2020-2021 Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm glad they are willing to do that. Honestly that is something I noticed about USUHS when I went there last year. They all seemed somewhat like a family. One student even just approached me and a friend and talked to us for like 30 minutes encouraging us which she did not have to do.

So do we have to email out admissions counselors now or after the interview to talk to current students? Nevermind you answered the question above.

Okay, so apparently they are working on making an official virtual tour that will be sent to interviewees. There won’t be a live one or anything, but they are working on one that can be sent.

And there are a lot of students who would be willing to chat, so if you get an interview and want to hear from us, definitely reach out when they give you that info.

How long did it take for everyone to recieve secondaries, I submitted 6 days ago and havent heard anything back yet.

Did anyone else get an email from Mr. Ruiz to call him regarding a preliminary medical review?
I'm on the West Coast and just saw the email. Calling tomorrow.

@Matthew9Thirtyfive

When do the fitness standards (i.e. weight limit) need to be met? Do they need to be met at the DoDMETs physical or does this happen later?

If I don't meet the weight goal before the physical (I currently meet the weight requirement for Navy and Air Force, but not the Army), would I have time to do another weigh-in later or would I end up only being able to go into the Navy or Air Force?

I think that there was mention that fitness tests won't be taken until OCS and not during the actual physical examination. Not too sure about the second question but I'm pretty sure that you should be in the green if you pass the tape test.

They will do height and weight during the physical. You need to meet the requirements for the service you apply for. I actually am not sure what happens if you don’t meet standards for one but meet it for your second or third choice.

If you meet the standards for the Navy, then you’re very close to the Army as they are fairly similar. See if you can drop a few pounds prior to the physical. If you don’t meet the weight, you will be tested based on body fat percentage using the Army standards.

FYI for those interested in learning more about the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS), here are some links to explore. This is not a comprehensive list or an officially endorsed list, just some websites and videos I personally think may be informative. Information in these links, particularly the non-.gov links, may be out-of-date or inaccurate. This post and the websites linked do not necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the US Public Health Service, Department of Health and Human Services, or US government.

USPHS general info:

USPHS Medical Officer specific info:
Since the Indian Health Service (IHS) is currently the only agency sponsoring PHS medical students, I'm also including the following IHS-focused links (PHS officers are assigned to different agencies throughout the federal government, and have a dual role of serving the "big PHS" mission and the mission of the specific agency they are assigned to):

USU-IHS specific info:
General IHS physician info:

Does anyone know if you have to complete another, separate physical exam for the DoDMERB portion of the USUHS application process, if you've recently (past few months) completed a commissioning physical for HPSP? I received an approval letter in July from a Med Corps Officer at my branch's recruiting command for "PHYSICAL QUALIFICATION FOR APPOINTMENT/COMMISSIONING". Am I going to have to do the whole process over again? Not upset if I have to, just wondering if anyone here knows or has already asked this question.

From what I've been told by my HPSP Recruiter, the HPSP utilizes MEPS as the medical screen. This is entirely separate from the DoDMERB Screening. So I have been planning on having to do both. I am not sure if this is 100% true.

I was told I’d have to complete a separate physical even though I just finished my HPSP physical

Thanks for the info and quick reply!

I'll be there next week too - I think we schedule the day with our counselor.

Oh weird. We definitely got a specific day for the student panel.

@Matthew9Thirtyfive any info for us II-less people :/

Just to be patient. Things will probably be looking different this year. Not getting an interview invite for the first batch doesn’t mean you’re not a top applicant.

Question: I am having a hard time getting my clinical LOR (I worked per diem throughout college but my only "supervisor" was the hospital's VP of nursing). Would it completely sink my app to not be able to submit one? I have still not been able to get ahold of her.

First, congratulation to everyone that received an II! That is awesome and really happy for y'all.

Wanted to get some opinions/clarity around the weight reqs at the mandatory physical. If you receive an interview invite, how soon do you have to schedule and complete the physical? Usually, I am not concerned about weight requirements, but I just recovered from a severe ankle injury and am not at my normal fitness level (Pre-injury, I would pass). For me, I know it will be measured by body fat percentage due to my build, but I am worried I won't have enough time to get below the max standard allowed.

Follow up question: if you do not meet the weight req. at the physical, do you get a second chance at it? Thanks to anyone for their input, and again congrats to those who got IIs today!

You can get an interview prior to your physical. It has to be done before you can get an unconditional acceptance, and it has to be done by March if you haven't gotten accepted before then, or you might be removed from consideration.

Ok, so it is possible to interview first, then do the physical afterward. Thank you for clarifying that, I had misunderstood prior mentions of this in that we do the physical at the same time as the interview.

What about if you took the physical and eye exam a few months ago because I was interviewed last cycle? Would you need to retake it?

I'm betting you'd have to redo it, but you could always contact the commissioning coordinator and ask.

The physical and eye exam are set up completely separately from the interview. You'll get assigned an optometrist and a physician through DoDMETS.

Edit: just to be clear, I believe you have to have the physical scheduled before the interview, but you can have it scheduled for after.
