2019-2020 Wayne State

I heard it was close to 70% when factoring in waitlists that turn into acceptances. I'm not entirely sure though...I've also heard that people that interview after the new year are all waitlisted. Does anyone know how true that is?
I've heard the same numbers and find it hard to believe. Wayne supposedly interviews near 1,500 applicants, which would mean >1,000 acceptances for ~290 seats if it were 70%. This would violate the rule of thumb that schools offer about 2 to 3 acceptances per seat in the class. If they followed this rule instead, the post interview acceptance rate would be about 58%, or 870 acceptances.

Anyone know roughly when accepted students will be able to get some sort of official proof of enrolment beside the admission letter to be able to apply for loans with banks?

Yeah, this seems quite high to me as well. Who really knows though.

They don’t interview nearly that many usually. According to the MSAR, they interviewed 853 applicants. They seem to just have a really low conversion rate from interview invites to actual interviews.

Your are looking at old MSAR data from 2 cycles ago. Last cycle Wayne began interviewing 1000-1200 apps and are planning on doing so again this cycle rather than the 853ish I think 2 cycles ago. This will also change the number of As sent out and the %. MSAR will update in March I think

I hadn’t considered the number of IIs that turn into actual interviews, but that might be the missing link if 70% is accurate. The number that really blows my mind is 77% for OOS post interview. As an OOS who interviewed, I’ll feel pretty bad if I don’t get in lol

I’m aware that it is old data, but I think 1500 interviews seemed a little unlikely at this point. 1000 seems like a reasonable estimate though.

There was a comment on the last thread at about the end of the cycle that I was able to find. It was posted on Feb 13:

I just found out that the admission tracker has been updated:
Applications- 9988
Interviews requested- 1434
Interviews completed- 901
Admission offers- 307

Congrats to all those who are accepted!

Have any accepted students who plan on attending Wayne looked into housing yet? Or potential roommates? Or know anything about second look weekend or a fb group? I know it’s early but I’m just itching for any info lol thanks
Was wondering the same thing!

If she’s shy of the requirement she will definitely not receive an interview through the EDP program. Most likely will be deferred to regular app pool. To apply EDP at Wayne you HAVE to meet the minimum academic requirements. Doesn’t matter if you’re only one point off. She should write it a fourth time and get the required score

You don't think her doing it a fourth time, even if she reaches the requirement, would negatively affect her? Like something along the lines of, "why did it take four tries to get that score?"

Honestly EDP isn’t for everyone but don’t discount it all together. For some applicants it can be of significant benefit to apply through EDP. Just keep in mind that it is a holistic process. Don’t slack on your app and references. It makes a huge difference. I wouldn’t say med school admission is purely a numbers game, more so a very unpredictable process. I applied to 13 schools last year right at the beginning of the cycle and didn’t get a single II. This year I applied EDP to Wayne and got in. Obvs some things in my app changed significantly but I also feel that in my circumstances EDP benefited me by forcing my app to be looked at and given a response to. Also Wayne was not only the school that I wanted to go to most but also the one that was the best fit for my circumstances. Also if your app isn’t good enough to be considered for RD you won’t get in via EDP. Just to summarize, meet the min academic requirements for EDP and spend a lot of time on writing a quality app, get good references and practice for the interview and EDP will likely do you good

A lot of that definitely applies to her, yeah. She wants to stay in the area for family, she's passionate about Wayne State's goals.

So you think a fourth retake to get her up to the EDP requirement + all the other stuff you listed in that second post would help?

I've looked a little bit for apartments but don't really know what to look for... was hoping to talk to a current student for recommendations. I wanna find potential roommates but no fb group which sucks. Also, I talked to admissions and they said they don't have second look info and told me that its only for a select # of accepted students and those students will receive information in the mail

Oh thanks for responding! Thats strange that it’s only for selected students, I was hoping to gain more info at second look. I was looking into apartments today but yeah it’s difficult when you’re not sure who you’ll want to live with.

What's the post interview acceptance rate at Wayne State?
This is last year's stats- 286 oos and 286 Is. I think they interviewed less people last year though ( around 1300).

Hi there! Current student at WSUSOM.

In terms of housing, most students live in midtown/downtown or out in the suburbs (Dearborn, ferndale, royal oak, etc).
Living in midtown is nice if you don't have a car and want to be close to school. It is however more expensive and difficult to go grocery shopping due to lack of grocery stores in detroit other than Whole Foods/eastern market.

