2024-2025 George Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that there were a significant amount of people last year that got a hold but still ended up getting an interview, and vice versa, plenty of people that never got a hold that did not end up getting an interview. It seems like GW holds are more neutral than with other schools
Being put on hold now means they'll re-review you later; not being put on hold right now means they really liked your app.

Multiple people talked about going straight from "Your application is complete" to an R last cycle, with no II. We can speculate, but we genuinely don't have a concrete idea of what a hold vs. no hold indicates for the future of people's apps:

And below is some insight from a current GW student from this thread last year:
Every year people go from hold -> II. It happens every year. The school gets 15k+ applicants a year and holds at the beginning are simply because they’re trying to triage the mass influx of apps.

I have absolutely no insight on how the admissions committee makes their decisions. I do really empathize with all of the neuroticism because I remember being in all of your shoes and checking my portal every day, but holds don’t mean rejection or re-review and there’s no way to predict it either way. I know people who weren’t on hold, got II, and were then waitlisted and never moved off the WL. And I was on hold, got an II, and was accepted at the tail end of the cycle. It’s really variable, which doesn’t assuage any concerns, but GW does use holds for the true purpose of putting a pause on things and it doesn’t have some underlying meaning to interpret.

Re-review? Is that normal?
I mean i dunno if it’s normal but others here are getting that, I think they don’t wanna throw my app out just yet but are not super strongly interested if I had to speculate

If you look at previous GWU years it shows a decent number of people on hold got interviews. It could be so many reasons. Best of luck this cycle!

there's no rejections/IIs on cycle track, so do they just put everyone on hold?

Is it too early to submit an update? I’ve been accepted to present at APHA this fall and have also submitted a few manuscripts for publication since I submitted my app. Is this worthwhile to add?

Will do, thanks for the input! I’m on hold for re-review, so I wasn’t sure if that would help my case at all once they get back to my application. I’ll hold off though.

same, the website just says that my file is complete but other than that, I dont see any updates. is there a spot that says that I would be on hold or something?
Yeah your application status will be in a big banner at the top when you login and say you’ve been placed on hold

Submitted on 7/16 and nothing yet just complete I’m like……this is either going in a good direction or the complete opposite only time will tell. Lol

So are we in agreement that a hold is a good thing? I also submitted 7/29 and haven't heard anything back yet. No complete email. Nothing at all.
A hold means different things at different schools. For GW, it's relatively neutral

Just checked and im on hold for re-review as of August 10th and submitted on july 27th. no idea how long its been in that status.

I was complete 7/16 and put on hold 7/28. I imagine if you are gong to get a hold it would be within the next couple days

Is anyone that submitted ASAP still marked only as complete?
I submitted 7/15 and still only marked as complete. Don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing lol

Submitted on 7/15. Had not checked my portal since submission, but just checked now and I am on hold.

Marked complete 7/19 and still complete… any news on the meaning of a hold?

So just looking through my portals and noticed GW had this message:

"Your application to The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences is complete and has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee. To date, no final decision has been made and the Admissions Committee has placed your application on hold for re-review at a later date. Files are re-reviewed by the committee periodically and there is no set schedule for decisions. We do interview from August through March. Please feel free to update your file during this time using the GW Admissions Portal. If we require any further documentation or if your status changes, we will contact you immediately. We do sincerely appreciate your interest in our program. Thank you for your patience."

Does that truly mean they've looked at my application or is that what everyone else's portal also says?

Yes it does mean they have reviewed it all and they are going to keep reading more that come in and compare them.
This is the “you are on hold “ message.
Many of you will later be pulled up for an interview

Has anyone with interview status gotten the email yet? On the website it says they will assign us a date, so I am hoping they email soon so I can put in that last minute PTO request lol.

What makes you a unique individual? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned from your experiences?
question regarding this secondary question: should it be a specific instance of a challenge. i wanted to talk abt growing up in a rural area & being first gen, but this question is oddly vague for how little characters we have the opportunity to write w... pls pls any help! this is the last thing before i can submit

I spoke about growing up in a poor community and being a first gen student, and spoke about what I learned and the challenges involved in that. should be a good prompt for you to write about

Does anyone think it's too late to add this school at this point (forgot to add it initially)? I could turn around the secondary within a day

Not too late- when you add schools on AMCAS you have to “resubmit” but that doesn’t mean they go back and verify it all over again- the new school should get your primary the next day
