Submitted Secondary. Did my EMT rotations at major DT area but not considering it as "clinical"

Does U of H review your application before sending you a secondary?

Yes, it's supposed to be a mission-based screen. I'm not sure if it is a GPA/MCAT screen as well, but I think it was more holistic.

Frankly, I would be shocked if it's really a mission-based screen. I have almost no connection to their mission through my ec's and received a secondary

I dont think its a GPA/MCAT screen... mine aren't the best but I just received a secondary as well

Received secondary today. TMDSAS transmitted 7/6.

Indicate all of the following statements that apply to you:
I have prior experience in a primary care clinic
I have prior experience in a rural medical clinic
I have prior experience in an inner city medical clinic
I have prior experience in a medical practice for an underserved area
I have prior experience in community or public health
I had access to premedical support for my preparation and/or application to medical school (advising, mentorship, premedical committee)

Is it bad if few/none of these apply to me? Does "experience" include shadowing?

What would classify as an inner-city medical clinic? Does a hospital located five minutes away from the center of a large city count?

For the first secondary question where it says, "if yes, explain?" what are we exactly supposed to explain? I have checked few of the options and there would definitely not be enough space to explain all.

woops, i thought the "if yes, explain" part was only for the last option. that's the only one i explained.

r.i.p.

omg no I thought it was just for the last one too! I thought it was strange that we had to explain that one out of all of the options

Only after I clicked the last one did I actually get the prompt that says "If yes, explain"... I think that means I just had to explain the last one bc it didn't show up for anything else.

Yes I also realized that and only provided explanation for that last one. Good luck!

Does anyone have the link to the 2019-2020 SDN discussion for this school? I can't find it in the list.

Here you go:

Remember last year was their first year taking applicants, they had no secondary last year and were only taking applicants who already had a TMDSAS up and running in the system. Oh yeah, also about the time they started interviews there was a mondo tropical storm affecting Houston & Galveston. They got through it all & I hope this year will be a smooth one for them!

Hey y'all, I know the data about last year's class is very limited, but does anyone have any data on their average accepted or matriculated MCAT or GPA? Thanks 🙂

With 100% of last year's matriculants being Texas residents, is it worth applying as an OOS student?

If you wish to live/practice in E Texas/ W Louisiana maybe. Because of the very short app cycle last year they only got applicants who were already complete on TMDSAS

My TMDSAS app has been verified and transmitted. But my MCAT is still pending (taking it soon).
No secondary yet. Are they waiting till my entire app is completed before sending a secondary?

I'm OOS and no MCAT. I got my secondary recently.

Can someone share how they approached responding to the secondary application prompt? I guess I'm asking how did you tie your experiences in with the U of H mission: to improve the health and health care population of greater houston and beyond. I was thinking of just talking about how my experiences demonstrate my dedication to healthcare while touching on their RISE values.

It depends on what experiences you have. If you have no experiences that point towards their mission, you are going to have a harder time trying to convince them. UH focuses on a community-based approach to healthcare where they want to heal populations by partnering with organizations that can improve the community. Which of your experiences most aligns with this? I talked about how my experiences working in the inner-city allowed me to observe social determinants of health and how it ties in with the mission.

Since the prompt is worded as "most exemplifies," identify a single activity or experience from your TMDSAS application that really aligns with their mission (or most closely aligns with it if your experiences are less community- or service-based). With UH COM's short character limits, I think it's important to really stick to the popular "show and don't tell" approach. This approach will allow you to describe the activity in a manner that reflects their mission without having to waste characters by explicitly saying it does — you're able to answer both parts of the prompt at the same time. Plus since the question restricts your choices to those already included in your TMDSAS app, your primary should have described the activity enough where your secondary response is totally additive (doesn't repeat anything from your primary application's description of the same activity/experience).

Just got the secondary.
TMDSAS Application Submitted: June 7th
Application Transmitted: July 15th
LM Score: 73

What counts as experience in a primary care clinic? Would shadowing in a pediatric clinic count?

For the " Describe any employment, family or other obligations that impacted your education " question does it have to apply specifically to my education? For example I've had financial difficulties and deaths in the family that I've used for the hardship essays in other secondaries, but I don't think it has impacted my education specifically just my life in general

Does anyone know if the character count is with or without spaces?

My TMDSAS application has been transmitted 07/14. But, I still haven't received a secondary.
Will I be getting rejected pre-secondary? 🙁

Have your grades, letters, and MCAT been sent in already? I'm pretty sure UH screens their secondaries, but I don't think you should give up hope! It took about a month for me to get my secondary... So I would just be patient and stay hopeful! You got this!!!

I just took my MCAT last week. I am waiting for the results. So, I will send in the score when I receive them
Thank you for the nice words!

Would volunteering at a free clinic for the homeless be considered a public or community health experience?
