If accepted, does USU tell you which branch they're holding a spot for you in? If not, when does that usually happen? Also, is it possible to hold a spot in the class one branch and stay on a waitlist for others that you'd prefer?
When you get the acceptance call, they will explicitly say which branch you got into (based on reading previous threads).

Is anyone having issues applying to HPSP and USUHS? My HPSP recruiter found out that I applied to USUHS and got very upset.

Mine was upset too... I told him that if I get my top choice (USUHS), I won’t be taking the scholarship. It’s unfortunate because he won’t get credit for recruiting me and he will have wasted a lot of time compiling my application, but I’ll still be joining the military [emoji2371]

Do we start reaching out to HSPS right now? HMM.... I definitely want to do the military route, just not sure when to start the HSPS application

I’m not sure when the “”correct” time to start is, but I first spoke to a recruiter in august and my application was complete last week. So the sooner the better, it took a long time for me

Mine was supportive and said if I get into USUHS, he completely understands taking that over the HPSP
Same here. My recruiter said he would want me to choose USUHS over HPSP if I got in.

BTW, does anyone know why we have to do a physical exam again for HPSP if we already did one for USUHS? Don't they all go to DoDMERB anyway?

You have to go to MEPS for HPSP so you have to do it again since it's a separate thing

😀

this is not true. Military is just awful with communication and checking the boxes. I had to do both physical exams, in which they were pretty much the same. I called 5 different people to see if my qualification from HPSP could roll over to USUHS. I finally got an answer saying that I could... 2 weeks after I finished the HPSP physical lol. Just have to roll with it.

I asked several people about using one physical for both and was repeatedly told I couldn’t. I did both, and they were actually quite different...

I got my letter today saying that I was qualified. Does that mean I received the “conditional acceptance”? Or is that a whole separate acceptance? I remember hearing that there are conditional and unconditional acceptances. One being qualified medically and the other actually coming from the admissions committee.

I’m assuming that means medically qualified. They aren’t allowed to send A’s until 10/15 due to AAMC traffic rules

hmmm that’s interesting! I’m not sure then lol I got an email from the commissioning office from the Navy telling me I didn’t need to do it again a few weeks after I asked, but went ahead and did it because I didn’t want to fall behind.

I was told from someone familiar with the process that for whatever reason the recruiters for HPSP are penalized if you get so far along in the process and then don't sign with them. It might be branch specific though

That's what my recruiter told me as well. It sucks that they're the ones who get penalized. I get that they want people to join because recruiting is their job, but why is it so bad if someone chooses a different branch or goes to USUHS instead? If the applicant ends up in the military, haven't they achieved their goal?

A few days ago, I got promoted in the Army. Would it be worthwhile to send an update letter for this? I have the official order that I can attach to the email. I felt iffy about this because people don't normally update their med school with a job promotion, so I wanted your thoughts. Thank you!
Congrats! Curious about this too. I'm in a similar situation.

I saw in an article, USUHS claims a 91% first choice match. "Overall this year, 91 percent of the class matched to their first choice specialty" USU Celebrates First Residency ‘Match Day’

in civilian match, 2019 had a 46% first choice and a 15% second choice match (i got this from the raw data-i'm pretty confident in this). Can anyone confirm if USUHS really has that good of a match rate? I heard mixed reviews where some people claim it's way worse, but it seems it is literally almost 2x better

USUHS is different than the civilian world. We go through the military match first and are legally and contractually guaranteed a military PGY1 spot at least. So right off the bat, there is basically no chance of not matching.

Second, the numbers of how many spots there are per service, and our student body is pretty good at self selecting into the fields they are a good fit for.

Third, we all basically make similar amounts of money regardless of specialty, so there isn’t as much incentive for everyone to chase the high paying specialties.

I think all of that combine to make a perfect storm of people generally getting what they want.

I interviewed here on 9/23, so I still have 1-3 weeks of waiting left... but I'm still so anxious for tomorrow. Can't wait to start seeing people post here about getting A's! Best of luck to everyone!

In the exact same boat. All y'all getting A's tomorrow better post on here so @washhyyy and I can bathe in the second hand joy/tension release.

I interviewed at the end of September and heard something back in November. But I had a few really slow committee members. People who interviewed in the beginning of October heard before me.

Yeah that’s about what I’m expecting! They said 4-6 weeks for people who interview in September so I’m hoping for late October - mid November! I’m just excited for the A’s to start rolling (even if they aren’t for me yet)

Your recruiter needs to get over it. Not your problem. Don't let them guilt trip you for being smart and pursuing parallel options. As someone who is currently active duty, I have no sympathy for recruiters haha. I happen to have a good relationship with my recruiter for HSCP, but I was upfront and told her I was pursuing both options and she couldn't dissuade me from keeping my options open during such a competitive application process.

Purely speculation, but I think if the promotion means you are taking on additional leadership roles or actually adds value to your application I'd update them. If you went from an E1 to an E2, probably not.

Congrats on your advancement!

I would let them know. Promoting in the military is different than just a regular civilian job.

Nope, the day is still young, and I won't complain!

Oh yeah, I’m just asking cause my year they called everyone so it took a couple days for all the first acceptances to go out. I’m wondering if they just sent out all the emails already or if they are still sending them out individually like calls. (I have a friend waiting to hear lol)

Anyway, congrats! Which branch did you select?

I don't think they assign you a branch until the unconditional acceptance. But I indicated Army/Navy as my first choice and everything else as equally ranked second choices. I need to get a gym membership for the new Army physical now.

Whatever your first choice was, unless you heard differently that’s what you got. They fill up the class by branch. So if you listed army as your top choice, then you’re going to be in the army since the class is wide open still. And I don’t mean the thing where you check commitment level—I mean whatever branch you wrote in the box that says “first choice.”

Thank you! Yeah, I'm an NCO, but I gotta admit I love seeing the fuzzies turning into mosquito wings.

If you do not mind me asking, why did you choose army / navy as your top choices?

I also interviewed that first week and haven't heard anything... is it pretty safe to think I was rejected?

I interviewed the first week and haven't heard anything yet, but I definitely don't think that means rejection! It's still super early in the day and cycle. I'm sure you'll get some good news soon!

Absolutely not. My classmate interviewed in the third week and got accepted in May.
Oh that makes me so nervous to hear that. Were they told they were on hold or anything? Or was it radio silence from the day of the interview until May?
