GW, Jeff, or Georgetown?

Please help! I am stuck on this decision. Would love to live in either Philly or DC.

I am interested in the MPH option, so might be ruling Georgetown out.

Really like the students at GW and Jeff.

Concerned at prices in DC.

Any suggestions?

Are the prices for tuition comparable? Have you gotten your fin. aid packages yet?

These are three very equivalent schools, with Georgetown possibly ahead because of rank. But, meh, rank schmank.

I think it depends on where in DC you wanna live. If you're cool with taking the metro you could get a place in DC that would be comparable to Philly.

It kinda sounds like you like DC better??? Am I picking up the right vibe?? I have a friend at GW, she pays about $600 per month. Similar to what you would pay in Center City. The difference is, is that her apt is really tiny. But she can walk to the monuments which is pretty friggin' cool.

Everythings a trade off, isn't it lol.

Also unless you're super sure about the MPH thing, I wouldn't make ur decision based on that. Its essentially a 5th year, and after four years of intense school and mounds of debt I've seen a lot of docs I work with go straight to residency and then do the MPH afterward bc many hospitals will help with the cost of tuition if you build it into your contract. Especially if you do some sort of academic fellowship.

you can do an MPH through georgetown (sorta). They have an agreement with Hopkins and you can go there after your 2nd year. I dont know cost or what you will need to do for living, but that does exist.

O yes, it is also possible to get a masters in public policy at Georgetown after your 2nd year. I have a bit of interest in that as relating it to health policy.

However, pick where you will be most comfortable, i think you should consider the masters 2ndary.

I'm about 75% sure about the MPH thing. You are right, everything is a trade off!!
I've heard about the costs of MPH being covered post-grad...but I've never actually talked to someone who had this happen. Does this still exist in these economic times??


Also, as a side note, my DAD works at JEFF. HE is a strong presence, and I don't know if I want to deal with that for four years...but maybe I'm making too big of a deal about that?

For sure. The hospital where I work has a tuition reimbursement policy. One of the residents here will be staying on for a faculty position and she worked out her contract with the director for them to help her pay for her MPH. My co-worker just finished her MBA, and my boss just got his MS in epidemiolgoy. The moral is, is that you can do an MPH wherever and whenever. If I were in your shoes I would make my decision first on the MD part, then think about the MPH thing, but thats just IMO.

As for the Dad thing. I feel ya, if I had to be in close proximity with my dad again, I'd go insane.

Thats a really tough call. I think it depends on your father. My parents would be loving, but extremely overbearing. When I took orgo, my mom always tried to tell me how to study....you can imagine how I felt about that lol. Will your Dad be the interfering type? Is he enough of a presence at Jeff that your peers and coworkers(in M3/M4) would constantly cry nepotism?

Good luck, with your decision!!! Those are three wonderful schools. I have friends at all three and they all love where they are and are doing extremely well.

If thats true...thats awesome Hopkins has one of the best public health schools in the world. People come from all over the world to go to the JH Bloomberg School of Public Health!!!

OP look into that. I have a co-worker who went to Hopkins for her MPH and she looooved it and just got an amazing education.

Just wanted to touch on some issues you bring up in regards to Jeff. I'm sure you've probably looking into Jefferson's MD/MPH program, but there's 2 different options you can go with the MPH. You can either get the MPH at Jefferson's new school of population health, or get your MPH from Johns Hopkins (this is how it used to be done). Both take the same amount of time.

As for the issue with your dad, there are a couple students that I know who are children of professors and higher ups and they've fit in just fine. Generally, people won't make a big deal about it if you don't make a big deal about it. You got into med school because you were qualified and people respect that.

At the end of the day, all of these schools are solid, so really it's about trusting your gut feeling. Good luck making your decision, and feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about Jefferson.
