Interviewed 10/19 first-tier waitlist. Is anyone else in the same boat? how many people get offered off the waitlist for MSUCOM?
I'm coming atcha as a current M1 who was waitlisted during both the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 application cycles. After I didn't get off the waitlist for 2020-2021, I met with an MSUCOM advisor who told me there was simply little to no waitlist movement that cycle (could have been pandemic-related). However, there was a TON of waitlist movement last cycle, and I am more inclined to guess this cycle will have similar waitlist movement.

I would suggest that during the waiting time; find other activities and other things to do while waiting so it won't be so unbearable. If you are a current senior in undergrad (like me), I would focus on successfully completing finals to pass the time. It helps, trust me.

What do you think would cause someone to be waitlisted rather than accepted?

You want my take? For MSU COM, it's the timing of your interview.

I interviewed (two cycles in a row) around April/May, and I genuinely don't think they had any or enough open seats to offer at that time, so I was at the mercy of the waitlist. For context, I submitted my application early both times, and I was a very appealing DO applicant. I suppose I just didn't stand out enough to be offered an interview right away.

Other than that, it could be anything, from not showcasing enough diversity/interest in diverse populations, not expressing enough interest in osteopathic medicine/MSU COM, or your stats (although I'm inclined to believe MSU COM doesn't weigh those as heavily as other schools)

I thought they usually screen for your stats BEFORE the interview and if you get the interview, stats are not used usually to determine acceptance or not as the interview performance is more or less solely weighed upon. right? I keep hearing both (that stats are used after interview or stats are used after interview).

I'm also an M1 and I do have a bit of a different take. My best guess is that if you received an interview, your stats/experience are acceptable. However, I do think that stats/experience give you more leeway with how you do on the interview, and having interviewed before winter break, I don't think a lack of spots is a problem. If you have above average stats/experience, having a meh interview ( not stand-out awesome, but not bombed) will get you accepted. If you have average stats/experience, having a meh interview may get you waitlisted or admitted, depends on your writing, interviewer eval, etc. If you have below average stats/experience, a meh interview may get you waitlisted or rejected. I do think they take the entire application into account when making final decisions, not just the interview. My personal opinion as well, but because MSUCOM's interviews are so laid back/unstructured, it can put you at a disadvantage of really making yourself shine.

Edited to add: MSUCOM does have one of the higher MCAT averages of all of the DO schools. They do care somewhat about stats.

From what I’ve been told by advisors and mentors is that your stats always matter throughout the entire application process. I’m not certain how MSUCOM reviews apps before interviews but typically the admissions committee has not even seen your application before your interview. Others have reviewed the basics and decided you meet criteria for an interview THEN after the interview, the admissions committee reviews your entire application including your stats and interview to make a holistic decision. If an area of your application is weak then that is likely why you were waitlisted rather than accepted, especially early on in the process and if you did not have something that really made you stand out to make up for the weak area.

For instance, my MCAT is in the mid-50X range, 3.7X cumulative and sGPA, which are pretty average overall for DO schools. However, I’m URM, non-traditional with >3000 clinical hours in the ICU, >1000 volunteer hours, >1000 research hours with a publication, graduate degree, and a unique story. I interviewed mid-October, interview went poorly and I was sure it was a waitlist but I was accepted 6 weeks later. My mentors and I have discussed it and feel my written application and “extracurriculars” carried me enough that the interview performance was overlooked. It’s only December though and being on the waitlist that early means you have a great chance of being accepted off of it especially since MSUCOM is a higher tier DO school. Many of those accepted may be accepted to MD later on and withdraw. Don’t lose hope!

How are my stats then with a 504 MCAT, 3.7 GPA, URM, a unique story, 500 Clinical hours, 100 shadowing outside of country (no DO though but doctor used regenerative medicine and methods akin to a DO. I have 150 hours of Research as well. And 100 of volunteering. I also felt my interview was a B or good.

Another thing to keep in mind with is with the AACOMAS traffic guidelines, students who were accepted prior to Nov 15 will have until Dec 14 to pay the deposit. Admissions may be dragging their feet until this date to see where they stand with previous admissions offers.

I echo this so much. My interview was so laidback and I can’t imagine it having a huge impact on the final decision. Instead, it felt more like a causal conversation to make sure there aren’t any red flags. Don’t forget there is Casper too.

Do yall think the people who got interviewed between 11/15 and 11/17 won’t hear back till after break?

