Liberty University (LUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am actually scared after seeing all these posts about religious bias, MCAT scores, medical school performance, etc... 🙁
this new school needs more support 🤔

I have family in Lynchburg, where LUCOM is at, and the area is pretty nice. Moreover, LUCOM has a beautiful campus up on the hill. Liberty has mad money, and I can't imagine them going through all the trouble to make a medical school to let it fail. LUCOM will be successful.

There is literally no way we can talk about this school's performance until they match a class. Read their goals and missions online (their undergraduate institution is completely independent of this school.) If you're interested, apply. Basing it off of trolls is useless

It really doesn't though. Their MCAT scores are exactly the same as other new D.O. schools, and you could the make case they are slightly better. The school doesn't have any religious bias, just because a school is founded with religious beliefs does not mean it is biased. Essentially all the Ivy League schools were founded as bible colleges and that worked out didn't it now. I don't know how anybody could be worried about medical school performance since they have only been teaching their first class for a couple of weeks.

This forum has a lot of trolls and people with terribly biased views towards Christianity. BTW this school does teach evolution, contrary to many of the lies spread on this forum.

What do you mean by this? I'm pretty sure LUCOM's first class (C/O 2018) started last year.

Thank you everyone for commenting on my post. I feel better now. I have talked to one of the adcom members, who seemed really nice. Hopefully they will call me for an interview. (btw I am muslim + a person of color = diversity!)
Good Luck everyone 🙂

Just got an interview date! Anybody know how the deposits work upon acceptance?

Congratulations! when are you going to schedule?
How long did it take to hear after your app was completed?

Do they offer ii w/o having all pre-reqs completed?

The day I miss an exam question on the COMLEX or USMLE directly related to evolutionary theory...well I guess that's the day I will regret choosing to be in the LUCOM inaugural class.

The odds of this happening are virtually zero.

Fancy seeing you here lol. I love our class haha

Just thought I would drop in to see what all the commotion is about. A good friend that I went to grad school with last year is coming to interview on the 25th. He said things were a bit heated in here.

He also said that the LUCOM staff have been nothing but professional and courteous to him, and it seems that the unprofessional behavior on this forum is limited to the participants who have no interest in applying to, or attending for that matter, LUCOM. So far it appears that the current students and applicants are maintaining the level of professionalism that is expected of future doctors, and that makes me proud.

EH123, I have to agree...I am rather fond of our first year class. To respond to this sort of criticism from people who have never been to our school with the level of professionalism we have is a trait that I feel is very becoming of future physicians. It is a testament to the fact that the faculty, staff, and students who are at LUCOM are not bigoted, judgmental, closed-minded, individuals who deny science or its place in medicine. Rather, we are a motley crew of individuals from different creeds, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, etc. that have come together because we have a common thread woven into our cloth; the thread of compassionate service to others. And by others, I mean absolutely anyone and EVERYONE. There is not a person in this building who would turn their nose up at helping any person, for any reason, I can promise you that. That is a testament to the incredible work in the admissions department, and the tone set for them by the administration and staff. The attitude here is driven from the top down, and that is rare these days. The faculty and staff here drive us towards service by being amazing role models, and providing exceptional service and guidance to us as students.

I am even more excited to see next year's class, and it is my hope that with the hard work we all put in over the next weeks, months, years, and decades, the reputation of this institution will stand on its own. If even one person makes it out of this program and goes on to provide access to medical services in a community which otherwise might not have had access to quality medical care, then the world is a better place. The truth is, that number will be much higher than one.

Show me the patient that lauds physician based on their incredible board scores...good luck finding one. Show me the patient that lauds their physician based on how much they care about them, and how much they trust them...you should have no trouble finding people in this category.

Seems like LUCOM students get to be apart of something special. Haters gonna hate.

I scheduled it in the first two weeks of September. I am really amazed they offered me an interview two days after I sent my letters of recommendation through interfolio. But I do have highish stats.

I think I have all my pre-reqs, but I wouldn't worry about pre-reqs if you have all but a few done they shouldn't have a problem extending an interview. I mean you do have a year to take any needed pre-reqs.

http://www.liberty.edu/media/1290/pdfs/LUCOM Student Handbook 2014-2015 (Revised July 2014).pdf

Spent some time reviewing the material in here. Contrary to a lot of people's beliefs, LUCOM's controversial policy (R-rated movies, etc.) apply to individuals LIVING ON CAMPUS- thus, they have to subscribe to the Code of Conduct administered by the LU.

Please go through it to clear some misconceptions. They explicitly state that all patients should be treated as EQUAL. So, the individuals scaring people away because of LUCOM's "fanatical Christianity" need to get their facts straight.

LUCOM is its own entity.

There's a difference between the times of today and when the Ivys were founded...Trying to make such a comparison is ridiculous. The religious convictions of LU are the equivalent of stone age ideology and bigotry. Personally, I'm more concerned that COCA gave LU accreditation given the history the school's founding (Falwell). I don't want the osteopathic profession associated with such a school.

My personal views of LU aside, i'm sure all of the students attending the medical school are well intentioned ambitious future physicians, I just caution them to focus on learning medicine and ignore any religious bigotry that the school might try to shove down their throats...

This is the point. It's the principle of the matter. It's irrelevant if the first class kills the boards and matches well (unlikely), because the school still shouldn't exist. The whole thing is totally weird. The students who go there study in a library named after someone who thought aids was god's punishment for being gay. Now the osteopathic profession is associated with this garbage.

