A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends. Do you want to fly straight into Kirksville on a 10 seat plane? If so, first fly into St. Louis and then take the flight into Kirksville. If not, I'd fly into Des Moines and just drive from there (~2.5 hrs.).

When I interviewed, I flew into STL and then drove (~3.25 hrs.) from there because I didn't want to get on that small plane. Didn't think about flying into Des Moines at the time, but it's definitely closer and it's a smaller airport so it's easier to navigate.
Coming from a Des Moines native I would suggest trying to fly in there. Fares have been dropping ever since Southwest came into the picture, not a bad drive at all until you get about 20 miles north of KVegas, which still isn't bad.

I'm 100 percent surprised you've been rejected...even if u didn't get an interview I'm surprised u at least didn't get put on hold. Obviously everything happens for a reason and there's a better plan for you 🙂 I'm sure u will fall in love with one of the other many schools u are interviewing at!

And I know being in a relationship in this process sucks - my boyfriend is a 3rd year at LECOM Erie and who even knows where I'm going to end up. You'll make it work from wherever you go! 👍

Thanks, I hope you're right 🙂 We've been together for almost 3.5 years now and I'm sure we can make it work even if we're apart.

Good luck to you 🙂

Lolz try and say the same thing and I get scolded... Tisk Tisk

Does anyone know how many candidates interview during one interview date?

If I am interviewing at KCUMB in October would it be worth it to send an in the area email to KCOM? Do they respond to those kinds of requests or do they ignore them?

Don't know that they would be able to accommodate you I got an interview earlier this week and they only had dates open in November. I guess it's worth a try, though.

Did you recieve your invite today?

Meh... I wouldn't mind coming to Missouri twice, three times even. I will just have to make it work in the budget... If I get interviews at KCOM and SLU in addition to KCUMB i will just make it happen.

Getting a bit disheartened here...3.45s/3.7c/32R, 5k hours of hospital, and Master's degree. I am a re-applicant, though, but was rejected last year. Like someone said before, there is a lot more than just numbers they are looking at, but still, I haven't heard anything from them and they received everything of mine in June. Assuming that I'll be rejected, though, the DO that I talked to said that KCOM is VERY selective, and very proud of being the birthplace of Osteopathic Medicine.

Just cancelled my interview and withdrew my app from here. Good luck to all!

I'll reply to myself. I was disheartened, so I went to check on my app and realized that it hadn't been completed. Two of my LORs are written by people with the same last name...I sent the wrong one...I'm an idiot...

Glad you figured that out!

Did you already get accepted somewhere else?

Well he has received 11 interview invites, and I know he was accepted to LECOM-Erie so yeah I'm not surprised. Who can afford to fly that much???

Interview Invite! Is it bad that I didn't even know where this school was located until I had the ii. totally googled "kirksville" to see where it was. hehe..Nevertheless, feeling very fortunate right now. 🙂

Sweet! Congrats! When are you going?

feeling the same as you. 3.35sci/3.25c/31R re-app and i haven't heard a word. I visited over the summer and met with an admissions adviser. I was hoping that would help but so far nothing. the waiting is getting rough and it is only (almost) september!

Where is the best airport to travel into? What is the closest and what is the cheapest? Or both? 🙂

Can I get some more feedback on this please. The closest, Kirksville Regional, airport has tickets that are about $200 more than the flight tickets to St. Louis International Airport. But the cheaper airport is about 3 hours away from the school. Being OOS, driving this much would be very inconvenient plus being <25, I would be paying extra for car rental. what should I do?

Prob been answered before how many do they interview? Got my II today.

Find out how much it would cost to rent a car + gas.

Someone posted earlier that the drive from des moines airport is about 2.5 hours and a little longer from st louis airport. If the cost of airfare + driving is less than the cost of the additional $200 to kirksville, then do that.. otherwise, just fly into kirksville.

Those are really your only options.

Be aware that the flights to Kirksville from STL are on a 10 seat puddle jumper plane. NOT a commercial airbus.

I think that I posted this question earlier, but for those of you getting interviews, are you applying to KCOM in the Early Decision Program or just the general admissions cycle? I am curious because their website said that the early decision interviews are all done in September or early October. If someone could address this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I'm doing just the general admissions and my interview is scheduled for Nov. 2nd

i didn't even know if they had a Early Decision Program. 😕

I did the early decision program. The interviews are not done any earlier than the regular admissions. They are all mixed in together. It just comes down to what spots are still open when you receive your invite.

