Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Which would only be updated next Tuesday afternoon, and then the schools would have to upload it, so that would take a few more days... I'd say just email it.

would you guys suggest doing this for fall grades as well? I was planning on having a transcript sent, but I figured I would probably take a screenshot of my grades and email it as well so they would have that info before my interview.

I had official transcripts mailed.

EDIT: This was after I was accepted though, since it was part of the enrollment agreement thing. If this is pre-acceptance or pre-interview, I'd probably send the official anyway, especially to AACOMAS. When I got my updated MCAT scores pre-interview, I sent the scores to AACOMAS and emailed the school(s) to let them know to expect them.

You already have an interview...I doubt that getting your new grades there asap (emailed screenshot) is going to change anything right now. No one will be looking at your grades at the actual interview....it is closed file. However, when you show up at the interview you could bring a physical copy of your grades with you for them to add to your file. That way, after the interview, when the committee meets to discuss your candidacy they will have it.

I'd listen to this wise, old, man

But seriously...this is great advice

Pay up HDaddy..😉

You got me...I figured they had everything when my interviewer brought up my undergrad/grad and major - he was looking at something on the laptop the whole time, figured it was my full app

Hi everyone.

Do you think they will make decisions regarding the individuals interviewing this weekend before Christmas or do you think the decisions for the 14th and 15th will not be made until after Christmas? Also, do they let you know their decision (accept, reject, wait list) by email for all three? Or do they mail them out?

Thanks!

I think decision for this weekend's interviews will be made before Christmas. I only think this because I know they are also doing interviews next weekend (I have a friend going in on the 21st 🙂 ), so therefore their office will not be closed yet and I don't see why they wouldn't be making decisions on the 20th

From what I have gathered by talking with other people and viewing this thread: acceptances are given out via phone call on Thursday afternoon/evening, waitlists are given out via phone call on Friday afternoon/evening, and rejected applicants are emailed (not sure of the day, but I believe that is also Friday). Hope this helps and good luck!! 👍

Great. Thank you Dr. Meows! That is a quick turnaround. I didn't know if they made decisions every Thursday or if they waited until they had a couple rounds complete and then made decisions on that whole group every couple of weeks. Thanks!

No problem! I know they try to make it so they make decisions on everyone within a week. However, I know in previous weeks some people had to wait two weeks because they didn't have enough time to review all of the interviewees. I'm pretty sure they caught up on that though by having like a 6 am meeting or something crazy like that one Thursday! I hope they're all caught up for you 😀

I interviewed the weekend after they got behind and got a call the following Thursday. So I'm pretty sure they're all caught up now! Also, at the interview they should tell people when they can expect decisions. Good luck!

Hope ya'll got around to throwing down your deposits today. Wouldn't want to miss your opportunity to be where the magic is happening!

Interviewed here today and the school instantly became my number one choice of schools. Really hoping they liked me as much as I liked them so I can join you all next year!

Interviewed here on Friday! Marian seems to have some real promise as a brand new school, but I'm still iffy about the possibility of being a brand new 'guinea pig' class so to say. Should hear in a week about acceptances though, so we'll see!

Does anyone know how the wait list works? I understand they rank people into the four quartiles, but if you are in the middle or last quartile and they keep adding people to the list wouldn't that make you go further down the list and decrease your chances of getting an offer for acceptance? And does anyone know when the next time they will be reviewing the list?

Just received an email - said my application on hold! What does that mean and do I still have a shot?

Usually there is a reason stated in the email. If not, you might want to send an email asking for specifics and determine if it's something that can be rectified during this cycle.

It would seem that if someone is lower on the list they would be moved even lower if other students are added at a higher status. You could email the admissions office, and they could probably tell you more definitively.

+1 to this statement. Also i believe someone told me that admissions said they'd let you know if your tier changed? Idk I could just be making that up though...

That is correct... If there is any change they let you know!

I think it means that they decided to not extend you an interview at this time, but they are still potentially interested in your candidacy. If there isn't a specific reason listed (which it doesn't sound like there was) just give them a ring/email as was mentioned before and see if there is anything you can do to move yourself into a better position for getting an interview. I assume they periodically review folks that are on hold, so continue to update them if anything new develops that could potentially benefit your file.

