Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
DrMeows, the Monon Trail & Canal Walk are awesome! There's also the Indy Zoo just west of downtown. I love the outdoor stuff in Indy. But if you want to get away from the city, Brown County is awesome! It's southwest of Indy, toward Bloomington.

Thank you for sharing 🙂 Hopefully I'll figure out what Brown County is once I move there! 😳

Brown County is the land of antiques, fudge, and socks (as my family likes to call it) They have a cool sock store with sports teams and anything you can imagine...even cats!). I drive through Nashville on my way to Bloomington and it's a really cute little town! Definitely worth a visit on a free afternoon 🙂

Hello friends!
Here's an update I received from a student who interviewed yesterday:

107 offers have been given out, 20 have paid seat deposits
There will be options for students to do 3rd and 4th year rotations in Indianapolis, thereby allowing students to live at the same place if so desired
35 anatomy stations, 45 OMM stations where students work in pairs
The hospital network has expanded to 8,000 beds.
The building is 65% done.
🙂

While in the ballpark, some of the numbers with respect to offers and deposits are not entirely accurate.

It really says something great about MU-COM that you have a tangible presence on this forum. Thank you!

Thanks for the update, Braun7713...lots of offers made up to this point.
I interviewed on the 16th and my application was not reviewed yet. I guess they have lots of interviewees to review and they don't get through all the files every Thursday when they meet. I will probably have to put down the deposit for my other acceptance as I am not sure what they will decide on me this coming Thursday or maybe...the next one? I do not know for how long they will postpone the review process on my file. December the 14th deadline is approaching really quick and I have to make a decision; I am not rich and have a family to support as well and can't afford to make multiple deposits. I really loved MU-COM and felt home on my interview day, I think it is an amazing school with so much potential and opportunity.
Thanks for being here for me SDN-ers and sorry for my whining 😳,...ughh, this is going to be a really hard decision to make...I wanted really badly to attend here 🙁

Sorry for the delay, but decisions for the remaining interviewees from the 16th and 17th will be made first on Thursday, December 6th. As a matter of fact, we are having a special (early) meeting just to catch up.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what the Male to Female ratio is? Anyone know this?

Brown County for the hiking, not the trinket shops!! Geez! 😉 and I recommend Abbey Inn for romantic weekend getaways!

To MU COM,

On the selection process tab on the webpage there is an error which states, "* If an advisor or committee is not available, a little from another science professor will be accepted as a substitute" (obviously this is suppose to say letter).

Cheers
P.S. send me a secondary

***On a completely unrelated note, I remember Dr. Evans speaking about working to establish some residency programs in IN. Does anyone know specific areas of medicine MU-COM is trying to establish programs in? Are they all in primary care or are they looking to establish programs in other areas of medicine as well (surgery,EM, etc)? December 14th is rapidly approaching so just trying to get all of the details out on the table.

MU-COM UPDATE RE: NEW RESIDENCIES

MU-COM is currently working with many of our partner hospitals to develop new and expanded residencies. Work is in the early development stages with the following hospitals: St. Vincent Carmel hospital, Community Westview, Community East, Good Samaritan in Vincennes, St. Mary's in Evansville, Lutheran in Ft. Wayne and even more.

Ideas have included IM, FM, OB, Neuromuscular Medicine (NMM-manipulation), general surgery, psychiatry, and a trauma fellowship. St. Vincent started a new surgery program this year, and Community looks like they will start the psychiatry residency in the next year or two.

While nothing has been finalized yet, expansions in existing programs are being worked on in all residencies in the St. Vincent system and with Westview and Community Health.

In addition, with all AOA programs transitioning to ACGME in 2015, some details still need to be worked out in dual-certified programs and AOA-only programs. Ultimately these changes will be much friendlier to students since there will be only one match, the standards will be under one umbrella, and equality of MD and DO students will be codified so that the playing field will be level for both students and faculty.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what the Male to Female ratio is? Anyone know this?

While it is still early in the admissions cycle, here are some preliminary stats:

All applicants to MU-COM
53% male
47% female

Applicants admitted to MU-COM
53% female
47% male

In closing, MU-COM is committed to enrolling a diverse inaugural class.

