2019-2020 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wayne has a form that you can fill out for them to give you feedback. I recommend asking schools for feedback as to why you *aren’t* receiving IIs. Maybe also have some med students read your personal statement. There’s a lot of med students that you can find on Reddit who are willing to give feedback on your personal statement. I even suggest asking doctors you know/shadow what they think you can do to improve your application. Oftentimes it’s hard to see our own weaknesses, even the things we consider to be our weaknesses may not be the same as adcoms. Try to get as much insider insight as possible.
Easier said than done, but keep your head up. The cycle is ruthless and doesn’t define you. Not to sound cliche, but everything happens for a reason. Steve Jobs once said “you cannot connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” You got this!!

Not really, it’s all luck. I worked with the adcom for over a year and they went through my application and gave me the green light(PS,GPA,MCAT and Experiences). It really depends on the person screening you. Some of the screeners are really strict while others are laidback. Went for a meeting and they simply told me to reapply edp.

Man, this sucks. I did so much to improve my application from last time and still got zero IIs this year.

I don’t even know what else to do to improve my for next time. Feel like I’ve done everything I could.
Sorry to hear, I know it's frustrating. Hang in there though, as there are some schools that are sending invites all the way into April so there's still some time. Have you sent any updates to schools that allow them? I know WSU allows up to 5.

There is nothing wrong with reapplying several times. I'm a reapplicant myself and I might end up having to apply again (currently DO-waitlisted, MD-post II-SUC). I personally know a doctor who had to apply 3 times before he was accepted, but he went on to match IM at MGH so I wouldn't take II-absence as a personal slight against your ability to be a great doctor.

The application process is so competitive and random that it's becoming near impossible to stand-out unless you have some sort of "wow-factor." Before reapplying, you might consider taking a year or two off to do something that you might be really excited to do like Peace-/Ameri-corp, significant research, clinical experience, international volunteer work, or perhaps enrolling in a medical-school pipeline SMP.

I'm not accepted yet so take all I've said with a grain of salt. But good luck and I hope you hear something soon.

When you say Adcom, are you referring to an Adcom member or a few members ?

Are you saying that a screener looks at a subset of applicants (50-100)?

I have seen people on this thread with my stats (MCAT being my primary focus) who have gotten IIs and were accepted

Either I applied too late, or I'm just too "bland."

A friend who got into this school told me a few years ago this whole process is a crap shot

You can be accepted up to the first day of classes. I was accepted 2 weeks before class started, and we had someone accepted the friday before classes started. There is no "silent rejection", you will be notified by that time if you have been accepted or not

I also knew of a Friday acceptance before the start of classes. The person had already submitted fresh AMCAS apps to a bunch of schools. Worked out but only after the person dropped another large sum of money

yes this is definitely true! the person screening your app definitely has a huge influence in the decisions. I am also a current applicant so I should've added that I really don't have ground to stand on, I just thought it could be helpful if I shared some advice that has been given to me and let the OP/others on the thread know about the Feedback form because I think it could be helpful to get any kind of feedback, even if it is just adcom saying to try applying EDP. I just wanted to spread some positivity knowing how tough the cycle can be on each applicant!

At my interview, I remember the dean of admissions said that they once accepted someone 30 minutes before the start of classes... it ain't over til it's over I guess lol

That I don't know. Only thing I have been told is that, your application is randomly given to a screener and they either recommend for an interview, hold or rejection(Only if application is really not to their standards). Screeners are given a set of criteria to remain impartial but the point system is subjective.

Sigh, I guess this is the end of the road in terms of possibly getting an II

This is so true

Would be awesome if a current student could comment on the anatomy labs here. How many members are there for cadaver and are all 290 students in one anatomy lab at one time or are there multiple sessions/locations for each lab. Thnx

Ask and ye shall receive!

Current M1 here. Our gross anatomy labs are all held at one time because the labs are just so damn big! Imagine one looooooooong hallway partitioned only partially by walls and 50 autopsy tables distributed evenly throughout. This is the gross anatomy lab. There will be about 5-6 people assigned to a table: this is your gross anatomy group. You meet with them starting at orientation and a lot of your required events are divided up by gross anatomy group so you will see a lot of them throughout your first 2 years.

Lab sessions are introduced beforehand in lectures throughout the unit so everyone knows what to do and what to look for during each lab. We also have "open lab" times before lab so if you feel like you need to finish up from the last dissection or want to get ahead on this one, you can. Before exams, we also have open lab on weekends to study.

Hope that helps!

Hello - For those who are accepted (congrats!!) and have already submitted all their transcripts AND were marked received in the Pre-Matriculation page of the portal, did they also updated your pre-requisite courses (Bio, Chem, Orgo, Physics, English) to complete/received/met? Thank you.

Is today (February 10th) the final final day for all the pre-II people? The day that we find out if we got an II or get an R?

If your transcript is not automatically recognized and your prerequisite list marked "incomplete" (that was the case for me), you should write admissions with a list of courses that you believe meet the requirements for each course. They will update it accordingly.

Not yet, although receipt of transcripts was updated in January, prerequisite fulfilment is unchanged remaining, partially correct incorrect/incomplete.

Thank you. How long after you sent a letter with information regarding corrections did it take for those corrections to appear?

When does WSU send out merit-based scholarship offers or financial aid offers to accepted students?

Based on post #1,381 and post #1471 on this thread by Renzelgunz. Says they know someone on the adcom.

Been confirmed by two sources . Both stated that they're wrapping things up today. Not sure if it means that they are deciding for a final wave or we all getting rejected. Either way no stress, we should be focusing on reapplying now. Chances for invite are dim.

When you're put on the waitlist or accepted, does the portal update accordingly?
