2020-2021 Rush

Just got a random email from Rush saying that they appreciate me applying and encourage me to complete the secondary so they can review my app. Got secondary like 2.5 weeks ago. I have LizzyM 67 and I'm URM. Should I take the email with a grain of salt? Im interested in Rush and Chicago but I have 4 y/o and fiance that Im afraid to take somewhere they wont enjoy. If any applicants or students can comment on those things, that would be nice.

definitely you should apply, I am several years out and definitely love our class. very few are from undergrad. most have gap years.

If you have high community service AND clinical experience hours (1,000-2,000 hours for each; check the Rush Admission page to see their crazy high averages for service and clinical hours) then I would definitely submit it! Rush really likes non-traditional apps, but particularly non-trad applicants with significant clinical AND service experiences that will enrich the class and your practice of medicine.

However, I definitely understand how having a family impacts how you evaluate the right school for you. I would ask yourself this question: if Rush was my only acceptance, would I attend next Fall or would I wait and apply another year to find a program closer to home/in a city that fits my entire family more? Finding the right program for you is always the most important factor in choosing a medical school, and I think sometimes we forget that as pre-med students. If Chicago/Rush don't feel like the right fit for you, then trust that instinct and don't apply — or submit the secondary, and re-evaluate if you still want to attend if you receive an II. That will buy you more time to learn about the program and community and if it's a good fit for your family. I would imagine with a high number of non-trad students, many have families and Rush likely has programs/cultures that support student-parents.

This is a nice suggestion. I think I'm going to find time to fill out their secondary, and learn more about the program and community while waiting for a potential II. To answer your question, if this was my only acceptance, I'd absolutely take it.

I went to undergrad very close to Rush and for what it's worth, I love the community. A lot of young, working families. Tons of parks for kids, walking distance to grocery stores, plenty of coffee shops, and several schools very close by. I wouldn't be fearful of your S/O and kid not liking the area! I love it so much I want to go right back.

This is convincing. Sounds exactly like the type of community I want to be in.
Also, SDN has a lot of value when it comes to this stuff. Couldn't really have gotten this info so quickly w/o it.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any more questions about the area and I'd love to fill you in!

I interviewed last week! The vibe the whole day was very relaxed overall thanks to the friendly faculty and student ambassadors. My first interview was very conversational and my second felt more like an interview with various kinds of questions.

For the pre-interview social hour, is it casual dress? I’m guessing so but wanted other opinions.

to those who interviewed already, anything to prep for besides why medicine, why us, and knowing your application well? any surprising questions? was the situational interview like MMI? if so, how did you prep? I've never done an MMI interview before. also, did you get your interviewers names beforehand? any feedback is appreciated!
nda .... ...

Complete mid-August, received an II on 10/2, attended interview recently (won't reveal exact date for privacy reasons). RIP me for tragically messing up my answer to an important question -- just send me the R now Rush, I understand lol.

Anyway, if you check your schedule in Thalamus (under the "Schedule" tab) you may be able to see your interviewers? I didn't check the day before so I can't confirm, but if anything, it might show up there. While there's an NDA out, I think I can safely say it's an overall chill day. The situational interview is literally a situational interview, not very MMI-like. The only reason I crashed and burned here was because I was nervous/blanking, not because it was difficult or insane.

Edit: Pre-interview social is super casual and fun. I recommend going if you can.

Lol if I didn’t get a “we are still reviewing” email does that mean they’re done reviewing me
I'm not sure, they were pretty vague about what they were trying to say. To anyone who is curious about what the email said:

"At this time, I am writing to update you on the status of your application. The Admissions Selection Committee is working diligently to review applications and determine which applicants will receive an interview invitation. As previously mentioned, this process can take several weeks, as each application is personally read by a member on the Committee. Please rest assured that your application is still under consideration. While we understand that this may be a stressful period, we greatly appreciate your patience. "

I also got this email ... I have absolutely no idea what to make of it... the subject says: status update then there was no change in my status lol? Does this basically mean "on hold for re-review"?