Seems like they are waiting until next Thursday and Friday. Fingers crossed and prayers up to everybody waiting!
I made a quick sheet to see when post-II decisions have been coming out for this cycle and this is what i got:

I do know that typically MSUCOM accepts 70 to 75% of their applicants who received an interview whether it be a waitlist who got accepted or those who got accepted without having to be waitlisted and most of the people who did NOT get accepted have their interviews after January. This is according to last years' thread. And that chance is more significant the earlier one gets accepted to an interview. So far for those who got an answer and interviewed from August till now, there have been little waitlist/rejections in comparison to acceptances if you were to get interviewed earlier. Also, I did read on the MSUCOM website that the pre-admissions committee decides and screens you for BOTH before and after the interview. As such, I really think that if your stats are good enough to pass through an interview; one's interview performance is more heavily weighed upon than stats. As such, if only 3% of those got an interview and they select 75% of those interviewed, one probably has good stats from school's end if you gotten an interview. I hope this gives comfort to those who interviewed and are waiting back. tl;dr, if you have been interviewed thus far and based on historical trends, you are more likely than not, I think, to get accepted either through WL Tier 1 or an A. That's my take.

Great analysis! How do you know they accept 70% of interviewed applicants?

Here is an excel sheet of an example of the 2018 application cycle for MSUCOM. Scroll down to MSUCOM and see how many people get interviewed vs how many admitted. It shows around 70 to 75%. However, this is a few years ago so it may fluctuate slightly. However, schools usually are consistent with the percent they take in so it should be around that 70 to 75% margin.

It shows for this cycle, if you are In-state, 961 applied, 458 got interviewed and 354 got accepted so that is 77.29% for IS. For Out of State, 4548 OOS applicants applied, 153 received an interview invite where 115 of them got accepted. They don't take many OOS applicants. However, as a Colorado resident, I was very fortunate, and quite shocked, to get an II for this school as an OOS especially with my lower than average MCAT of 504.

Also, keep in mind, this was data for a few years ago. In giving estimates such as percentages, you really can only go by past trends. Hearing from other comments from other forums and this data, it shows the post-interview acceptance rates are in the 70s in percent ranges. Based on prior data, it would logical to assume that it would be similar this year as schools are usually consistent with the percent they take in.

For those who were accepted, how long after your A call did it take for the email or portal update?

Another week is coming. I wish the next batch, of those who are going to get a decision for this week, good luck!

Looking back on the forum, they are just finishing up those who got interviewed in October. Hopefully November will come up shortly. I think there is still a good amount of spaces still open for November, so try not to worry too much! Good luck!

Bro you are too patient to be a premed… are you secretly an adcom?

Interviewed 10/19.
Rejected 12/5.

This path wasn't for me it seems. Best of luck to all of you in your future endeavors.
If you really want to do this, don't give up. Sounds like you had a tough cycle, so let me just say one thing. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a family of physicians, and all of them have their own story. My mom got into medical school right out of college, then had to repeat her first year because of burnout. My dad took 3 cycles before he got into one of his backup schools. My uncle had to redo his final year of residency because of some clerical error. I myself, had a horrible time in undergrad but made up for most of it in my post-grad years. It's a process, and you can only do it if you truly want to. Don't let a rejection take your dream from you.

Nah, I am trying to be patient because that's all you can do. There is no point in freaking out about it because there is nothing more you can do. You have already done everything you can if you get an interview. Whether your freak out or not will not change the outcome.

Does MSUCOM close for the break after this Friday?
yes they do. And they resume classes on the 9th. They have a 3 week break. Something tells me the November interview folks won't hear back until after the 9th of January. 🙁

Seems like they haven’t been interviewing in December so maybe they’re allocating more time to working on decisions?? Maybe some will hear back this Friday?

Interviewed on 11/15, we thinking that day could hear results this week😳😳

I interviewed on 11/17 and they said that it will take us longer to hear back than the usual time (which is 4-6 weeks) because of the Holidays. I don't think we will hear back before the new year.

"Those accepted prior to November 1 will have until December 1. Those accepted between November 1 and January 31 will have 30 days."

My guess is that we will hear one more round (praying they do both the weeks of October 30th and November 6th) before the break, but my predictions have never been right.

I thought the timeline was 3-4. Based on last years thread, almost everyone who interviewed in November heard back this week so I'm hoping for the same this year.
