2024-2025 East Virginia (EVMS)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a question - I think I made a mistake by not selecting multiple prerequisite courses per section (for example, I only put 1 Biology class for the Biology lecture prereq). I cannot change it now. I emailed them and asked if the intention was for us to select multiple and the response I received was: "You may need to contact AAMC directly if you need information regarding this inquiry"... I think this was probably an automatic response, as I don't think contacting AAMC is appropriate for this? Could someone who has not submitted yet please confirm we were supposed to check multiple courses per lecture/lab section? Thank you.

UPDATE: Got through to someone and the issue is resolved.
Hi! It looks like I made the same mistake, when I called them they said they can't change anything until they start reviewing my application. Following review, if they notice this mistake, they will email me and I will have to provide the necessary prerequisites I took. Is this what they told you? If not, what did you do to resolve this?

since they screen so heavily should i expect an email saying i was screened out? submitted AMCAS 5/31 and verified before 6/28... also OOS

499 mcat, 3.72 overall gpa, 3.6 science, URM
Mcat may have screened you out. But they do look holistically at apps with stats under their minimum, so you still have a chance until they send the R. Don't lose hope!

Are you OOS or IS?

i’m OOS but with a high 50X + a GPA above 3.9, and I didn’t receive anything either

Does anyone know how to fill out the letter of recommendations section if you’re submitting a letter packet? It’s not the same as a committee letter so I feel like I should answer no?

Would it be frowned upon for the least favorite aspect of being a physician to say the financial burden or being in school while your friends start to shape their professional lives earlier than you? Imo thats the most genuine pitfall for me, but I still reiterate at the end that despite that, the journey is worth it for me because of so and so.

Should I instead talk about not being able to help everybody and such or is that a cookie cutter answer?

I'll give my opinion as a medical student (not adcom). First of all, the prompt says "part of BEING a physician." In medical school you are not a physician yet. Second, are you from a low SES background? Are you experiencing significant financial hardship? Are you on food stamps/Medicaid? Will you be using loan money to support a family? If so, you could discuss those challenges. However, if your "hardship" is that your friends have jobs/houses and you don't, IMO that could come off as immature, i.e. you're focusing on comparing yourself to others instead of on your own journey. Moreover, becoming a physician is almost a guaranteed path to eventual financial stability, so if you are not currently facing financial hardships but complain that your friends have it better even though you will probably be better off in the long run, that could also come off as immature.

What clinical experiences have you had where you watched a physician deal with a situation and thought "wow, that must be hard to deal with?" That is what you should write about. It won't come off as cookie cutter if you draw from situations that YOU have witnessed and reflected on.

I second this. While I think the missing out is a very big sacrifice, I think it could be looked down upon by adcoms as not commited or not aware of what sacrifices a physician has to make for many many years. The way you described it from my perspective- missing out is a personal situation. It is not "What is the WORST part of being a physician?" Like this other said, you are not a physician yet. I think you should dig a little deeper and think of something that others may not enjoy too and that is not ideal, more of a universal dislike. For example, clinical trials, Insurance companies, lack of work life balance, instability of having to move around during training, long hours, difficult patient situations etc. I agree with that the person said above: What have you seen that would be hard to deal with? Give a real world example of something you saw and reflect on that.

1/3 of applicants get screened out (based on what I remember). I think primarily stats are what they screen for.

Anyone know how strict EVMS is on letters of recommendation? I didn't realize they required 2 science LORs and 1 non-science LOR-- I have 1 science LOR, an MD letter, a volunteer coordinator letter, and 2 research PI letters to choose from...

If it is sent via a committee letter then I do not think you need to worry about that.

I also emailed about this. This would apply to those out of school for 2 years or more:

Thank you both!!!! such a relief
The email that @Deggroll screenshotted says that the nonscience doesn't have to be from faculty, but they might be strict about needing 2 science faculty. If your PI is science faculty that might count as some schools allow it and other don't. Of course, if you're 2 or more years out of college it wouldn't matter 🙂

Submitted on 7/25 and got the complete email the same day.

Did you upload a photo and do the prereqs too?

I submitted yesterday, and just received the complete email!
"We have received and reviewed your supplemental application" freaked me tf out for sec lol 🤣

"We have all of the materials necessary to complete your application. If you are invited for a virtual interview, you will be sent an invitation by email. Interviews are conducted from September until the end of March."
Weird. Maybe they changed it? Mine says:

Mine said this as well.

Has anyone else had issues literally submitting the secondary? I have everything filled out and tried multiple times with all three links, but the button to submit remains gray and unclickable. wanted to see if there was something obvious I am missing before reaching out to admissions?

If I am remembering correctly, I had to put N/A in one of the text boxes to be able to submit

"Are you a planning to enroll in a graduate degree program this fall or have you been previously enrolled and/or graduated from a graduate degree program?"

For this question, if your answer is no, make sure you type N/A into the text box because they didn't set it up as an optional question and you have to type something. If it's not this, I'm not sure. But just make sure you've filled everything out
