2020-2021 University of Pennsylvania

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
lmao same but i didn't even notice that not everyone was wearing a suit tbh I'm sure no one else did either

@RRabbit @salmanly are yall staying for these two optional things?

anyone else who interviewed did you stay for the diversity / chat sessions or take off

I stayed -- I enjoyed meeting the additional faculty at the diversity session and speaking with more students at the end. It is a long day for sure, but I think it's worth it since you're already dressed up.

Frequent lurker, infrequent poster here. I interviewed several weeks ago; thought one of the interviews was alright, the other was better, but nothing spectacular. Used all of my time, but don't know if I was very eloquent, though I responded to everything. Don't know if I should try to prepare myself for the R early - any advice based on their prior admission records?

Stats: 3.98 cGPA/3.98 sGPA/524/Schwartzman Scholar/Decent ECs
Better be packing that sunscreen bud...

In all seriousness, chill. With those stats you'll be fine

Anyone receive the free swag from Penn yet? Growing more curious as to what it'll look like

Hmm do you mind taking a screenshot of where you see a space to update? I do not see one on my portal.

I have it as well - I wonder if it's MD/PhD-specific though?

not my opinion as I’m just a lowly interviewee. But very interesting that r/residency hates Penn lol

I was complete on September 7th. Do you folks have an idea when I might hear back about anything ?
Penn emailed me that I should apply because of my MCAT..
Thank you everyone.
No one can tell if or when you may hear back. Mine was complete 8/2, complete silence!

I was curious if they announce rejections, pre II holds etc from someone familiar with the process here. But I appreciate you telling me about your experience friend 🙂
If you are able to search through last year or this year's thread and get some answers, pls post here. I am curious as well

News to me :sour: lol (I'm a Penn student)

But on another note, not to discredit their valid concerns but I have noticed particularly on reddit that posts with mention of "midlevel" or "nurse practitioner" generally sends the community into a seething rage lol
That thread is a hot mess. Most of those folks have no idea what they're talking about, just this irrational fear of "scope creep" (itself the inevitable consequence of physicians not choosing primary care in sufficient numbers, as well as expecting, rightfully or not, large reimbursements). And to think -- they'll be working with NPs, etc. at some point!

fyi penn kinda operates as a group of federated states under the title of a university. basically, one school/institute has no influence on what the others do. This midlevel thing is pushed by Penn nursing and the health econ institute, but the med school isn't endorsing this if people are concerned about that.

I don't see an issue with some added responsibility for NPs, nurse anesthetists, technologists, etc., especially in rural settings. Most concerns regarding QoC are unfounded, and, from the macro POV (cost), it's not indefensible.

On last years thread there was a lot of discontent from current students about admin. Was wondering if someone could follow up on this?
I was hesitant to give input since I'm not on MSG (med student government) and don't directly interact with higher up admin. Also, I'm only very sporadically on SDN so might not see replies. I'll give you my input as an average student: I have only seen the dean 2-3 times so far this year, for 5 minutes at orientation and then another 5 or so minutes at a townhall meetings for COVID practices. Basically, she hasn't really impacted my time here at all ahaha. Things are running smoothly here, as I would expect in general from any med school. A team of course reps (~6 or so students nominated by the student body) meet with admin every week and discuss concerns/things we like in the curriculum and they seem to have been quite responsive thus far, no major issues there. At the beginning (much earlier on, before classes started) there was some discontent among the student body because it felt like we were kept out of the loop and new decisions were being made suddenly (like changing anatomy to virtual). We voiced concerns early on and it seems to have worked out.
There was discontent about the graduation last year (9am for people on east coast was 6am for west coast), which sounds awful and people were mad. In a somewhat related note, this year as classes are all virtual after thanksgiving, they agreed to let all west coast students take tests 3 hours later than every else which was nice. So seems like they're willing to compromise. The microbio course this year is normal, just like the other courses. There was also concern about a well-loved admin's departure last year, I cant comment on that because I don't know this person.
Long story short, things seem to be working out here as you would expect from any other school. No major issues.
Also, tip: if you want to get the real inside look, connect with a student OUTSIDE school-scheduled activities and just ask about it. We won't bite and won't be offended you're considering other schools; we all did the same thing. This goes for pretty much any school, ahaha.

Has anyone sent an update letter directly to the admissions office (and uploaded to the portal)? Are they receptive to this?

Does anyone know if Perelman is receptive to post-interview letters of intent? A current student recommended that I send one a few days after the interview, but not sure why they said this or who to send it to or how to write one?

Unless this school has a tracker, no one can tell correctly, not even close, because each school has been different the cycle. Last cycle, a friend of mine with stellar stars got the first II in March and is attending a T20 now. Keep the faith, but if you have no II or A, prepare for the worst.

Yo when are they sending us the swag? I totally forgot to ask in the interview!

Good question! I'm not sure if anyone here has received it yet. I interviewed in early November and haven't gotten anything

i have a q about IS acceptance rates here...according to MSAR they interviewed 67 IS and 31 matriculated. Does that mean a relatively high IS post-ii acceptance rate or could it just be an anomaly

I have the 2018 data saved. There were 71 IS interviews and 28 of those matriculated.

Also, I may have missed during the interview, but did they mention would we would hear back by?
