A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Non-trad applicant. 33 MCAT with 9 1/2 years direct patient care experience. 3.75 GPA, 2 bachelor's degrees. LOR from graduate of KCOM that I have worked with for 7 years. Denied interview.

That's disappointing. I interviewed there today and found non-traditional applicants to be in abundance.

here is how my interview day went:
I wasn't very impressed with the campus tour. The building could definitely use some updating. They made us walk over to the anatomy lab which was about a 5 minute walk away (Ladies, wear comfortable shoes!). My favorite part of the day was that the first years were doing dissection in the anatomy lab when we were taken to the lab so we got to see what that looked like. I think this would definitely take away the "shock" factor for me when I step into my first day of anatomy lab. As for Kirksville, it really is a rural town and being from CA,It was very, very different from what I am used to. When I asked the students there what they do for fun in Kirksville, they really were at a lost for words because there really isn't much to do there at all. The next big city is about a 4 hour drive away.

It's actually kinda disappointing that they didn't point much out to you. There is plenty to do in Kirksville to keep you busy, when you actually have down time. I guess it depends on your hobbies though. If you like hiking, fishing, boating, etc. then Kirksville is a great place. If you like shopping for fun (I don't) and you don't want to drive, yes you are very limited. Truman State has concerts and stuff that you can attend with popular artists (e.g. B.o.B. in October). There are several bars you can go to on the weekends (or even weeknights). I will admit that Kirksville doesn't really shine when it comes to restaurants. They are OK, but if you are looking for fine dining then you will have to drive elsewhere. Also, there are festivals/fairs/etc. that occur during certain weekends on the square. Plus, if you get involved with clubs, you have the opportunity to host your own events so that could be another thing to do. Also, if you're into wineries, there is a relatively nice one about 5 minutes away. One of the great things about a small town is that you can walk most places (hair cut, movie theatre, bar, restaurants, etc.)
:luck:

There is PLENTY to do in Kirksville. Also, this isn't undergrad....you have about one night a week to do something "fun". Maybe a whole weekend if study schedule allows. I can attest that I was never bored when I was living in Kville. There is always a group of friends to go out to dinner with, go to the bowling alley, drive down to Columbia, the winery, get together at Theta Psi (is that still around?!), Prom in December, people watch at Walmart, catch a movie, hike/bike/run/canoe/etc out at Thousand Hills, and there is always intramural sports/campus clubs going on. Trust me on this one...by the time you get into the med school grind...splitting pizza and beer/soda/whatever with your friends will be all you need "to do for fun".

My classmates were from all across the country, big city and small town and everyone ends up liking Kville because it really is a great place to learn.

Also, what building needs updating? Tinning, Connell, the Library are all less than 5 years out from construction/remodeling. The anatomy lab? I always thought that it would be nice to have it be remodeled...but think about it. Think about what is going on in those rooms...is it a big deal if its fancy and new? Not really.

One more thing....there is fine dining in Kirksville! Have you been to Pancake City? After 1am? And don't tell me La Pa isn't the best mexican you've ever eaten! 😀

Any other questions....hit me up.

Does anyone know when the selection committee meets to decide on the first round of interviewees?

I was equally confused by that statement... isn't KCOM a relatively modern campus?

For the most part it is (and the parts that aren't you won't really notice because you will be too busy). Next year the buildings that they are currently constructing should be done. While a good portion of it may go to the dental school I believe they will move some stuff over there like maybe anatomy or more lecture halls (just speculating). So that's something to look forward to.

And, aside from the architecture, you have WiFi wherever you go on campus and we all use iPads. I'd say that's pretty modern.

The only place I see that can use some remodeling is student housing. Everything else is doing just fine for a 120 year old school.

Anyone receive an II lately? Especially if you were complete on or after 09/10? Stats? I'm just curious if my application has been passed up and I haven't received the rejection letter yet.

No II here, but I've officially been complete for 3 months as of today. No II, no rejection, no on-hold letter. Is that weird? 🙁

I got my ii last week and was complete on the 20th of September.
My stats are abysmal compared to many people here: 3.18/3.5/30q and I got an ii personally via email. Then I got a call today to move my interview to this Monday. Not bragging, but just saying that it seems that the process works in mysterious ways.

Perhaps I'll give them a call tomorrow... Complete 8/27

Hmmm... I definitely wouldn't call those stats "abysmal." Congrats on the invite!

Ouch... I think I have been passed up. I feel like the nerdy fat boy standing outside looking at the cool party inside and pounding on the door begging "please let me in!" :bang: hahaha. It'll happen, it'll happen, just gotta keep going.

I was complete for over two months before getting my interview invite! Hang in there!

I am finishing this secondary and I have a quesiton for you guys. I am sorta- kinda recycling my atsu-soma essay and incorporating it into this one. Is that a bad idea?

Thanks! My science gpa makes me sad, but I'm glad that I took the plunge and applied this cycle!

