2020-2021 Oregon Health and Science University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
the numbers that are tossed around a lot are 80/10/10 (hold/reject/accept) right after interviews... not sure how accurate that is though but that's what I've heard here time and time again
when you mention right after interviews are you referring to 8-12 weeks post-interview? (I think the soonest I have heard of someone hearing back is ~4weeks as part of the 10% accept group). Thanks.

at my interview they told us we would hear back 4-8 weeks
same, I was hoping that we could hear back sooner... then again, that would just increase the neurotic checking of the portal

Last year, I was placed on hold 3 days after my interview so it just depends on when your interviewer can make it to an adcom meeting to discuss you. Sorry if that increases your neurotic portal checking lol I've been there myself.

Anyone know about when interviews are stopped being sent out?

I would say most know in 3-10 weeks, variable of course based on who your 1:1 is and when you get discussed at a committee meeting

Also - for those who this will influence your decision on schools (should be all of you) - OHSU is vaccinating med students as part of the first wave and many of us (myself included) have received both doses. This is not the case across the board and an important consideration for how you expect to be treated as a student here.

Are MD/MPH and MD put into different "pools"? Meaning, is there a specific number of MD/MPH acceptances they plan on giving out, and a different number of MD acceptances?

So we are only considered for the MD/MPH applicant pool if you applied MD/MPH? Someone posted earlier in this thread that they applied MSTP and was rejected and concurrently “forwarded” to the MD-only pool. Does that not apply for MD/MPH? I could’ve misunderstood their post too lol

Someone during my orientation asked this question and the admissions staff member said that you can potentially be forwarded for MD-only if you fit into one of the other mission categories. The admission staff will reach out if this is the case. If the only mission category you are in is MD/MPH and you are rejected, then it seems that you are not able to be considered for MD only. Hope this helps!

Yes, this helps so much!! This cleared up a lot of my questions concerning the way they look at apps, thank you so much!

You are considered for MD if you don't make the cut for the MD/PhD program but there are absolutely a set number of MD/PhD acceptances that are given out, and a set number of MD acceptances they are going to award - these don't fluctuate.

As someone replied above though - if you are a MD/PhD applicant with no other mission based check-boxes, your odds of being considered for MD alone are basically the same as OOS (not great)

I think I read on this thread a while ago that there are around 14 MD/MPH spots

QUESTION:
(I am applying next cycle)
- I did psychology research on immigrants with type 2 diabetes.
-Does OHSU have a preference for biomedical research or is all research good? I found this on their page: "
Candidates for admission are considered comparatively on the basis of:
  • Understanding and appreciation of health care issues and/ or biomedical research
- What did you guys do for research?

Sorry if this is an obnoxious request, but would someone please post the OHSU portal link in here? My computer had craaaaaaazy issues and lost most of my emails and saved stuff 🙁
I would super appreciate it.

I'm not sure if OHSU has a preference for biomedical research, but, personally, I wouldn't fret about this. The meaning of biomedical research is quite broad, and they just say "understanding and appreciation...of biomedical research." I think our premedical courses help us do that already. Your research seems incredibly important and impactful and I really feel like it's less about what kind of research you do, and more about what you get out of your research experience. I've always done basic research and during my interview, the only questions they asked about my research were things like, "tell me about some of the challenges you faced in a research setting" and "what kinds of research are you interested in doing at OHSU." Good luck next cycle!

Hey y'all, for those who have interviewed did you ever find the "box" in your portal to be checked after reviewing the Statement of Confidentiality? Never found it...or do we just email the interview coordinator back with the signed form even though that's not what they said to do?
Please and thank ya for your help!!

Yeah so I was in a similar spot. I emailed Kari and she said that once a “decision” is made post-interview (hold fam where you at) that the attachment is no longer available. She had me email her a verbal confirmation as an alternative (months after my interview and she didn’t seem concerned at all). Hope this helps!

I am interviewing for MD/MPH. I am not sure if it is the same for the MD interviews, but we have a whole day of orientation from 9:30-1:30pm. Does anyone know what happens during the orientation and if we should dress up? The email says we do not need to dress up and admissions will be in business casual attire. Thanks!

I have a 9:30-1:30pm orientation (I'm interviewing MD) and I'm going to dress business casual (like a non-collared shirt that is nice) 🙂

Did your portal say "hold" for you?

zoom presentations on curriculum, diversity, and a review of the process from the assistant dean of admissions. After that, there are break out rooms for Q&A sessions with current students. It's pretty laid back, I would keep it business casual and cleaned up (look good, but save your tie for the interview kind of thing)

Also, during my orientation there were also a couple MD/MPH candidates, so I think we all go through the same orientation process.

I am about to graduate from an Oregon university but I have residency in Nevada! I have a LM of 67 and I was complete in late October!! 🙂 This is my dream school so I am over the moon.
Whoa so crazy... I grew up in Oregon and went to OSU, however now I live in Nevada, so I have residency in NV not OR. My LM score is also 67, and I got an interview invitation the same day you did.... What are the chances LOL. Good luck crispywavefern, we got his!

That is so amazing!! The chances are so low, especially with Nevada being such a weird state haha. I hope to meet you on the fun Orientation day pre-interview 🙂 Woohoo!

The School of Medicine gives strong preference to the following applicants:
  • Residents of Oregon.
  • Non-resident applicants with Oregon Heritage. The School of Medicine uses the Oregon Heritage Policy for student selection, but it is not used as a basis for determining residency, and therefore the tuition a student pays. Oregon Heritage is defined as 1) A student with one or both parents residing in Oregon at the time of application, 2) A student who graduated from high school in Oregon with at least two years of attendance at a high school in Oregon, or 3) A student who graduated from any regionally accredited college or university in Oregon and attended at least two years at any regionally accredited college or university in Oregon no more than 7 years prior to the time of application.

How far out are the interview dates? Thank you and congrats!! 😊

Yeah it says Hold and the date placed on Hold. I Interviewed early November and took about 9 weeks for the update.
Got it. I no longer have the attachment available but no hold decision either. Didn't know if it was a pre-hold before the hold lol.

That's what I'm banking on! 🙂

Anyone have any input on how many spots are left for those interviewing early March? Are interviews this late basically for wait-list/alternate spots? I'm assuming they have rolling admissions and most spots have already been offered.
