Wow like they waited 7-8 months for a decision or were they waitlisted first lol?
Oh that makes me so nervous to hear that. Were they told they were on hold or anything? Or was it radio silence from the day of the interview until May?

They heard something like in December but it was an alternate list spot, and then they got accepted in May.

Has anyone applied/interviewed with PHS as their top choice? I'd love to get in touch!

II just now! pleasantly surprised - I received dates for next week.

Whoa... so you got an invite today for interviews next week? Yikes aren't the forms to fill out pre-interview really long?

Looks like the timeline this year is really interesting

For the lucky ones who have interviewed, did the interviews feel highly service-oriented? Or were they pretty similar to civilian med school interviews with mild military service emphasis?

Civilian hoping to go Navy here. I submitted 8/30 (a little late on the verification end), so I'm getting excited that I could hear soon!

Mine was pretty late to get a "complete" email also. Hang in there! Hooyah Navy 🙂

Congrats! I received an invite to interview the week following the II too. They were pretty understanding that certain things won't be complete like the medical physical stuff, as long as you fill out that interview form. Good luck!

Both of my interviews genuinely felt like they were 1) trying to get a feel for my character traits and decision making, 2) trying to get a feel for why military and why medicine, and 3) whether I really understand what I'm trying to get myself into. They wanted reflection on my experiences much more than they wanted a rendition of my community service. They really tried to get to know you as a person rather than see if you check all the boxes.

I was wondering if anyone could talk about if budget cuts are still currently a concern for USUHS? I recently just saw some articles about the possible closing of USUHS last year and was wondering if this is a legitimate concern moving forward. I would greatly appreciate any insight people might have!

No. I’ve posted a few times on why not.

Thanks! That's really helpful. I'm probably jumping the gun a little bit, but I want to get in the right headspace just in case!

I know all USUHS students are O-1 while in school. But with regards to pay, do USUHS students with previous commissioned active duty service get paid as O-1 with however many years of service they have accumulated? Or, do they get paid at their previous pay grade if it was higher than O-1?

Save pay means you have the rank of an O-1, but you get paid at the rank you previously held. Some people have had some issues with it and had to get it fixed, but that is how it is supposed to work.

Yes, the Save Pay Provision is part of federal law and can be found here [paragraph b(2)]: 10 U.S. Code § 2114 - Students: selection; status; obligation
Just to add on to what @Matthew9Thirtyfive said, specifically your basic pay will stay the same as your prior commission (rank+years of service), but your BAH will go down to that of an O-1. You also continue to receive service-wide annual basic pay increases. Also note that after graduation, where we are bumped up to O-3s right away, if your basic pay from your previous commission was higher than that of an O-3, you still continue to receive your higher salary (there's a few prior O-4s in our class).

For those of y’all that already interviewed, when did you hear from your interviewers to schedule a time?

One interviewer emailed me on Sunday before my interview week and proposed a time on Wednesday (so 3 days in advance). The other contacted me on Tuesday afternoon and asked about Wednesday as well. I think it’s pretty hit or miss, depending on your specific interviewers

Thank you! I just heard form one yesterday about a time on Wednesday.

My fellow Week of Sept 21 interviewees, how optimistic/delusional we feelin about hearing back this week?
I am trying to be optimistic. But it is definitely anxiously optimistic--hoping for the best, expecting the worst

Week of September 14th here, still no word yet. My branch preference was Air Force.

Looking at MSAR data, would it be fair to say ~275 acceptances are given out? Usuhs takes ~175 per class and MSAR reports 100 acceptances come from the waitlist. Am I interpreting this correctly or just stretching here

USU's class size seems to be 171 students, so 71 students come straight from interview results while another 100 are waitlisted first. The total number of acceptances probably varies because there are a lot of factors at play (e.g. some people will choose to go elsewhere or do something else).

Edit: I have no clue what I was talking about. USU gives out 275 acceptances but the class size is locked at around 171-172.

No, look at the post above this. The document states they send around 275 acceptances in total. They only give A’s when a seat is available, so they initially accepted 175 then sent out 100 more to people on the WL.

Following up on your post, maybe someone from USUHS can clarify. USUHS is different from other medical schools in that they only get funded for a specific amount of spots (around 172), if there are additional students then they need to get congressional approval for more funding which they never do. So the class size is locked based on that. That's why they have the initial acceptances then a long waitlist.

Essentially. Once the class fills up, many people who would have gotten an acceptance will get a waitlist spot, which means you have been accepted but will only get a conditional acceptance once a seat opens, as the school cannot overbook so to speak.

However, if the committee really loves you, and you are scored very highly, you can still get a straight up acceptance even after the class fills up. There are always a few spots opening as people are disqualified or withdraw, and they will just stick you into one as soon as that happens.

So for everyone still waiting to hear or who ends up interviewing in November and beyond, just remember that you are not interviewing for a waitlist spot. You are still interviewing for an acceptance.

Just got an email to attend and information session by CAPT Santiago held at night. They say its the same as the one he usually does in the morning which is great for me cause I work full time and have not been able to attend any of their online sessions.

Just got the same email! I’m sure it went to everyone but it’s hard not to read into it lol can’t wait to join the session though!

Dr. Santiago is awesome. He gave a super cool talk a few weeks ago on race in medicine and how colorblindness and pretending we are all the same is harming patients, but how it's a balance because there are also instances where including race in certain algorithms is harming patients too.