Thanks you everyone for the feedback. It was all very helpful and spot on! I had my interview yesterday and really liked the MMI format. I am very much looking forward to hearing back from MU-COM!

Crossing my fingers for you! :xf: 👍

Hey guys,

I am an OOS student with a 3.1 gpa and a 29 MCAT. Would it make sense for me to apply? I have several hundred hours of volunteering and a strong letter from a doctor who I shadowed.

There is a question on the secondary that asks if you are interested in practicing medicine in Indiana and why. I think if you can honestly answer that question then you should apply; although there is some rumor that unless your Master's working trumps your below 3.2 GPA then you would be denied a secondary, but I don't know if there is truth to that.

There's no knowing if you don't apply 🙂 Your MCAT is slightly higher than mine and gpa slightly lower and I was accepted as an OOS student. It seems like midwest regions are trumping other regions for the most part too, but I'm not sure where you're from. No harm in sending a primary in to see! 👍

They do have cutoff points, such as 3.0 GPA, so Im sure plenty of people have been denied a secondary. 🙂

Good luck to you!

Thank you! I received my secondary this morning, so that was a great way to wake up. I'll be submitting by the end of the day. I've been really impressed by the school so far so fingers crossed!

Does anyone know if MU-COM will substitute orgo 2 for biochemistry? I know a lot of medical schools don't say it on their website, but when I've called, most of them have said they would. Maybe the admissions could answer this question🙂

Happy to answer:

MU-COM will not substitute orgo 2 for biochemistry. It is important to note that there is NOT a biochemistry prerequisite though.

😀

yes, that would be the key point...

yeah, I guess I'm taking orgo 2, biochemistry wasn't really all that hard though(the usual vast amount of information to know with every biology course) oooh well...

Enjoy the course! And good luck this cycle... (I didn't see if you interviewed here yet or not, but good luck either way)

Med schools want you to suffer through orgo to show you really want to go into medicine .

Go have fun with the benzene ring like the rest of us 😉.

For those of you who interviewed recently, how long did it take after the interview to hear back about any decision? Is it taking longer at this point in the cycle?

This PS part made me laugh, nice touch lol🙁

Like the person before me just said you usually hear in a week...however it looks like the Thanksgiving holiday set them back for recent interviewees but they will be catching up this week....

Here it is from MU-COM:

I guess its possible they may be further delayed during winter break?

Possible, but I'm guessing not. Looks like they are interviewing the end of December (I saw someone on here with a December 28th interview I think?) so they will be in the office. They review files on Thursdays and none of the next holidays fall on a Thursday (at least Christmas doesn't 😳). It makes sense Thanksgiving set them back because that's on a Thursday.

It would be great if they can establish an EM program

Is anyone else having the hardest time making a hotel reservation for the weekend of January 18th to 20th? My interview is Jan 19th and apparently there is a HUGE cheer leading competition and pretty much all the hotels in the area are booked. Any suggustions?

Check just south of town, around Southport or Greenwood.

Thanks, I found something near the airport. I was hoping to stay downtown but I'm just happy to finally find something!

I don't blame you for wanting to stay close! I know one of the hotels near IUPUI is being converted to student dorms, so there's another hotel that wouldn't be available.

i got a secondary real quick after i posted this, wierd. Big brother is watching!

👍 I was really hoping to see that as well.

Anyone know how the relationship is between MU-COM and IU health?

IU has some affiliation with all of the hospitals listed by MU-COM (some more than others--and includes Westview); one of the IU DOs I shadowed in FM said that she was in talks about opening up some rotation slots for MU-COM students. And if the IU neuro profs are going to go out to MU-COM, I'd assume the relationship is at least friendly.

+1 actually  looks like there's a lot of us!

I was starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel in regards to making my decision to go here but then seeing the projected residency list made me pause for a moment...I was really hoping they would have had some plans to include some "other" specialties that would be affiliated with their program. A lot of the other top DO schools have options, in house, that are outside of primary care.

To be fair, most of the students will choose to go Primary Care, so those will always be the first slots to open.

While it is a consideration for me as well, as long as they give ample leeway for audition rotations during our elective year(s), then specializing should be too big of a problem.

But, if they threw in Ortho Surgery, I wouldn't complain 😉
