Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
While it is a consideration for me as well, as long as they give ample leeway for audition rotations during our elective year(s), then specializing should be too big of a problem.

I agree 👍 Wasn't gonna be a deciding factor for me either. Just a type of residency I may be interested in! 😀

Thats good 🙂

It is a deciding factor for me, but Im finding out that its not a deal breaker or (deal maker) on its own for me.

To be fair, most of the students will choose to go Primary Care, so those will always be the first slots to open.

But, if they threw in Ortho Surgery, I wouldn't complain 😉

Yup, I agree with this as well. I was just saying, having visited other new schools and seeing their plans to create "in house" residency programs in various areas besides primary care, and since I am starting to analyze the most specific details between schools which I am deciding, MU-COM's response caused me to alter my pros and cons list a bit.

Thats good 🙂

I also agree with this....as it isn't a deal maker/breaker...it is definitely something I am taking into consideration along with all of the other factors!

We were told that during the meeting last Thursday (so for the Nov. 16/17 group?) they had some computer/technical problems and couldn't make any decisions after only meeting a couple hours. Hang in there and hopefully you'll get a call in two days! 🙂

sorry, that's what I meant by deciding factor --> not a deal breaker 👍

Agreed on all fronts

👍

I'm sure MU-COM will respond to some of the concerns here and maybe open up those avenues for interested students but I can't complain - aiming to be a OB 😉

It would be great if they can establish an EM program

Definintely need an EM program locally, if possible. Again, echoing others, not a deal breaker, but I would love the opportunity to stay near any connections we might make in our 3rd and 4th years.

In a totally separate notion: 😎
I just received a Littman Cardio II as a gift from the ER Medical Director, Dr. Pierog, and his wife Linda, while here at work today. They told me to consider it a gift for my future, and said that they couldn't be more proud of me. So excited!!

Totally wearing it around for the rest of my shift, feeling totally natural 😀

They have responded...this is just discussion in response to what they have presented. If you look earlier in the thread, they listed their general plans for new GME, as well as current, programs.

🙂

I just thought that since there is so much discussion about what new possibilities we would like, there may be some additional announcements to ease some concerns about future residency options. I would hate for people to choose a diff school based on prelim ideas for residency. 🙂

FYI, your follow-up questions to our residency post are fair and reasonable. Let us get you some more information.

Ah, I see. I thought you may had missed the earlier part of the conversation...

Glad to see that your predictions are on target: More info to come...always a welcome statement!!

MU-COM Admissions

Wow, that's great!!! Has anyone ever seen a school so dedicated to answering/looking into their prospective students concerns so quickly?!?!

It makes me feel very confident in my choice 🙂

Anyone know anything about chances of acceptance for those interviewed?

IU has some affiliation with all of the hospitals listed by MU-COM (some more than others--and includes Westview); one of the IU DOs I shadowed in FM said that she was in talks about opening up some rotation slots for MU-COM students. And if the IU neuro profs are going to go out to MU-COM, I'd assume the relationship is at least friendly.

From how I understood it while living in Indy; the two major Healthcare systems are IU Health and St. Vincents, who essentially compete with each other. St. V's wanted to have Marian exclusively at one point, but I think they really want a medical school affiliated with them. IU Health obviously has all the IU students rotating through, so it would be nice to have the ability to rotate alongside of them. St. V's has a very large network and a great reputation in the Midwest. The rotation sites Marian will offer should be better than the majority of other DO schools. Especially since these hospitals are so used to having IU students rotate through.

But, if they threw in Ortho Surgery, I wouldn't complain 😉

hahaha Sherlock, the ortho gunner. I knew it from the moment I saw your avatar...

I think this will be a pretty important factor since the reputation of our students and program are unknown - other than our board scores and possible audition rotations.
Marian has the opportunity to open spots for us in already established well known residency programs....not just small community programs like most other DO schools. Lets just hope everything pans out - we could have an incredible opportunity here

I think it really comes down to how one performs in the MMI interview. From what I have gathered, this school only invites people they are highly interested in to interview in the first place...so the interview holds serious weight in the road to acceptance. Others might want to add to this, but this is just my personal take on it.

Not sure if enjoying orthopedic surgery constitutes a gunner 😉

Also, why does Sherlock remind you of ortho?

Other than that, I liked your post about the hospital systems in Indy, thanks for the info.

Also, my name is HalfListic here, pleased to meet you HDaddyDollarz. 🙂

I second this post!

Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that there were technical issues that week, and that there would be decisions for those interviewed on the 16th and 17th this Thursday. Hang on, and keep pushing forward 👍.

Thanks for your input!! 🙂

Does anyone know about rotation sites in other places besides Indy? Is it just for 3rd and 4rth year, or are they opening up residencies in all the hospitals they mentioned?

I realize nothing is finalized yet, but would be a good thing to know about away rotations in the state if opportunities present themselves. Also, any hope there might be ENT or specialty residencies?

St. V's has hospitals all over the state; you usually have to apply for away rotations at other schools or in other states for years 3 and 4.

Hahaha someone responded to me on SDN once with my real name, it almost gave me a heart attack!! I'll be sure to keep your secret now that i know who you are 😉 😛

Haha, exactly! ...thanks Meows! 😉

My bad....meant no harm....won't happen again. Sorry.

I think everyone on here just wants to stay as anonymous as possible, especially after what has happened to other SDNers for not being so. Just another neurotic trait all of us pre-meds have 😳

What has happened to others?

😱 when was this?

It was this cycle...but this sort of detracts from this school specific thread.(PM me if you'd like the full story) And, as long as you don't act too crazy, no one has to worry about it. Anonymity is more to keep your personal information personal, or at least under your control. 🙂

On a separate note, any one else looking forward to the next update...should be this week right??

Does anyone know how much class time per week MU-COM is planning? Also, is the curriculum traditional or systems based?

Thanks!

Anyone know if the grades are given as pass/fail or honors, high pass etc?

On a separate note, any one else looking forward to the next update...should be this week right??

Friday, likely. It will include info about MU, the campus environment, and on-campus graduate housing options.

How often are interview invites sent out, are they sent in batches?

How often are interview invites sent out, are they sent in batches?

I feel like it's fairly often. I think they say they like to get back to you within 2 weeks of being complete, so I'd expect to hear something one way or another within that time frame.

My interview is scheduled dec 14th. Does my deposit have to be in before then too?

No. You won't hear an admissions response until December 20th. I'm not sure what AACOMAS traffic guidelines are after the first deposit, you'll have to check! 🙂