I did general admission and my interview is October 1st, which I believe is the 1st interview date this cycle.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason that you applied to a school, spent the money on the initial and secondary application, and never bothered to look at the school's website and google more information about the town? It seems kind of odd to go by reputation alone. After all it could be great school, but if it is within the arctic circle would you still have spent the money to apply, even though 3 months out of the year you would be in total darkness?

Just curious.

Thanks to all of you who posted your info. I guess I was under the impression that the EDP would have provided some earlier dates and perhaps some expedited turnaround of the applications. Thanks again!

Location isn't much of a factor for some people. Personally, I went more for reputation...not gonna lie. And frankly, I wouldn't listen to how a lot people describe Kirksville on SDN.

Already been rejected, but I can't seem to stay out of this thread.

I'll be going based on reputation as well with a few exceptions.

Location is a factor for me, however, I don't care about living rural and actually think I would prefer it because the cost of living is lower.

I have lived in urban, suburban, and rural areas and I like all of them. They all have good things and bad things about them. While I will always consider myself a "city girl" I can definitely appreciate the country. 😉

Last Year I booked separately flies for both St. Louis with Southwest and then Kirksville with Cape Air... the "10 seat puddle jumper plane" it's just fine. I saved around $200!!

Good luck guys!!

I grew up in a rural area, but I definitely prefer the city now. I could go back if I had to, but given the choice I would pick suburban/urban.

I didn't make my decision on where I am applying based on location. As long as the school is in America, I don't really care about location. Initially, when I was finalizing my school list, I did look at the school website, but that was back in June so I didn't remember much. I expect medical school to keep me busy enough to not have to worry too much on how much or little a city has to offer. Frankly, I don't understand why you think picking based on reputation is odd. Many pre-med without stellar stats do this. Ofcourse, IF I have the fortune of getting multiple acceptances (seems unlikely at this point) then I would definitely think about location to make my final decision, but if a school in arctic circle was the only one to accept me, then I would happily go there. 🙂

I have the same thought process. If I get to choose which med school I get to attend, of course I would research the locations of the schools. Plus you never quite know what the location of a school is like until you interview/tour there.

👍 school will keep you all kinds of busy so no worries

If you pick a school because it's near the beach, you are going to be disappointed.

If you haven't yet applied to medical school you might not be aware of the progression some people's mindset (mine included) go through as they get deeper into the cycle. Here's a brief outline of my own experience.

April/May: I'm going to apply everywhere because med school is going to cost me $250k+ so what's $10k more in applications? I don't care where I go.. I just want to get in somewhere and I'll apply everywhere that my stats are halfway decent for.

June: Man those primaries were expensive, but it doesn't matter now. I've already applied so I might as well pre-write all my secondaries just in case.

July: Wow, some of the schools I submitted my primary to are actually pretty undesirable and/or have requirements that I don't meet.. I guess I'll save $200-$300 and not bother submitting the secondary.

August: So lazy.. why couldn't this school send me the secondary last month? Interviews are super expensive.. I'll pass on these secondaries so I can save the money for interview expenses.

So you see, as you get further along you become lazy and more picky (at least I did) about where you want to go even though in the beginning you didn't care and would go anywhere.. even the arctic circle.

+1 👍 100% accurate.

Like I've said before... KVegas not having any distractions = more studying = better grades.

Maybe as an applicant with a young family and being over 30 has made me a little more selective about location. I looked at the schools that were in rural areas and I am not applying to any school that is in a town of greater than 100,000 which brought down the total number significantly. I was looking for quality of life, safety of my family, and low cost of living.

I figure that the person who graduates last in their class from the lowest ranking medical school in the US is still called Doctor and many schools follow the mantra P=MD (or DO). Medical school is great for developing a base knowledge and getting some first expereinces, but the majority of the doctors I have worked with in the past all agree that the most influential part of their training is where they had their residency.

Schools are important and are great, and there are definitely schools with better faculty than others, but I think medical school is a lot like other grad schools, you get out what you put in. If you do the minimum, you will be a so-so, but if you look for opportunities to excel and get hands on experiences, then you have the opportunity to be great, the faculty is their to guide and direct the methods of your discovery.

I guess the other big factor for my school selection was how much am I willing to spend on applications and interviews as an applicant on a single income and not wanting to rack up the credit cards.

I am looking forward to seeing if I get an interview from my MD and DO schools, but will not be applying general admission to more schools until my EDPs are rejected or delayed.

Depends. Do you want to fly straight into Kirksville on a 10 seat plane? If so, first fly into St. Louis and then take the flight into Kirksville. If not, I'd fly into Des Moines and just drive from there (~2.5 hrs.).

Can I ask how you book the flight from STL to Kirks? I couldnt find it on Orbitz or the major travel sites.
