2023-2024 UC San Francisco

they are MCAT blind for secondaries FYI
I don't think this is accurate.
Schools do use MCAT and GPA to screen for secondaries, but usually what happens when they say "Blind" it means that the person who does your individual interview with you doesn't have the grades/MCAT on the information in front of them.
In essence the interviewer knows you have passed through the initial screening and can concentrate on your personal characteristics, communication skills, etc. in the interview.

Question about this, where did you hear this? I’m trying to find sources that say that, but I can’t find anything official especially in relation to what part of the process they are MCAT blind to. Just trying to find more info!
During two pandemic era cycles I believe they did not look at MCATs even while handing out interviews which was communicated officially by the school somewhere. I think this may have stopped since it isn’t mentioned anywhere on the website or anything like that anymore.

@Labe
Thank you both! I was having a hard time understanding what exactly it meant. It seems that, with their rigorous screening process, it wouldn't make sense to be MCAT blind when handing out secondaries. Being MCAT blind while doing interviews makes more sense, if they are even still doing that.

Thanks!

Their MCAT median and range is very low/broad, they're either blind or extremely holistic.

I guess what I'm getting at is, MCAT blind in exactly what part of the application process?

I don’t know that they are anymore but in general they have a low emphasis on stats. In the past though they clearly stated:

“For the 2021 Admissions Cycle, the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine will accept applications without an MCAT score due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All candidates will be screened and interview decisions will be offered without utilization of an MCAT score."

I don’t see this anymore though online so that leads me to believe that they’re not following this policy anymore.

sorry, i misspoke--they're MCAT blind for interviews.

I am assuming if they are still sending secondaries to those who were verified in late June and July I should not panic yet since mine was verified in august ....right? lol
I haven't gotten anything either and was verified end of July. So dw. 🙂

Just for another data point, I'm 7/28 OOS and haven't gotten a secondary yet. I would imagine they're simply going in chronological order for OOS people.

Meanwhile I was verified June 30th. OOS too. Maybe there is no hope and I got screened out

Did any of you receive secondaries without an acknowledgement of receipt email for your primary? I just realized that I have received neither

Just out of curiosity, I heard that UCSF pre-screens pretty heavily, so what percent of applicants actually end up with a secondary?

If I apply for MD/JMP/PRIME and don't get in, could I still be considered for regular MD? If so, will the regular MD program read all essays or just the 3 for the MD program? I'm trying to decide if I should assign one of the more important diversity ones to a regular MD essay or a JMP/PRIME essay.

For the JMP, they consider you entirely separately from the regular MD program, meaning that you could technically be interviewed and admitted to both, and then have to choose between the two. See the "Selection Process" section of the JMP's website here

Is UCSF usually known for emphasizing research or work with underserved populations?

I was verified 6/28, OOS and I haven’t received a secondary yet. Should I reach out? It’s the only secondary I didn’t receive. I think my stats are above the cut off for most if not all schools!

I would advise against doing so. They don't just look at stats but also your PS/activities. Plenty of people get secondaries very late in the cycle for UCLA/UCSF so I would wait. This is my last secondary I'm waiting on too.

They screen quite heavily and typically take a long time to send out secondaries if they do select you. I was verified earlier than some people here who received secondaries a lot earlier than me

i was verified 6/6 and didn’t receive my secondary until 8/17 (also OOS). so i would wait a little longer before reaching out

Since questions 2 and 3 don't pertain to me, it should be okay to only prepare a response for question 1 correct? I'm unsure if this will have a big impact on my application (if I even make it past the screening LOL)

Ok, thanks! I got UCLA back in July, but not sure if UCSF is just a bit slower than they are.

anyone else have issues pasting their essay into the secondary? only half of my essay is getting pasted

Edit: never mind, just pasted it paragraph by paragraph to fix the issue
