Random question, but would it be a complete donation at this point applying to UW? Lived here for the first part of my life and have ties to the naval base, otherwise that’s it in terms of connections

I actually think UW is more forgiving for "late" submissions compared to other schools. If you have meaningful ties to the state/wwami region shoot your shot. How long did you live in WA?

IS II Received yesterday! Secondary submitted 7/29. I'd also like to ask if anyone has any recommendations on resources for interview prep.

Do you how they are rolling out interview invites ex: is it all at once or....? only asking because I noticed the people who got invites all submitted in July. I was marked complete early August

how "prestigious" is uwsom. i see conflicting things online—wondering what the consensus is here

I think UWSOM is interesting because it's near or at the top in research every year (at least in terms of NIH funding) and is consistently #1-3 in several in-patient metrics yet doesn't have the "name."

UW produces groundbreaking research and is one of the leaders in many fields in medical research. Public health, genomics, biology, etc.

In my opinion, UW is still relatively unknown because 99% of UWSOM students are from the WWAMI region and the statistics of the matriculated class are lower than it's similarly ranked counterparts due to a smaller applicant pool (considering again that they almost exclusively take WWAMI).

In short, objectively prestigious, subjectively unheard of.

I think looking through reports detailing where medical students match helps illuminate how other schools view UWSOM. Hope this helps

Additionally to that research point- the UW is a leading center in transplant and surgery. The UW consistent ranks highly in the nation for these fields, and trains a large amount of residents from east coast T10 schools in surgery. In my opinion, UW is effectively like UMich in that it’s a public school with extraordinary research productivity that lends to its prestige.

Anecdotally, the physicians I’ve worked with outside of WA state do know of UW and speak of them highly and also consider it in the ranks of T10 schools. I do agree that not many people beyond the medical community are familiar with UWs prestige resultant of its research pedigree.

I think this is the same with certain programs nation wide ex: the best interventional radiology residency program might be at a teaching hospital that those outside that field might not be aware of or might know about the hospital but don't realize how prestigious it is. I think rankings get pretty niche the more specific you get ex: best primary care, best research, best *insert speciality* residency program etc.

Received email to schedule an interview date this morning! Only had the option of the week of 10/7. Seattle cohort btw

Anyone know when WWAMI states start getting IIs? I've heard it's usually later b/c all the interviews happen over one week in January or something.

Ack I haven't received my scheduling email yet - Is anyone also still waiting? This is making me nervous

Just in case others are getting nervous, I wanted to share that I completed my In state secondary 7/29 and have not heard back, but this is on their website so don't fret:

"Please note that there are a few reasons why an applicant might have to wait longer to hear back than others: a) applicants are randomly assigned to screeners and not all screeners review files at the same rate or are always available to review the file when it is received; b) at certain times in the application cycle we have a large volume of applications to review, and c) we prioritize screening for cohorts whose interviews are happening sooner. Hearing back sooner rather than later (or vice versa) does not indicate an applicant's competitiveness or likelihood to be offered admission"
