Night 9

By early afternoon, all of them had provided collaborated witness statements to the police. Nobody would be charged in this unfortunate accident.
They had conceded to blaming it on mental illness. A man who suddenly panicked because he thought the six of them were trying to take him into the future. Everyone agreed that a small white lie was perfectly acceptable, and none of the other people who had witnessed the accident would be any the wiser.
Sarah, Amy, and Jason, of course, were still exceptionally confused.
"Let's go to the Space Needle and we'll explain." Cliff told them.
It was just about a thirty minute walk from the library to the Space Needle.
Jason and Amy walked close to each other, their arms occasionally brushing, but he seemed to be oblivious to the fact that she was uncomfortable. Cliff tried to get to know their new friends, and struck up a conversation with Sarah.
"I hear you're an engineer?"
"Yes, I'm almost done with my PhD. It's apparently a big deal to have women in the STEM fields. I have a fantastic job already lined up."
"Yeah, it's refreshing to see how times have changed. Where will you be working?"
"An engineering firm in Ottawa. I'm from Toronto, if you weren't sure of my accent."
"Hm."

They arrived at the Space Needle. Carly, Nick, and Cliff led them up to the closet where the time machine was being kept.
However, it was gone.
"Crap!" Carly called out. "Where did it go?"
"How about the other items? Are they still here?" Nick asked.
Carly walked over to the back corner and found that the fake IDs were still inside the bucket.
"Yes, they're still here." She replied.
"Who took it? Could someone have just happened upon it, and decided to get rid of it? Or, I guess it's possible that there are still more people out there that are working against us." Nick concluded.
"They must've known that we had found it. Who, though?"
"Can you tell us what you're talking about?" Sarah asked.
"Of course!" Carly responded. "Days ago, when apparently you guys had gone off to the library, a lot of us stayed back in the Space Needle to look for clues. Nick, here, was actually part of the group that originally stumbled upon the time machine. Nick, show them the photos."
Nick obliged and pulled out the envelope of pictures. He passed around the two that depicted the time machine.
"I found the film canister in here at the same time." Jason started, "Then, we got it developed and noticed that mysterious figure in one of them. Do you see it?"
The three nodded.
"Well, we came back here to examine the area where he was standing by, and buried under a bunch of cleaning supplies we found all of these IDs. They're fake. They belong to the freaks that trapped us here."
Sarah went over to the bucket to take a look.
"Oh my god, it really is Leonard."
Amy and Jason followed suit, just to confirm.
"Sarah, I was looking all over for you because I thought you could help us repair the machine. It was as dead as a doorknob. As you can see, it's completely gone now."
"Well, that's alright. We've actually been designing plans to build one from scratch. Leonard included. Although, now that I know he was trying to keep us here, I wonder if there are any issues with the design.."
