2022-2023 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is truly a crapshoot! Top student at Baylor unable to match into ortho multiple years?? I sure hope they've landed somewhere by now and were able to move on. Had to be devastating.
People can aim for elite programs only and didnt apply broadly when they go to a school like Baylor and do well and miss their opportunity.

I tell you what... having now looked at a bunch of 2022 match lists for TX schools, and only counting the preliminary matches without a full attached residency program, looks like most schools have a few of these among their matches:

Foster = 3
UTMB = 15
Dell = 0
McGovern = 12
UTSW = 7
Baylor = 6
Lubbock = 6
Factoring class size, it would be the following percentages:

Foster: 3/117 = 2.56%
UTMB: 15/230 = 6.52%
Dell: 0/50 = 0%
McGovern: 12/240 = 5%
UTSW: 7/231 = 3.03%
Baylor: 6/185 = 3.24%
Lubbock: 6/180 = 3.33%

Assuming I did my T.Test correctly in google sheets, I got a p-value of 0.0004926661394 meaning that UTMB has a statistically significant problem that leads to higher rates of people needing to do surgery prelim years.

I can definitely imagine this happening, even at lower-ranked schools. Sometimes folks want surgery, for example, but are unwilling to live in certain areas, vastly limiting the number of programs they can apply to. I'm sure it's even worse trying to move out of a given state or region if you decide not to rank many local programs. Faculty support and advising during MS3 and MS4 seem like valuable resources to have at hand.

Do we think there are going to be more pre-matches sent out tomorrow? Or could they be using the on-campus preview days to get to know people better before sending out more

There's a podcast episode I enjoyed with a student from UTRGV who went through this and ended up matching into dermatology. Thought I'd share for anyone interested:

2021 had 8 preliminary out of 19 that were not matched.

Speaking of campus preview days, did anybody receive a conformation email after they signed up? I never got confirmation

Through all this talk about match from accepted applicants, anyone else without an A crawling out of their skin for tomorrow? 🤣
Are prematches expected tomorrow? Are they usually given chronologically based on interview date for UTMB or more random?

Do ya’ll think they will be sending out more interview invites?

Hard to say for sure. All we know is there has been only one day of prematches so far and those prematched were interviewed very early, almost all in July, August, or early September. No October interviewees prematched that day (that I know of). Last year it seemed like prematches went out every other Friday after the first wave until the end of January. That pattern did not hold up this year, at least through the first two weeks, but tomorrow will be one month from the first prematch date. This is all neurotic hocus pocus so make of it what you will. Good luck!
Indeed! I am expecting some tomorrow, even though I have no idea if they're coming.

Are they going to send an email out to all applicants pretty soon as well, or will we just get a rejection email Match day
Let me rephrase, they said “the admissions committee have now completed the review for all applications received for the 2023 entering class” so maybe there will be more interviews handed out, but they are definitely nearing the end.

No more interviews going out for UTMB, just received the email.
wow, they wrapped up their invitation trail about 3 weeks earlier than last year.
(edited because @TeamTexas edited the wording on their post)
it's an odd wording for an email, nonetheless.

The wording initially made it seem like interviews were over, but after thinking about it, maybe they still have a handful of candidates they have reserved and will be inviting in the near future.

Did a lot of OOS applicants with high stats get s pre-II R? Anyone know/had that experience?

are they sending out pre-II R to in state applicants now as well ?

Looks like it.
I take this to mean, based on the email they sent out today that they have read all of this year's applications, that UTMB has decided who made the cut for an interview and who did not.

Can we hear from people who have applied, did not receive a II and did not receive todays letter.
I was complete end of September but I haven't received an pre-II rejection email (fingers crossed). I don't want to jinx it.

Application completed 6/25. Have not received an II as of yet and did not receive the pre-II R today either. In-state applicant. Wondering if this is a good sign or not.
I’m in the same boat as well, are they going to be sending out these rejections in waves?

I mentioned in a thread explaining how the Pre II Rs work in one of the Texas threads.

We have reviewed the applications and we wont be able to interview you if they are still going to be calling for some open days.

We have filled all the slots for all interview days and so we are unable to interview anyone else (this is sent after they called everyone and filled all the interview dates.

Since there are some with high stats who have not been called or received a II, I would assume they still have some dates to be filled but are notifying most others.
