2020 Prompts:

We understand this is a particularly stressful time for applicants so we have published our Secondary essay prompts early this cycle to allow more time for reflection. To ensure applicants have plenty of opportunity to share their unique stories and to enhance our holistic review as we shift to virtual interviews, we have also added two additional questions.

Essay 1
Comment on how you hope to impact medicine in the future. If examples are needed, feel free to refer to our eight Paths of Excellence. Do not exceed 1500 characters (about 250 words).

Essay 2

my characters for my essays are slightly over 1500. i pasted it into the forms, and it looks like they are all in. would they be cut after they're processed?

Is it appropriate to use the first prompt as a little bit of "why Michigan?"

Is the first wave of secondaries going to those with high stats? Wanted to confirm with ppl who got the mich secondary already
I got the secondary today and have meh stats for them (514 MCAT/ 3.85 GPA) but sumbitted 6/4 and was verified 6/23, so no def not high stats first

Does it say anywhere on the portal that your CASPER results have been received?

Just wanna know if it'll even show up on the portal (I took the test May 20th)

Wondering same thing, not sure

It says my application is complete even though my school has not sent our committee letters yet. Is that normal? I thought you needed your LoR's to be complete

I'm in the same situation. Would be interesting if they actually reviewed apps and sent out II's without letters being in.

Did anyone figure out the problem of CASPER being registered in the portal? The portal seems to think I'm still missing my CASPER score but I took it back on June 4 and sent it to Michigan

Neurotic question, but... does anyone know if line breaks are preserved in the secondary? I'm looking at the post-submission form HTML, where it looks like it my separate paragraphs were combined into one big paragraph for each question. Is this just because of the HTML format?

As I understand the secondary it allows answers over 1500 characters so you might consider adding in extra linebreaks to make sure they come through on the final version

I added extra ones in between each paragraph (and included those in the cc count - still under 1500), but even still the HTML version showed up as a big chunk 🙁. I'm just hoping that it looks different on the adcom end

Are you all going to do anything for the "additional uploads"? I have a paper abstract, poster, or a professional headshot I could upload?

Does anyone have any advice on how to indicate strong ties to Michigan? I have a ton of family in Ann Arbor, and my father is from there.

I just submitted my secondary here and it says that they received my primary application but then tells me to schedule my CASPer date which I took 7/28.

Does everyone who took it 7/28 have the same message?

Could be worth emailing Admissions

Mine said that when I submitted (7/10) and I had already taken the CASPer (6/4). I assume you meant 6/28 because if you have already taken a future CASPer date, I would be both concerned and impressed 🤣. I just re-checked and my secondary status says "Complete and under review". You may want to check to see if your CASPer status is also "Completed - results delivered" to ensure that the results have been sent to the schools in your distribution list.

Oops yeah I meant 6/28 and on CASPer site it says delivered but my secondary status doesn’t say that... it says they received my primary application and “please complete your secondary application using this portal. As soon as possible, schedule your CASPer date if you haven’t already done so. Your file will not be complete until your CASPer score, your secondary application and payment have been received.”

Is that happening to everyone? It looks like one giant paragraph for me as well

I found this reddit post that asks a similar question (albeit for Cornell). Apparently it shows up like this for a lot of schools, but what we see when we submit is (hopefully?) different than what the adcoms will see

I took CASPER 6/28 and it's been marked received. I'd give it a couple of days while they match all the stuff they've gotten together and if it's still not received then call them.

In general are you guys indenting you’re essays for schools? When I copy and paste my essays some of them have the first paragraph not indented so not sure what to do

OOS Secondary (CA resident) received 7/15 around 7pm PST (verified 7:30pm PST on 7/15), submitted 7/15 around 11pm PST

If I have multiple paragraphs for an essay, I hit enter (full line of spacing) in between each one.

ope. didn't see the other comments saying that even when you enter between paragraphs, they still combine into one big paragraph in the HTML version. already submitted, so for anyone still trying to get separate paragraphs I'm not sure if there's any way around this

Really stupid question, but do we type our name or leave the box blank on page 6/6 labelled "Official Use Only" ???

is anyone else having connectivity issues trying to get into the applicant portal after submitting the secondary?

Is the issue new today? When I had been on the app yesterday, it said that the site was going to be undergoing maintenance from 5am PDT today until 12:01 am PDT on monday, and so it would be unavailable. I was hoping it wasnt really true/would somehow still be available but it seems like it isn’t, which is pretty inconvenient

That's a shame. Was planning on submitting today

I had access to it yesterday and it had an announcement saying there would be website maintenance until Sunday night I believe. Has nothing to do with UMICH, it's related to the website provider
