Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got an e-mail... which was apparently sent "7 hours ago" according to gmail.. but it just showed up in my inbox.. it's not a secondary invite, but it just says this:

I am pleased to acknowledge receipt of your application for admission. Within the next few weeks, a member of our committee will render a decision on the minimum requirements for admission. At that time, you may receive an invitation to complete a supplemental application, which could be followed by an invitation to interview.

Same.😀...gmail.

If I had to venture a guess like some other people have, I would guess they would screen:

cGPA 3.0 sGPA 3.2 MCAT: 24

Maybe those might be a little high, but they definitely seem to want to screen high.

You also have to realize that a lot of in state students with middle of the road stats: 3.4-5 28 and lower, will deffinantly apply here if they don't get into IU. I can see their stats being very high.

anyone get a secondary yet, I got the same email.

Ditto. And I agree with GypsyHummus. IU tends to waitlist or reject those with under a 30 MCAT, so there are probably quite a few IS students with 27-29's that will apply to Marian as well.

Well hopefully they look at the whole candidate and stick to the "GPA and the interview are considered of most importance" blurb they have stated on their website.😀

The first mention of even receiving this AACOMAS acknowledgement letter was yesterday. I haven't heard of any secondaries yet.

Just applied to this school. The downside of its provisional accrediation and lack of established connections is more than made up by its impressive mission statement and future potential. I especially appreciation the focus on collaboration between nursing and medical students. I've worked in a hospital for almost 11 months now and I'm still suprised at the lack of harmony between team members. As Dr. Gawande says, we need to train pit crews -- not cowboys -- and this is a step in the right direction.

Just curious, how does everyone feel about possibly going to a brand new school?

I'm very concerned about it. All programs invariably have kinks. I'm not sure how I feel about being the test case. There is no match history or COMLEX scores to go off of. This could, however, work in our advantage as they definitely have a need to prove something by offering exceptional student support.

still waiting on secondary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, and probably will continue to wait for a few more weeks, according to their email.

You're right. I had to read over the email to see what you were talking about. They will decide minimum requirements in the next few weeks. Yikes! More waiting 🙄

Just got the secondary, does anyone know if they did any advanced screening for it?

Shoot, I am really not having luck with getting secondaries today. Was hoping for Marian and KCUMB today. Maybe it is just because my Marian app released on 7/26.

For the questions, how much are ou guys writing? Are we only supposed to write a few sentences?

I want to assume they did some screening due to the AACOMAS acknowledgement email they sent out earlier saying the adcom was figuring out the minimum requirements for admission.

But who knows...

I wonder how long it'll be until interview invites go out (can you tell I'm a little antsy over here :scared: lol). Hopefully sometime within the next month 🙂

According to the email they sent, yes they pre-screened. I emailed them awhile back before they even contacted us to ask a few questions and the person told me I would not be able to submit a secondary unless I passed initial screening.

So they require 3 letters of recommendation: one from a pre-medical advisor or committee, one from a science faculty member, one from a physician (DO or MD). If I didn't have a pre-medical advisor or pre-medical committee, does anyone know if another science faculty member could be used instead? Just asking if anyone already knew. If not I'll just email them. Thanks 🙂

Would the admissions Committee accept a letter from one of my professors in lieu of an evaluation from a premedical advisor/committee?

In the absence of a letter from a pre-med advisor or committee, we will consider the faculty letters. However, it is strongly recommended that you consider offering a biology professor's evaluation as part of the packet. Since biology is the most relevant of the sciences to medicine, assessment from a biology professor regarding your ability to handle medical school level work would be of great value.

Additionally, make sure that your application explains the absence of a pre-med advisor recommendation.

From my quote above when I emailed them and asked, the person said you can send a science letter in place of the committee letter and said a biology letter would be ideal.

I'm not even verified yet, but I did apply to Marian... is there a place on the secondary to explain the absence of said letter?

there is a spot that asks if you had premed advisor on secondary.

Several short questions: list/explain research, why MU-COM, what specialty interests you most and why, list shadowing experience, would you want to practice in IN and why. Pretty short.

Okay I feel dumb. I swear I looked on the website. Ah well. Thank you!

I would love to go here, did anyone get a secondary with a science gpa lower than 3.2?

I did - my sGPA is a 3.13 and cGPA is a 3.23 (you can look at my stats on my MDapps). Did they state 3.2 as their designated cutoff? If so, maybe my MCAT and recent master's degree helped? 😕

What was your mcat? Anybody receive a secondary with a 24 or any 6's in their subsections?

Uh oh...did they not prescreen and now we are all going to drop 100 bucks to get rejected anyhow...? They sure made it seem like they screened....

Can any current student comment on the hospital connections/clerkships associated with Marian?

I would think in a big city, they would have a decent sized hospital, but just wanted to see what is available...

Marian is a new school, so there are no current medical students there; however, they have partnered with Community and St. Vincent's, which are huge networks in Indianapolis and across the state of Indiana. It looks to be a promising program.

Oh, thanks baby doc...I thought I saw a 2010 class date for them, but maybe that was a founding date.

So, is there a 2012 class coming in now, or is 2013 the first class?

Thanks for the info in any case...not a bad looking school at all.

I didn't think I was THAT bad of an applicant! 🙁 geeze!

Yes your Masters Degree helped. This is from the website:

What is the expected average GPA of the DO class entering 2013?

Since MU-COM has not yet enrolled any students, we cannot provide any profile data for our college of osteopathic medicine.
However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical school reveals an overall mean GPA of 3.48. For this group, the mean GPA in science is 3.36 and non-science 3.58. We anticipate similar numbers for our entering class in 2013. If your GPA is below 3.3, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive. Graduate work with demonstrated high success in biomedical science would positively influence the admissions committee.

Also, they never said a 3.2 was the cut-off: This is also from the website:

To be considered a competitive applicant, candidates should have achieved at least a 3.20 science and cumulative grade point average, on a 4.00 scale.
The minimum overall GPA for acceptance is 3.00 in the last 120 hours; however, students with a GPA less than 3.20 are rarely accepted.
The admissions process is competitive, and a higher grade point average (above 3.40) results in improved chances for acceptance. COMs place emphasis on the last 120 credit hours and on the science and required courses when choosing between competitive applicants. COMs also place emphasis on the applicant’s interview.

Also, there is no mcat cut-off of 24 according to this:

Applicants must submit scores from the MCAT. For the current admissions cycle, the college will accept the April MCAT administration from up to four years prior to the date of matriculation. A competitive MCAT score usually begins at 24; however the MCAT is weighed in connection with GPA and personal qualities. The overall GPA and the interview are considered of most importance.

if anyones curious, I asked and they said the promps should be 1-2 paragraphs long.
