I think I'm going to be bar tending at the Welcome to Hell party, so there's some extra incentive to attend, not that you needed any more. It'll be a crazy time if it's anything like last year. Also, go to the party at Gusano's. It'll be rad, too. I'm skipping most of it to see The Crystal Method, but I'll be there at the beginning. See ya there!

I want to go to Gusano's but I haven't met a single person here yet and don't want to go alone!

Anyway, where do we park for orientation? Is it the same paid lot they used for interviews?

I'm not certain, but I think if you don't want to pay for parking, you'll need to get a lot 14 permit from the parking office.

I'd go ahead and show up to Gusano's. Nobody knows anybody except the pre-matric kids, so it's just a big social cluster**** of introductions. It's a lot of fun, and everyone's very open about meeting people since you're all in the same boat. Just go introduce yourself to random people. The few people I've met in your class seem pretty cool, and I can promise you that the people in my class who'll be out are very friendly.

Yup. No one knows anyone yet (except for the pre-matric people) so don't let it bother you. There will be plenty of M2's and maybe M3's around who want to share their drunken wisdom with you about the freshman year.

Stupid question but what dress attire is appropriate for orientation...hopefully casual?

I'd say the attire will range from one or two people in ties to a few people in concert t-shirts and flip flops. If you're worried about it aim for the middle. It will be hot outside but don't be surprised if you freeze to death sitting in the lecture hall.

Personally, I would buy zero of the suggested texts. None of them. Not one. Use review books.

My book opinions are here:

Hey Al, if you didn't use the "required" texts did you find that you missed any points by not doing the "assigned" reading pages? And did you just read the areas in the review books that covered the general topics covered in the assigned reading for a given lecture?

I'm considering buying both, even though on my tour yesterday both guides told me lippincott's was the way to go. Which I already have (biochem). And I'd like to not waste money on another textbook, but I the scared freshman am skeptical.

There's one test all year that draws heavily upon things found only in the reading, and that's the written portion of the gross exam for pelvis and perineum. Borrow a copy of COA for that one. You can have mine for a bit if you get in touch. Other than that, everything you need will be in the slides. There are a few pictures that are taken from the books, but if you know what you're looking at, you don't need them. I think micro has 3-4 suggested texts anyway, so you're seriously be wasting your time and money trying to track down all the picture that might be on an exam. Just know the characteristics of each slide, and you'll be in great shape.

My study plan was to go back through the day's slides and read the relevant review book sections afterward. That's definitely all you need. Do not buy Devlin or The Cell. Both are immense wastes of time.
