2020-2021 Sam Houston State University - College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Current student here. I'm not sure whether SHSUCOM follows the 90% rule but like the person above said they highly prefer students who want to serve rural TX. Out of the 75 in our current class, not more than 2 or 3 are OOS, and they are from states neighboring Texas. So just keep in mind if you can see yourself practicing in Texas in the future and if your application reflects that when you decide whether or not to apply!
I didn`t realize there were only 75 students in the first class.

Did they release any current student MCAT/ GPA stats yet? What do you think the numbers are hovering at?

Sorry, they haven't released any data to us yet. I really have no idea what the averages are.

Has anyone heard about when they’ll send IIs?
They said in the courage session they are currently working through some technical issues but they were aiming to send out interviews late August, so I am guessing they are running behind...other than that not sure when they will be sending those out.

What is the likelihood they have sent out invites but no one on SDN has received one?
I don't know... I think we're the most neurotic and most "on top of it" students and are more likely to receive interviews than less informed applicants, who might have lower stats or fewer EC hours.

Does anyone know if the CASPer test is required before they can make a decision regarding interviewing?

Yes. I talked to admissions a couple of weeks ago and they informed me that they won't be reviewing applications until they have received all the materials (MCAT, eval letters, CASPer results...)

Also, a note about CASPer's "we will send your results in 2-3 weeks" comment, my results were sent about a week and a half later so take their estimate with a grain of salt.

Has anyone attended the informational sessions they're offering with tours? Did they address if they sent out interviews in it by any chance?

Just got a rejection email! Hmmm wonder if it’s my Casper score.

Edit: Complete 6/12. Lower LM ~65, unbalanced MCAT, live in East Texas, no DO shadowing if this helps anyone.

Just got rejected, good luck everyone else!

I was complete August 6th

cGPA 3.6, MCAT 507, in-state, over-represented in medicine if that all means anything

Damn you're above average based on what was posted here a few days ago. Best of luck to you in your other apps!

Also wondering if you guys got your emails at the same time or if they are staggering them. I haven't gotten one yet and I have similar stats.

Thank you! On the bright side I've been invited to interview at 3 other DO schools so I'm not too worked up. And besides I turned this app in 1.5 months after they invited me to write the secondary so they may not have taken it too kindly. Anyways best of luck to everyone else here I hope some of y'all get interviews from here!

II just received! However, I'm having issues registering. When I click on the link in my portal it signs me out. Is anyone else having this issue?

Low GPA, just got the R sadly. In-state, 3.0sGPA, 3.3cGPA, T-20 undergrad, 519 MCAT URM. Good luck to everyone else though, and congrats to those that have gotten IIs 🙂

Congrats! When were you complete 🙂

Just got rejected. In-state, ORM, GPA 3.85, MCAT 510. First rejection so I'm really bummed out. Good luck to everyone else!

Got an II yesterday!

Complete sometime in July, 515 MCAT, 3.71 GPA + 4.0 in grad school. The interview is for next Friday the 25th, which is super soon, so it looks like they've just started giving interviews. I'm from the north Houston area so I'm excited. Also a reapplicant from 2018 who heavily improved their application (retook MCAT, great Masters program, reworked essays, crazy amounts of clinical experience).

The Texas interview timelines are so different. I got an II to one of the UT schools at the beginning of August, and the earliest date was early October. Looks like other UT schools are still scheduling for late September so it seems all over the place.

Got an II today! secondary submitted 7/26. IS, URM, uGPA 3.12 gGPA 3.75 MCAT 506 with lots of extracurriculars, service and clinical hours

Did you figure this out? I had the same problem for a few minutes before I logged out, shut the browser completely, logged back in and then the scheduling appeared when I re-clicked the Interview button on the left-hand panel. Hope this helps if you hadn't already figured it out!

II complete mid June lm 75. Excited to learn more about this new school!

II as well! complete 6/30.

in a dilemma though.. not sure if i should attend since i’ve already received an acceptance to a more established and cheaper DO school. any thoughts/advice?
