2023-2024 UT Tyler

I received a secondary invite late afternoon Tuesday and had planned to get to the secondary after my Tuesday/Wednesday interviews at other schools were completed. I log on to complete it today and looks like the due date was the night I received it. Is this normal for them to give less than 12 hours to complete the secondary? I know it says no extensions, but maybe (hopefully) this was a mistake? The shortest time I've ever been given to send in a secondary was 1 week so don't understand why I was given such little time.

It's worth a call, considering, but my application portal does show that the secondary deadline is November 14th.

i would just call them. remember this is only their second year doing this and some of their team’s first year

update: interview went well i think!! i wanted to extend my gratitude to all the people who hyped me up on here and gave me their advice. it all helped me so much ◡̈

trying to stay positive!! i've fallen in love with the school and the curriculum — here's to hoping!!

Glad to hear they’re still extending interviews! Still hoping and waiting patiently ❤️😭🤞🏻 low mcat, high gpa, from Dallas but no ties to East Texas, but willing to move out there for school and practice out there too!! Love their mission.

It is true, the first 2 classes that enter will have tuition paid for all 4 years of school.
I wonder if that should make the school go to the top of my match list. The physician I work for says it's a no brainer.

Tbh if you don’t care too much about location and the “unknown” of hurdles a newer school, heck ya.

But honestly, Texas schools are so cheap to begin with that you will be fine truly ranking where you’ll be happiest and not thinking a ton about the tuition.

Personally I think there are some things to consider aside from just price - residency programs in specialties you may want, aspects of the curriculum, amongst other things.

We are lucky enough here in TX for medical education to be relatively affordable compared to other states. I think it being a no-brainer to rank number 1 would hold more true in a state where they have like 80k/yr tuition

if anyone here has an interview coming up, i’d love to know if they plan on prematching the whole class like last year! based off of not knowing anyone who prematched at the prior date & no one on SDN reporting, i wonder if they’re sending less out prior to match this year. or maybe they’re just waiting for the second round of prematches so that everyone is being considered. if you ask, or if you have any insight, lmk!

I know of someone who didn't prematch and got in through the normal match last year too! So there's also some hope to be had in that regard

This is my impression as well. I know we are all going into debt. It would be great to go into the least possible, but there are definitely other things to consider. Thank you

I second their point and want to add: all of the students on my day would explain some of the hardship of being the inaugural class but always reinforce it with “that’s why we have free tuition”. While it’s free, you’re also looking at being the one to start new orgs, transition into the new building, still giving feedback as they fine tune curriculum, establishing relationships with mentors, etc. You do a lot more work on the back end. They said they get a TON of support & all that I’ve talked to love the school, but it’s also worth noting. If you’re the kind of person who’s leadership oriented, love starting and getting involved in new things, and doesn’t mind putting in a little extra work to shadow certain specialties we may not have in Tyler then you’re a better fit than someone who’s not.

Does anyone know if they are still sending out interviews/ when the last interview will be sent out? I sent in my secondary in august and still haven’t heard back yet. I’m a pretty decent fit- IS and I spent my undergrad in a rural community and I actually want to work in a rural community. Anyone else still waiting on a II?

I also submitted my secondary back on July/august and Casper as well. Letters of rec, everything. I’m also waiting/hoping for an interview invite!! 🤞🏻

I have my first and (only) interview coming up with UT tyler, and wanted to ask if there were any traditional questions asked as follow-up questions during MMI session? I read above that normally they dont ask, just wanted to clarify. Thank you so much already. Super nervous and anxious 🙁

They will just ask follow-up questions according to the scenario--nothing out of the blue!

"In the next five to 10 years, Willis hopes to double the class size to 80. Currently they have preliminary accreditation and are aiming to receive temporary accreditation in 2025 and get full accreditation in the future. They are working on their strategic plan and continuing to add faculty, he said."

Looks like class size won't be expanding for a while but they do intend on it. UT Tyler School of Medicine facility construction underway

Abt EY 2023: "42.5% are the first generation in their family to attend graduate school, 57.5% have an income less than $100,000, 30% have an income less than $50,000, 22.5% assisted in raising other children in their family, 12.5% contributed family income, 30% were on free or reduced lunch and 27.5% were the first generation of their family to pursue their undergraduate degree.""Of the inaugural class, 95% are from East Texas and 5% have family or connections in the region and intend to practice in the area."

"When looking at the 4,000 applications for the inaugural class for the school of medicine, Willis specifically picked students from East Texas or with connections to East Texas. So far, there have been 6,000 applicants for the second class."

So curious how the East Texas stats will look this year. I haven’t followed this thread too well but I believe there’s been a fair amount of II sent to people without East Texas connections

there was last year as well. i would be shocked if it looks any different than last year as far as 100% ties.

Hey everyone! Congratulations to those who have received their IIs! I’m currently waiting to hear back regarding a potential II or not. I know this has been asked already, but, how long after submitting your secondary did you hear about your II? Patience is a virtue I’m steadily being tested on with this application process haha. Thanks yall! 😄

I heard back the day after my secondary, but I'm "local" with ETX ties. ( I say local bc ETX is kinda big lol). I think local people heard back a little quicker, so I wouldn't be too worried if you haven't yet.

Ahhh ok that makes total sense so good to know! Also, congratulations on your II! So exciting! 🎊

Anyone complete in early october hear back for a potential II? I have ties to east Texas and would love to attend this school, but I am OOS

A schools goals for residency are usually clear based on what residencies they offer. If the school does not offer a specific specialty, it requires the student to spend time in several other programs and a lot of Sub-I rotations at others to get placed.

For the life of me, I can't remember what was said during interview but what's the grading like here? Is it true P/F and for how long? And also is it in house or nbme exams? Thank you in advance!!

i have my interview coming up and i wanted to ask how long will we get for prep on the station and speaking? is it 2 mins (at the station) and 8 mins for response?

II just now!! With an interview so late in the cycle, am I interviewing for a WL spot?
no, they’re very intentional at giving everyone the same chances. you’ll be evaluated alongside everyone else for a prematch on Jan 24 or the match on Feb 16!

Nope, my friend interviewed on Dec 20th last year and is in their first class. You have the same odds as everyone else who has already interviewed, good luck!!
This is great to hear! Still waiting for an OOS II *hopefully*!! I appreciate the intentionality of admissions 👏🤗