Great idea! Totally separate adcoms. Do it to it!

So someone dropped for this Friday, and I've got their interview spot! This is my first interview of the cycle... I am a terrible combination of excited and nervous at the moment. Will anyone else be there on Friday?

My only disappointment with the interview day was that we didn't get a financial aid talk at all nor did the morning talk discuss enough specifics about the clinical rotations. This is actually not specific to KCOM though and more a problem with all DO programs (at least that I've interviewed at). I guess because students are split up and not everyone has the same experience it is hard to go into detail about the clinicals. This is my only concern though since everyone stresses that clinicals are the most important part of your education. I enjoyed the day though and the drive was not as bad as I expected. I too enjoyed seeing the anatomy lab and all of the students I met seemed happy to be there and more than willing to answer questions.

I'm surprised! Last year we got such a good financial aid talk...i remember being impressed that he actually sat us down and discussed finaid with us (steve is the bomb). id hate to think they cut that out of the interview day 🙁
although, to sum up, the general message is - debt. lots of debt.

haha yea after having been on a few others that seems to be the general idea. one of my interviewers printed off a budget from last year for me so I will just assume next year's tuition would be similar. They did cut that from the interview, otherwise they just cut it from my day...

Just don't mention ATSU SOMA in your essay to KCOM. I recycled my KCOM essay to use for PNWU and accidentally left "Kirksville College of Medicine" in the first sentence.:smack:

I was pretty surprised when they offered me an interview... Strange.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to do that. I left VCOM in an essay going to Campbell, and I think it cost me an interview invite there. I got the VCOM interview, though.

Hello guys, received my secondary from Kirksville. Have several questions. They ask for scores, specifically ACT, GRE, SAT. Am I supposed to fill those out and recall those scores? If so, where can I find those out?

Your college transcripts may have them. That's where I got mine. You can also try Collegeboard.com for SAT scores.

Hey all, I'm pulling my app from this school and canceling my interview (have been accepted by a school higher on my list) so Nov 2 should now be open for someone. Good luck to all!

Accepted! Just got the phone call, this is by far one of my favorite schools

ACCEPTED! I love it when schools call with good news. Feeling very grateful!🙂

Congrats on all the acceptances guys! Must be a fab feeling! 🙂

OMG that's absolutely amazing! Very very big congrats for you two! 🙂 being together with your significant other is not too common with med school!

Congrats on all the acceptances!!!! I'm SO excited to meet you all next year!!!

exactly how i feel...i think i've been waiting the longest in this thread. complete since 8/1 🙁 i called the school and even they were curious as to why my app is taking so long...a little befuddled or perhaps their way of indirectly saying i got rejected post-secondary. i had an interview at SOMA though and love the campus...just wished kcom could show the same love too

ALMOST the longest - i was complete early july and still nothing. Maybe they overlooked my app because i contacted them to ask what was happening and i'm going under review next week. Here's hoping for good news! :xf:

Hey, congratulations on having an interview. As of right now I have not received one and am still waiting. kind of sucks not knowing what's going on with your application. We will see what happens. I will say, life loves toying with you when your expecting something big haha. I have received more random out of state phone calls in the last two months than I think I have ever received  hahaha.

So I was scheduled to interview in December, but then I was called and asked if I could move the interview to this Monday. I spent the whole week excited and just NOW realized that I haven't gotten a single email? Am I missing out on anything? Do I need to panick?

Being from a big city, Kirksville is going to be hard to get use too.

It will take a little adjustment, but we don't go to school in a barn on a giant farm isolated from the rest of the world. Once school starts, you will never feel like you have nothing to do. And if you do feel that way, you're doing it wrong.

And there are many people in my class from big cities and they seem to be doing just fine. Don't sweat it.

As long as they sent you the standard "You're invited to interview" email when you originally set your interview date for December, you should still be okay. The itinerary does not change much between interviews. If it's making you nervous, though, it can never hurt to call. They admissions office is very nice.

I interviewed this last Friday. I know I won't hear anything until at least Wednesday.... but it's nerve racking! This is a really excellent school.

Did you both interview on 10/8? If so, I interviewed with you both & sat by you at lunch 🙂 Congrats!! I was accepted today as well!!! Glad you both made it in together like you were hoping!!!

why yes, we did, haha I am glad you got accepted too! I was wondering about you, you should PM me! 😀

What the other guy said, collegeboard.com if you can get your old login info from them. Me, I just remembered my total score and drew out my individual scores to the best of my memory.

Got an II from them today, and was offered an opening for Friday! I have some reservations about Kirksville as a town (from knowing friends that went to Truman), but I know this is a great school so I'm definitely going to check it out for myself while I'm up there.

For those wondering, 3.09 cGPA, 3.12 sGPA, 27O. ECs are probably the highlight of my application. I forget if KCOM needs your LORs to complete your secondary... if so, 10/2. If not, 9/27.
