but sent them an AL email by accident? Why else only accept people that were put on the list the day before?

Not sure because similar things happened last cycle too. People were put on the AL only to hear back very soon after

My apologies for the misinformation. When I called one of the CityMDs they told me they don’t perform physicals which didn’t make much sense but I’m guessing it might be due to COVID-19

That’s probably corona related because all the ones I’ve been to definitely did some basic physicals

Could be... Alternatively, Monday could have been the first day DS analyzed the number of withdrawals s/p traffic day and noticed they had a fair amount of seats open. Those put on the AL on Sunday were probs ranked high on the list, so DS said “hey why not”

Or...it was an accident lol

Hmm I see, I did get a hold of my immunization record just so I can bypass having to be tested again for all my lovely antibodies lol
I guess the most time-consuming forms are these healthforms and we just have to get this in before the class starts. I think as long as we know what to do as soon as we get accepted to acquire these documents, we should be good to go.

I did e-mail student health and they require the immunizations AND the titers. They said they put up the wrong forms and it was too late to change it.

So they e-mailed me back, but didn't directly answer my questions - here's what was said:

"Thank you for your email and interest in SUNY Downstate Health Science University. A pdf copy of the documents can be upload to the application or emailed. Official transcripts can be sent directly from your school electronically or via mail if electronic is unavailable. Please work with AHA to take a BLS course."

I wonder if they really read the email carefully lol the most important question was not answered

It has nothing to do with working with AHA If we can’t physically go out and take a course right now. Even the online AHA courses still have an in person skills test

So I emailed before and got a reply. The deadline to fulfill most things on the prematric list is July 1. For the things with no email listed or link to submit the forms (i.e. BLS), use the document upload part of the portal. The same place you would submit an LOI.

For proof of US citizenship do you just need one document? So is a passport sufficient or are they requesting 2 documents (birth certificate)

it doesn't specify. Im sure either is fine since theyre both considered primary evidence of citizenship

I don't even think I have a passport that isn't expired LOL. What else can we use?

According to the department of state, primary evidence can be a
"Fully-valid, undamaged U.S. passport (can be expired)" 🙂

I actually believe you can use an expired passport

So when I e-mailed, they said to send the documents to the admissions e-mail. Also, they told me proof of citizenship would be a passport or birth certificate. They gave me no other helpful info lol.

A passport is sufficient or a birth certificate either or would do.

Is this the official fb group?
It’s the only one that exists? It has 55 people now. Not sure if it’s “official”!

Edit: The COM 2023 group has Downstate SAffairs as an admin and this group doesn’t. It’s probably not official, but not sure why it exists/ is the only one searchable. They probably haven’t made the new one yet.

I was thinking that group may be for undergrad, since the description says “Welcome Freshman.” Hopefully, admin team will make a group sometime soon. I believe someone earlier in this thread had written it is usually created in mid-May

hm I don’t think it’s for undergrad because it’s COM and all the people starting are doing the MD program but yeah they will probably make an official one soon.

Also I feel like theres a 99% chance the fall classes are going to be fully online. Some undergrad colleges are doing this and downstate is still a COVID only hospital. Not looking good. :/

It’s still only May. Give it some time. We have no idea what August will look like

Hey all, absolutely love all the positivity in this thread! Currently sitting on the AL which I got on May 6th. I just got an acceptance yesterday to another SUNY school, however I'd prefer to attend Downstate. Do people think that updating Downstate on the fact that I was accepted to this other school is a good idea? Thanks in advance!

You can send a letter of intent with that information on it.. but otherwise they can see you’ve been accepted elsewhere at this point I’m pretty sure.

One of the benefits of going to Downstate is the early clinical experience, so I really hope this isn't the case =(((

HMS and many many other institutions are switching to online already. So even though the situation is going to be better by August its very possible we will be online. Some schools have totally separate buildings from the hospital but with DS the education building is pretty integrated with the hospital building so I'm sure that plays a huge roll in deciding.

Just wanted to check and see if anyone emailed admissions on if we are on the waitlist we have to complete everything prior to being accepted or is it just if we are accepted we need to complete that checklist?

For those who will be proving NYS residency via bank statements. Can we cover the actual bank info.? I doubt they need to know how much are in in my checking/savings

Try to complete as much as you can by July 1