I do know a few other people that this happened to at other schools...some were eventually rejected, some are still waiting and some eventually received interview invites. Seems the people who stayed active and in contact with the school had the most success.

Good luck!

Hello friends!
Here's an update I received from a student who interviewed yesterday:

107 offers have been given out, 20 have paid seat deposits
There will be options for students to do 3rd and 4th year rotations in Indianapolis, thereby allowing students to live at the same place if so desired
35 anatomy stations, 45 OMM stations where students work in pairs
The hospital network has expanded to 8,000 beds.
The building is 65% done.
🙂

Is there any update to these numbers? I'm assuming "offers" = "acceptance." People have said on this forum that Marian will stop recruiting once they offer seats to 150 students. If true, it means competition will be fierce for those of us interviewing in January!

I think you'll be ok. There were probably several that declined their acceptances a few days ago.

Since offers do not equate to seats being filled, I do not think that is entirely accurate. They may give out 150 offers, 50 may pay their seat deposit and the other 100 may attend elsewhere... see what I mean? I'm sure they will be giving out many more acceptances. 🙂 If you interview in January don't give up hope yet! Good luck! 👍

I love the school! But does anyone else also wishes that MU COM mascot/logo is more gender neutral?

i had the same thought!

i was thinking that a more appropriate logo would be the rod of asclepius with a knight's sword in place of the rod.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_of_asclepius

also, the cane of caduceus is often misused as the logo for medicine because of the insistence of a single medical officer in 1902.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caduceus#Misuse_as_symbol_of_medicine

even sdn is using the wrong logo in the notices box at the top of the page!

While I agree that asclepius is more accurate...the Caduceus is now commonly accepted, even though its openly understood that it once stood for commerce, or something. Even traditional school, like Harvard, use both the Caduceus and the r.o. Asclepius, for their med school.

Also, in the accepted students thread, MUCOM made it known that Dr Knightro is just used for spirit gear, and that official COM logo would be different. Hopefully they incorporate the Marian University seals...theyre pretty cool:

Swoon...
I cannot express how much of a crush I have on this school and all the ppl on sdn who are interested in it.

This looks really nice and professional. As far as I know this is the university's official seal, but it says University instead of College since that changed in 2009. (AND it is gender neutral 😀)

This, or something similar would look great on the white coats to represent the University... since we were talking about white coats in the accepted thread!

Hi Guys

New to SDN.

I was wondering if anyone could give any tips on preparing for the MMI interview.

Thanks in advance

I think you should take some time to read through the pages on this thread. A lot of people had this same question and many people responded 🙂 if you want my opinion, there is no real way to prepare (unfortunately). The MMI gives you a chance to show both your critical thinking process and your personality though: things you can't really fake or prepare. Just be yourself and things should be fine! 👍

Definitely read through this thread. Lots of tips. My advice: be confident in yourself. They just want to get to know who you really are. Good luck! 👍

+1 Cant wait too see what the white coats will look like. The university seal or the MUCOM seal (have they created this yet?) would look pretty sharp on the white coats. I just hope our names are embroidered on them instead of having name tags 😎

I interview next friday and I booked a flight out of indianapolis at 8pm...is that a decent timing? Or will I be missing out on "extra activities"?

I should mention that I am scheduled to interview with cohort 3...Thanks!

I think you should be fine. My day ended at like 4:30 (though i was a cohort 1-er, they seemed to have different cohorts doing different things at the same time once all 3 were there). Good luck next week!! :xf:

Thank you! If you don't mind me asking, what time did cohort 1 start? I start at 1:30 for cohort 3 which is why I was worrying initially lol 😛

I was in cohort 2 and finished around 5-5:30, good luck with your interview!

Cohort 3 on Fridays ends around 6-6:15 PM, if we are running on time.

Good luck to everyone who interviewed last Friday and Saturday! I think calls go out tomorrow or Friday. Hope I get the chance to join you all next year!