There is on campus housing (the union/studio one). These are pretty expensive, about 900 for your own room/bathroom and you will have a roommate that I believe you can pick. Everyone i know who lives there lives with another med student. It is about a 10min walk to campus/DMC and it is really close to the gym.

Living in the burbs, you will get more space for your money, have access to more food and other shopping (target, Walmart, Costco, etc) but you will need to drive. Royal oak/ferndale is about 20-25 mins depending on time of day and traffic level.

The FB will be set up soon! Current Senate will take care of that and it should help coordinate roommates.

Is it true anyone who interviews in the new year is essentially waitlisted due to application volume?

current WSUSOM student and part of the student committee for interview day for applicants. Unfortunately, due to high applicant volume, the vast majority of students who interview after the new year will have to be waitlisted. BUT FEAR NOT!! you will be the first off the wait list in April and early May, taking priority over those WL before christmas.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. How is parking? If I recall currently our tour guide said that it is expensive and often full.

Can you explain that a bit more? I was waitlisted in October after interviewing in August. Does that mean that the waitlist is ranked and people who interviewed early are at the bottom, but those who are interviewing now will be at the top?

Hmm that is interesting about the parking. I'm not sure why they would have said that. So per semester it is 220 and it will allow you access to 2 lots. The structure near the med school is never full, at least 3 levels are empty every day. Maybe this person lives on campus and the lot they park in near their house fills up?

The lot for med students doesn't have undergrad parking usually, only med students, faculty and staff. I came from a big university with horiffic parking and parking at WSUSOM has been a breeze compared to that nightmare!

yeah so this making me think i shouldve just interviewed later as that would technically improve my chances for movement off the WL. NGL not sure how this one works out chief

If true, it kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth regarding the admissions process...

I'm a fellow applicant myself so am unsure of the whole process, but what I think that person meant is that some of people who are waitlisted after interviewing into the new year would have been accepted if the adcom had ample time to review the application. I think putting them on the waitlist just buys more time to review the app, but then again that's just my guess

Hmmm. I think our tour guide was an undergrad student (which I was very surprised by) so maybe that explains it

I recall something like this being discussed last year. Basically adcoms ran out of time to actually review apps right away so automatically put everybody on the WL who interviewed after a certain date

yes, thanks for clarifying

Interviewed 12/9, Decision this morning: Alternate List

Also, this has been the fastest turnaround post-interview. I am still waiting on a school I interviewed back in November 😱

Good luck everyone!!

Honestly it's really frustrating that Wayne State works this way. If this was the norm between all of the medical schools then I'd understand but it's not. Stringing along applicants on a waitlist and waiting until near the end of the cycle to admit most of their students is unfair and stressful for the applicant.

I'm in a fortunate position where I have an acceptance in hand already, but I am currently deciding between a different school (and the hopeful acceptance to this school) which is a decision I'd rather not have to 100% make last minute. I can't even imagine what it must be like for someone that has 0 acceptances and is sitting on this waitlist waiting until 1-2 months before start of classes to know that they're going to medical school and uproot their life to make the proper adjustments (including for some moving across the country...).

That's whats distasteful about the way Wayne handles their admissions, very disappointing and adds unnecessary stressors to the applicant's life (which we already have plenty of).

I personally also wrote the mcat 3 times. The third attempt I was one point below my second attempt (but still above the requirements) During my interview they didn’t comment on the number of times I took the mcat. They just acknowledged the average percentile of my recent two attempts. I don’t think that taking it a fourth time would negatively affect her. If they do question her then she can put a positive spin on it about how passionate she is about med school and Wayne that she wanted to make sure she got the score she needed. A lot of the interview is what you make of it tbh. Having a positive outlook and relating everything to your passion for med and Wayne should help her get through with ease. If she gets the minimum marks for EDP she will get an interview, atleast that’s how it’s been the past few years

Did anybody who sent an update get an II? Also does it look like they are done sending IIs?

Hey everyone I had two questions,

1) What is the most appropriate email to send a letter of intent? I was waitlisted in mid-Novemeber and know this is the program I would like to attend.
2) Is it appropriate to send updates post-interview? I have been very busy since my interview with multiple jobs and would like to update them if possible.

I think I read somewhere on this thread or an earlier one that Wayne prefers you upload all LOI/update letters to the applicant portal.

this is 100% an AAMC problem
