MSTP secondary questions:

1. List University of Minnesota faculty members you would be interested in potentially working with for your PhD studies in our program. A list of names is sufficient, and they do not need to be in any rank order. You may provide up to 12 names. (300 character limit)

2. Describe the area(s) of research you are interested in pursuing during your PhD training and how your interest(s) align with the research opportunities available at the University of Minnesota (700 character limit)

3. What factors, either personal or professional, influenced your decision to apply to the University of Minnesota MSTP? (500 character limit)

4. How does your background (identity, past work, leadership, socioeconomic status, first generation status, disability, etc.) inform your understanding of and support for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion? (700 character limit)

5. OPTIONAL. What other pertinent information would you like to bring to the attention of the MSTP? This is an opportunity for you to discuss an aspect of your physician scientist journey that you have not already presented in your application. You may also update us with any current experiences that were not included in your AMCAS application. (700 character limit)

@wysdoc
This is exactly the same as last year (DEI and all) and pretty early for UMN? Could it be a mistake on their part?

This seems like a tough one 😢. At least 1500 characters isn't too long.

Thank you for sharing!! Would you mind mentioning when you submitted your primary/ when it was verified?

Hi there,

UMinnesota requires that students take an upper level humanities course - upper level is defined as beginning with "3+". I only have an English class that begins with a "2" - has anyone gotten by with something like this before?

Hey! Incoming M1 here.

Fwiw I was a solidly natural science major with several humanities/social science electives that were all around the 2XX level. It's worth nothing I'm IS and attended one of the more recognized LACs in MN, which might've been a factor.

Wouldn't worry too much about it if I were u!

For people who received secondaries, did you have a Preview score already? I have a pending score and am wondering if they are screening secondaries this year.

I took my PREVIEW 06/24, but haven't gotten a score back yet. I also haven't received a secondary yet. I'm IS.

I'm in the exact same boat as you - took preview 6/25, no secondary, IS.

anyone still not get a secondary?

How are y’all approaching this prompt? Getting major writer’s block with it..

IS applicant here. I discussed my experience volunteering in the state and how I served diverse members of my community. Then I talked about how my experience and insight working with diverse groups of people will help me collaborate with other students at the school. If you're OS, I would talk about any connection you have with Minnesota, but if you don't, I would talk about how you have some form of insight to contribute and how your experiences make you collaborative with diverse groups. The part about "caring for all the people of our state," I would add a little note about potentially practicing as a physician in the state. You don't have to fully commit to the state, but I think Minnesota is one of those schools that like applicants who would consider staying in the state. Keep in mind, I am a first-time applicant, so take it with a grain of salt if you want, but I know someone who will be an M1 this year, and he told me to talk about any connections you have to the state or reference experiences with primary care (on the whole application, not this question specifically). Hope this is helpful to some degree!

for those talking about PREview scores, i reached out to the program and they said that the MSTP program does not require PREview, only the MD program requires it.

can you confirm that this is for MD applicants?

Does anyone know what the secondary supplemental video response entails? Not sure if I should prepare before opening it

Don't do that, schools most likely don't want those responses out there. It is unfair to applicants that went before to not have that information readily available.
How would your recommend preparing for it then? I got an interview scheduled for 9/18, and am not sure how to prep for the secondary supplemental or if I should just go straight into it.

People have said its similar to capser, I'm just gonna treat it like an MMI or for when I took casper (look at a few ethics topics and wing it lol).

an info session i attended said to just make sure you open the video responses when you are fully presentable and ready to start talking because the recording starts immediately

not sure how formal you are thinking, but I would assume to dress as if it's part of an interview (at least from the top up)! it probably won't take up a whole lot of time, but it's still part of your application trying to sell yourself to the admin – would be best to not show up on video with a hoodie on, messy hair, and sitting in your bed

fair enough!

Congrats! What interview dates did they offer? Also, are you main track?
Thanks! I'm main track, September 19 was the earliest available for me, but by the time I decided to select the 19th someone had snatched it up
(a matter of minutes) so they might be going quick for the early dates. Either that or I was just really unlucky.
