2023-2024 Baylor

Anyone here know how Baylor feels about pre-interview update letters?
I believe you can send one, they have this listed in the FAQ of their admissions website:

May I send updates to my application?
Yes, if you have not received an invitation to interview at Baylor then you can send updates through the application system. If or when you receive an invitation to interview, updates to your application will not be accepted. Those who have interviewed may send "letters of intent" through the application system, but not updates to their application.

Congrats to everyone who received an II. What interview dates are being offered currently?

these are the dates that show up in the post interview survey!

can y’all tell me about the weather in Houston ? everyone keeps telling me it’s hellish and is it really that bad? (OOS, LM 78-9, received II a few weeks ago)

What’s your frame of reference? (Ie where are you coming from / where have you lived, generally speaking)

The reason I ask is it varies depending on what you’re used to. In the summer it’s HOT and very humid, to the point where you don’t feel great going outside between ~11am and 8pm (but you will anyway because there’s a ton of fun stuff to do). Then from October to May it’s pretty glorious with temps in the 70s for a lot of the winter with occasional dips to the 50s or climbs to the 80s. Then of course being on the gulf coast it can be vulnerable to hurricanes every several years.

If you’re from florida or the south/certain parts of Cali/the southeast states it’s not too much worse than you’re used to. If you’re from NYC or Chicago or Minnesota it will take some getting used to

It’s mainly just very humid being on the gulf and, as with most of Texas, it’s pretty warm from May to Sept.

I submitted my secondary around June 30, I believe. I sent an update letter around 2 weeks ago, which I believe had an impact.
Do you mind talking about the update letter? Was it like a big activity update like a publication? Trying to see if I should send one.

I updated them since I got a first-author publication in a pretty well-known journal. I also mentioned briefly that I was still volunteering in a food pantry and hospital.

I agree with the other commenter - def depends on your frame of reference. I grew up in the north/midwest, and have been in TX for 6 years and haven't gotten used to the peak heats yet (TBD). It is pretty horrible for about 4-5 months, but its mild the rest of the year. That being said -- I still hope to stay in Houston for many years to come.

does anyone know how baylor feels about post interview letters of intent? I don't know if it's too early or if it would make a prematch difference

I think I remember reading that they do not allow post interview updates, not sure if that is the same case for LOIs though.

Well, that interview day was fun! Very exciting to learn more about Baylor and I really liked the vibes of the school. As an OOS I’d love to be back near family in Houston. And I think my interviews went well!

My advice: everyone says Baylor interviews tend to be conversational but you never know who you’re going to get, so know your app inside and out and practice your interview questions in depth. (General advice) if you get an interviewer that’s hard to read, just remain fully confident in yourself- you’ve been preparing for this interview for years through all your Premed experiences so trust yourself!

I love this school a lot and hope to end up at Baylor next year! As an OOS I don’t think I’ll hear back until February at the earliest, maybe even as late as May or June (does this sound about right?). Good luck to everyone and I hope this helps!

@MCAThiccy - the residency program at Temple still falls under A&M.

Does A&M have M3/M4 students still doing rotations?

There are still MS4s here doing rotations. They will graduate in May of 2024. Afterwards, Baylor will begin renovation of the medical education center. The Texas A&M logos will be replaced with the Baylor logo, the red colored chairs will be blue, the tables will be refurnished, and the A&M library/student lounge will be remodeled (though this is expected to be completed in 2027).

Will A&M retain the residencies?

Not sure what that means, Vandy.
Currently all residency programs in Temple fall under this - Is there a plan to call them BCM - Scott and White Medical Center (Temple) program?

statistically speaking, what are the chances of me ending up at temple vs houston? I visited BCM Houston and Temple and while I’m ok-ish with ending up at Temple, I feel a lot more comfortable with the Houston vibes since I’ve only ever lived in bigger metropolitan cities. Confused on whether I should take the risk or not bc BCM Houston is hands down my top choice
180 students at Houston and 40 at Temple.

18.18% Chance at Temple, 81.82% Chance at Houston based on @wysdoc's numbers. This does not account for preferential choices though.

If I were you, I would take the chance and list Houston as your number one preferred campus. Mind you that there may be a handful of students who preferentially pick Temple, and have a higher chance of going to Temple because they preferred it. Also thank you for being tactful and respectful about the campus selection, unlike some individuals on here. We understand that some individuals may not want to end up in the regional campus and that is OK. As long as you place Houston as your preferred campus the chances of you going to Houston are far greater than ending up in Temple

@MCAThiccy Are there any OOS students at Temple? Just curious since assignments get done after the match and they are the only ones with an opportunity pick another school at that point, even in Texas.

My guess is that the odds of matching to Temple are higher than 18% for IS.

It’s funny you bring this up! I work at Baylor and a lot of the faculty know that so many people are ranking Baylor lower on their lists now compared to other houston or bigger city schools because of Temple. Understandably too depending on what they want and their preferences! I wonder if they’ll change this up in the future!

I tell people to go read @MCAThiccy's posts on this thread about how he will be a neurosurgeoning-dermatologist because the Dean Providence ensured he ended up at Temple. People should be so lucky! 🙂

I’ll actually be shadowing in the pathology department this upcoming week. One of our pathologist created the first hospital Covid test in 2021 and is well regarded in the pathological community 🙂