I really should take the advice of wise posters and not feed the trolls. They hate the school and nothing will ever change that. Liberty University COM will graduate excellent physicians and they will go on to accomplish great things, the school will expand and improve, but still they will go on hating. I need to rise above the hate.

It is not about hate and I am not a troll. Trying to ignore the legitimate concerns that posters have about this school and brushing them off as hate bears close resemblance to the willful ignorance of the bigoted religious fundamentalists that founded this school.

I am not a troll. I do not hate the students or even the faculty of the medical school. I care about my future profession as a medical student, and I do not want the osteopathic profession associated with such religious fundamentalism. Medicine is an EMPIRICAL SCIENCE, and has no place being taught at a school with its own creationist museum. Are you okay with being taught at a school whose administration and board actively opposes the availability of birth control to your future patients or that believes that your future LGBT patients do not deserve the same rights as everyone else?

Try to recognize the legitimacy of our concerns.

Just because the school's ideology on birth control doesn't match up with yours gives you no reason to hate on the institution.

And since when does not agreeing with someone's lifestyle choice equate to a loss of respect? I don't agree with people smoking, but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat them as any less of a person.

Get over yourself and don't apply. Seriously, sometimes it is nice to have a conservative stance on things.

Where are you getting this from? Can you post a source?

In no way did I imply that I would treat a religious person or someone with alternative views to my own with less respect as a human being. However, medical schools are not people, they are academic institutions and deserve scrutiny to insure that they are teaching empirical medicine.

Birth control is something that I see as a necessity for the lives of many of my future patients and I take it as a personal responsibility to fight any efforts by companies and lobbying groups to take it away from them. This is currently the case with several companies and lobbying groups that believe employers should not have to provide their employees with birth control. And before you say allowing employers to not provide it is not removing it from patients, for many poor americans in this country it is the equivalent of taking it away from them because they cannot otherwise afford medical care.

Sure...http://www.americanbar.org/content/...s-v3/13-354-13-356_amcu_lulc.authcheckdam.pdf

LU is suing over Obamacare and believes the employers shouldn't have to provide birth control to their employees.

Recently interviewed here. Not going to get involved with @soitgoes32 or any other poster's agenda.

PM me if you'd like my input.

I believe the first deposit of $500 is due before December 15th. They adhere to all the AACOMAS deadlines. Second deposit is $1,500. Both non-refundable. Although, a current student may be able to give a better explanation than myself haha

So is the $500 due right away and the $1500 is due on December 15th? Or is the $500 due December 15th and the $1500 is due later?

The 500 dollars are due 30 days post-acceptance (when they call you to let you know you where accepted they will also tell you the 30-day deadline by which you must pay the 500 dollars). For example, if they called you today, you would have until Sept 19th or so to pay 500 dollars. Then, you must dish out 1500 by December 15th to keep your spot on the school.

Quiet interesting to read the entire thread while chewing on skittles 😛
I am currently working on my secondary application and I would like to how if the school accepts letters of recommendation via interfolio?
I received AACOMAS fee waiver, should I enter zero on the payment page?

I was pretty confused about the whole letter thing too, but I called them and they said you can send via interfolio. I sent them via the electronic method and two days later I had an interview invite.

I have no idea about the fee waiver. I guess I got too many clams, so no fee waver for me. But with a couple grand on my credit card already I sure could have used one.

I am impressed you read the whole thread, but with a package of skittles to combat the negativity I could see how you could handle it all in one sitting. Skittles are delicious!

Still waiting on my secondary application. I would like to get started on the essays while waiting though. I would really appreciate if someone could post the essay questions on here. Thanks!

Is Richmond the closest major airport? I'm possibly flying from California or from Atlanta since I have an interview at ACOM for 9/5.

I got a complete package from priceline for $760 flying into Richmond (includes hotel and car rental). I couldn't find anything this good flying into Lynchburg, but I probably should have checked Roanoke and Charlottesville.

Just the deferred status today...email said I will be contacted if there is an opening for interview. Sad!

Signed up for Monday, 9/8. PM me if you are interested in sharing a room sunday evening.

My buddy got that e-mail the other day. I am still waiting to hear back on mine, not sure if my DO submitted LOR yet...
I was surprised because his GPA stats were higher than last years median and his MCAT was only 1 point below..
The rest of his app is solid, so maybe because it is still early in the cycle?
Dont let it discourage you. I'm sure they are only interviewing the highest stats now. If you dont mind me asking, what are your stats?
It is probably just a formality and nothing against you personally.
If they didn't like you, they would have rejected you from the bat and not invited you for a secondary.
Keep your head up!

Thanks for the kind words! My GPA is 3.5 and 26 MCAT, Oregon resident.

The wait list moved all the way up through the week before orientation. Don't feel discouraged

Do they email when our application is complete and is under review?

I called admissions yesterday to ask them about the fee-waiver.

Me: Hi, this is [my name]. I am working on my secondary application for LUCOM. I received a fee waiver from AACOMAS and I would like to know if I am applicable for LUCOM secondary application fee waiver.
Lady: Yes, we have a list of students who were approved for AACOMAS fee waiver
Me: Oh ok, should I just skip the payment page or should I enter zero for payment. Or do I need to pay and get refunded later on?
Lady: We only send secondary applications to a selected pool of applicants. You will receive an email with invitation to the fill secondary if you qualify
Me: Yes, and I have received an invitation for secondary already.
Lady: Ok then go ahead and fill it out
Me: (WTF, in my head) umm okay but how do I go about the fee waiver ?
Lady: click on the link to fill secondary application and you will be directed to our website
Me: ok then thanks!

Ok seriously any suggestions on how to go about the fee waiver. lol?
