Out of curiosity, when did those with hold for acceptance schedule their interview date?

Has anyone that was complete early July not moved out of subcommittee? The order they're reviewing apps is odd

Just got a II!

3.9X cGPA and sGPA, 52X MCAT, URM, 2nd quartile Ca$per, IS applicant

M.D. File Complete 7/18 ---> Member of Committee 7/19 ----> Subcommittee 8/18 -----> Admissions Committee 8/31 ------> File review complete 9/12 ----> Interview invite 9/17

has anyone interviewed yet and has any advice? this is my number 1 choice and I am really nervous!!!

VCU does MMI as I'm sure you know. At each station make sure you don't use up all the time answering your initial question so that they can ask you follow up questions. The interviewers are kind and wont make you feel nervous at all. Best of luck to you and the rest who got II's!

does being stuck on Member of Committee for 2 months mean I'm likely not going to get an interview?
Speculation like this is impossible. Lets remember its September, and they send out interviews through FEB. The last interview invite may be sent out a day or two before the last interview day in march. That is 6 months away, they've been sending interviews for about one month. I know we all want instant gratification but this cycle takes forever, and this is just the very beginning.

I’ve been wondering this too. It’s not the same as “radio silence” from the school insofar as there are some apps who have not even moved to a subcommittee. Makes me curious about how they stratify apps and it could be totally random that your app hasn’t moved to subcommittee. Last year’s threads may provide some insight if you’re really curious.

No lectures needed, please, from anyone who feels inclined to respond saying people need to have patience. 😉 Chatting with applicants about random things that others may be wondering too is no different to me than chatting with the people waiting in line near you for concert tix. It passes the time and sometimes helps people glean some insight in a long process (e.g. A “hold” at X school is not a soft R.)

They stratify apps in a million different ways. The assistant Dean of admissions used to come on this thread years ago. Because it is a state school there is definitely more of an emphasis on STATS but also service is really important to the school too. For example: reapplicants are usually reviewed pretty quickly, high stat applicants, those with stellar ECs for example. Because VCU Pre-Screens, it means if you have gotten a secondary you have gotten past at least one hurdle.

Theres unfortunately no way to know at VCU because they dont put people on hold Pre-II. It sucks - but until your file score review is complete you are kind of in limbo.

This person who has waited two months clearly has not been prioritized, but it doesn't mean they aren't in a pile they will get to eventually 🙂

Thank you, that was very helpful! 🙂 It’s interesting to learn about different schools and their methods.

I needed to be reminded of this, thank you!! I'm still submitting some pending secondaries after getting ~50 complete by around Labor Day and haven't heard anything but a single II hold, but I'm sure it'll be a while until I hear back

Just got the sub-committee without any notification today. I'm sure this was asked 10,000 times, but does everyone get a sub-committee status? I remember not getting it last year...

I can't answer your question, but I have a question for you! When were you complete/moved to member of committee review?

Honestly, the reason you dont remember it last year - is because this the first year people are focusing on the different statuses on the portal. Frankly, they dont really matter/mean anything. The assistant dean of admissions just means that the different statuses just mean your pile is being passed along in the limbo. They truly do not correlate to anything important.

THE ONLY status that actually means anything / matters pre II is the "Your file review is complete" status. That means you have reached the terminal stage of your file review and are eligible for an interview.

Everything else DOES NOT matter, and in the past 2 years of SDN we knew that. However apparently this year there is a renewed fascination.

Pre-meds...obsessing over something?
😛

Has anyone received a pre-II rejection yet? I’m not talking about the pre-secondary rejection that some people are receiving.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but what was the text that appeared when you guys moved past subcommittee review?

I'm just asking because I was stuck on subcommittee review for a good week or so but when I logged in, the changed to the following:

"Your M.D. file is now complete. The admissions committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

Please note that your file may be put on hold during the review process. Such reasons may include:

Hold for MCAT -- The Committee wishes to wait to evaluate your file until new MCAT scores are available. MCATs taken after September of the year of application will not be considered. If you are not planning to take or retake the MCAT, please contact our office immediately by email at [email protected]

Hold for Grades -- The file review done by the Committee has determined that you are engaged in coursework which may affect their decision about whether to invite you for an interview. It is imperative that you submit grades for current or proposed courses in a timely fashion. Any file on hold for grades that are not submitted by January 31st will automatically be rejected. If you did not take the course indicated on your primary or supplemental application, please notify us immediately by email at [email protected]"

Anyone know what this means? It almost sounds like I got moved back from subcommittee review to committee review?

