Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got an email yesterday since it took forever for my application to be verified. I am curious how long after you receive the email that they will review your application that they invite you or reject you for a secondary. This actually is my dream school and this will be the one school I will be super sad about if I don't even have a chance at a secondary. I have many ties to Indiana but none that show on my primary since they only ask what degrees your parents earned and not where these degrees are from 🙁

I hope they really look at the candidate overall and not just stats to the secondary cut.

The portal has been updated for applicants placed on the wait list.

Regards,
MU-COM Admissions

Im actually kind of confused where the confusion is. Yes, this is late in the cycle, but Im sure you already know this.

But, yes, send your letters. Send them now and also contact the school (call or email).

Obviously you cant get in unless you apply...and if you dont get in this year, try try again.

good luck👍

Pretty sure I remember them telling us that numbers are the first cut for the secondary. SO once you make it through that cut, you are able to spend two responses about Why Indiana and Why Marian in the secondary. Their requirements are on their website, for mcat and gpa I believe. I actually appreciate when schools screen for a secondary, its not helpful for me or the school if I have no shot getting in and waste $ and time doing a fruitless secondary app.

Best of luck!

What are the cuts? 3.2 science and cumulative and 24 MCAT?

No they have to be lower. I know people accepted with 23s. Also, my sGPA is lower than a 3.2 and I have been accepted. Maybe it's subjective?

I liked this explaination from their website:

What is the expected average GPA of the DO class entering 2013?

Since MU-COM has not yet enrolled any students, we cannot provide any profile data for our college of osteopathic medicine.

However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical school reveals an overall mean GPA of 3.48. For this group, the mean GPA in science is 3.36 and non-science 3.58. We anticipate similar numbers for our entering class in 2013. If your GPA is below 3.3, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive. Graduate work with demonstrated high success in biomedical science would positively influence the admissions committee

Since MU-COM has not yet enrolled any students, we cannot provide any profile data for our college of osteopathic medicine.

However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical schools reports a mean Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score of 26.51, calculated from a total of 8.66 verbal, 9.33 biological science, and 8.52 physical science. If your MCAT score is below 25, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive.

**remember, they are looking for more than numbers and if you read a little earlier in this thread, there have been people with great numbers who were rejected. These minimum suggestions 3.3GPA and 25MCAT not a guarantee, as Im sure you know. Also, its getting more competitive as time goes on in the cycle

Also does anyone else remember dean evans telling us about how we have access to all lecture notes for 4 years? And we can utilize a search function like "fractures" and find all the relevant lecture material? Or was I just dreaming, interview day was a whizzing train.

this is true...though not totally developed yet (then), this should be up and running by the time we begin. Also, I hear that the UI will be similar to the portal, which is a great thing since its so clear and user friendly. This is a big potential bonus.

Not dreaming. I heard that too

+1 I LOVE this. I actually can't believe more schools don't do this. Having access to material like that for 4 years just seems so beneficial to the students!

Marian has got to deliver the nicest acceptance calls in the medical school universe! Has anyone found out anything new regarding the curriculum that they would care to share?

And, moreover, does anyone care to take on the question of how they feel Marian might compare to a more established school like DMU? I know that "DMU vs. Marian" is ultimately a personal/subjective comparison but, despite that, I am hoping to gain some additional perspective and insight from the lovely men and women of SDN. 🙂 I want to make sure that there are not important decision factors I am offhandedly neglecting.

Thank you!

I'll PM you!

I KNOW, right?! I really get the feeling they're trying to establish good relationships with students right from the start 👍 🙂

Do you guys think that they care what your major is if it is a non science? I read on the website that they want tons of science classes, but if we have just the pre recs, should we be OK? Were there any non science majors at the interview day?

I have a bachelors in non-science, but i also have a masters in science...so maybe i don't count 😕 i don't see why it should matter if u have taken the necessary science courses.

All med schools LOVE non science majors, IF they have done well in the pre-requisite sciences.

I'd say, as long as you did well in your basics and some upper level sciences, you'll have the advantage of standing out and being well rounded.

Alas, there is hope! I have a non-science BA and non-science MA. I did, however, take Biochemistry and Cellular Biology in addition to the prerequisite courses. I also heavily tutored in the sciences and was able to secure a hefty chunk of clinical research experience.

It is all about balance, right? Medicine is as much a humanitarian art as it is a science. Just be ready to prove, given your academic and extracurricular experiences, that you are willing to take up the science side of the equation as well. You can prove this with your research experience, MCAT score, or by taking additional science courses...

I agree 100 percent with the comment above me. There isn't any one thin medical schools are looking for, or a specific pie chart or equation for who they let in. Show commitment, leadership and succes in your endeavors. It's the balance that is a challenge, but gives a person a well rounded application. Do the non science major but also perform well in the pre-reqs and show your up for the challenge and squeeze in one or two upper level bio

Curriculum details will be added to the portal for admits on Friday.

Good luck to everybody waiting to hear something today, you shouldn't have to wait to much longer. 🙂 I just wanted to say in response to some of your earlier posts about minimum requirements and such that I am definitely an underdog in this cycle but many schools look at more than just the numbers, trust me that I am living proof. The supplemental application and the interview are their ways of finding out who you are, make it count! I wouldn't hesitate sending letters of intent to MU-COM staff to show them how bad you want to make this school the best DO school in the US next year!!!

Just FYI, the facebook page for MU-COM in general has put up some bio's of the new staff which can be found at:

Please join our MU-COM Class of 2017 facebook page when you get your acceptance 🙂 We share important information when we get it and some of our professors have joined also. Sometimes they share their opinions or knowledge on subjects we talk about.

MU-COM staff occasionally posts things in the MU-COM accepted thread in the medical forum here on SDN for the accepted students, so make sure you check it regularly.

Hope everybody has a great weekend😀

I vote prindlks class president, lol. Way to go with all the good info!

I had already nominated DrMeows... looks like a race between prindlks and Dr Meows. Lol.

Yes, good stuff on the facebook links. 👍

True story woman! And you're one of the only people who knows me by my real name 😛 we would work well together! 😎

It's official then, prindlks and dr. Meows will run for office and we may or may not have to flip a coin to see who will be VP... Lol

Now the only question is, when will the update come...

😴

patience has not been a virtue of mine lately 😉

I'm assuming not until late afternoon, since that's when all of the calls/emails/other portal updates have occurred.

And I totally understand about patience 😉

Has anyone seen the curriculum updates on the portal yet?

The curriculum update is done ... just waiting for it to be uploaded to the portal. Sorry everyone. Still hopeful for this weekend ... Monday at the latest.