No worries! This stuff gets lost. It is the last step before your file review is complete so
Member of the committee-> subcommittee-> admissions committee-> file review complete -> decision

Sorry to hear that. Was it after the “file review complete stage” or was it during an earlier stage? I’m trying to deduce if a long time lingering in a stage is a bad sign.
Its not wroth worrying about these things truly- it will only drive you insane. What stage youre in doesn't matter until you get to the file review complete stage. This kind of thinking - about when ur gonna be rejected- will only make you unhappy.... and there is truly no way to know.

Interviewed earlier in September, portal updated today to a hold for possible acceptance at a later date :/
This is a good thing!! They place everyone who doesn't fail the interview on this list for a possible acceptance on their acceptance notification dates (Oct 16th, etc). This is the best you can hope for at this time until they release decisions🙂 Congrats!!!

Oh! So this isn't a standard post-II hold then? I'm sure this was discussed in the thread and I missed it -- so thank you for taking the time to make me feel better 🙂

Nope they have a different procedure than other schools, everyone who has interviewed thus far has this notification if they made it through the previous reviews! And glad I could help!🙂

The VCU portal doesn't work on my phone and I can't access my laptop right now so all I have to go off is the email. On the chance that I also got the post interview hold you're describing (does anyone know if they are also sending post interview rejections?), do you have a source for these just being a shortlist for a possible acceptance later? I trust you but it would help my piece of mind immensely to know if it was 100% confirmed.

I checked last year's thread and what that commenter is saying checks out. Acceptances can't go out until Oct 15 anyway -- and per last year's thread, everyone who received a notification in September was either rejected or on this hold for acceptance/waitlist list. Also, someone posted this flowchart that makes sense too:

Application Screening —-> Sub-Committee Review —-> File Review —-> pool of applicants that may receive interview invite —-> Interview Invite —-> Selection Committee —-> hold for potential offer —-> Admissions Offer

Thank you so much! So the hold is basically a waitlist or acceptance if I understand it correctly

Kind of. From what I gather, you weren't outright rejected after the interview, so now you're either going to be accepted the next notification date (Oct 16) or pushed to the rest since they don't want to accept you right away. If you're not accepted even by the end of their four big acceptance release dates, you either are invited to the waitlist or not, and if you're not, it's an R

As the person above me said; no after 4 acceptance dates the waitlist formulated and people are rejected that don’t make the alternate list.

Hi all, apologies if this has been asked before.

A week ago my status was changed to: "Your File Review is now complete. If you are granted an interview, you will receive a status update on your applicant portal."

Looking over the thread it looks like this is the final stage before decision. How long do people wait here before being granted an interview (shortest, longest)? Also, would rejections come at this stage or later in the cycle?

Thank you!

I think some previous posts mentioned that it took about a week?

When I log in to the portal for some reason it still allows me to make changes to my app. But when I click on the Home Screen it says my file is complete. Anyone else have this issue?

So if you've already interviewed and don't get this notification (or any portal update at all) is that a cause for concern?

It probably depends on the date you interviewed, I interviewed quite early so that may impact the rate at which they’re going through apps post-II and get to yours

My application portal say "

An initial review of your file resulted in a decision to hold your application, awaiting grades from courses you are either currently enrolled in or which you indicated you would enroll shortly. Please submit your grades to the Admissions Office as soon as possible. After that time, you can check your status for any further action. Remember, all grades need to be submitted by January 31st for your application to be considered further."

I sent my primary on 9/23, does this mean I didnt pass a screen and they are manually reviewing my app?

I dont know what future grades they are talking about, so I can only assume its a soft R or a manual review.

I think they’re telling you to send them your grades
