Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the last essay: "Please share any other relevant information that you would like the MU-COM Admission Committee to know about you"...did anyone actually enter something in this field? I'm assuming you explain things that aren't already on your application, but any suugestions on how to go about this?

I wrote a short essay on my work with hospice patients, and how they led me to pursue osteopathy.

Since I had a committee letter, I included more information on something I had mentioned in my personal statement. Good luck!!

Anyone else that interviewed on Friday 10/12 not hear back yet? I thought we would know by today they said?

DrMeows, did you get a decision yet from MU-COM?

High-waitlisted unfortunately 🙁 🙁 extremely disappointed and wish i could be in the group of accepted people. I want to be a part of MU-COM very badly!

Hopefully the WL gets some action Dr. M. I'll stay positive and say I am pretty sure it will.😉

While I'm sure that sucks some of the fun out of it, I am confident being high wait-list at any school much less a new one is a good sign for you. Now you just need patience😉

I appreciate the kind words, and I really hope you are right 😳 😳

Heyy..when and how we're you notified of your position on the high waitlist? If you don't mind me asking.

Heyy..when and how we're you notified of your position on the high waitlist? If you don't mind me asking.

I received a phone call on Friday night (seemed like the accepted people received their phone calls on Thursday night). I don't know if that's the way it's always going to be done or if things were just running behind the first week. But the phone call was very nice and you are told what it is about your application that put you there, in addition to whether or not you are on the high, middle, or low waitlist.

What were your stats?

I will PM you. I took down my MDApps for the time being, I'd like to remain as anonymous as possible through this process 🙂

Did any one who interview on 10/13 hear anything back yet im still waiting to hear back

Got an ii for next month! I know the interview format is MMI. Are there any helpful tips?

Hi for everyone that is high waitlisted did you guys hear on friday night or did you get calls on other days to

From what I've heard with previous cycles, high-waitlisted has a super high chance of getting in! I think a school went through over 100 on their waitlist, and since Marian is accepting a fairly large first class, maybe they'd be pulling from the waitlist as early as Dec. 15th when some people pass the first deadline?? Keep us posted!!! If you don't mind, could you pm me your stats as well? I have an interview on nov. 30th. It's my first so far and I'm super nervous!🙁

I forgot what page it was but someone posted a link to a good article. If you can't find it PM me and I'll send it over to you or something.

They actually are going to start considering the waitlist as early as the end of October :scared: I'm not sure if that means they'll actually start pulling from it though. I hope so!! 😳 And I'll PM you 🙂

Congratulations to all those accepted! I wish luck to everybody who was put on the waitlist and all those who have yet to hear about an interview.

Please join our Facebook group when you are accepted and if plan to matriculate at Marian! 🙂

It seems like the only real negative thing about the school is the price then, from what everyone has said so far.

And I wouldn't even say the price. I think unless you're going to a public school or a LECOM, you're gonna get something > $40,000, ya know? And from the work they're putting into the school I think your money will be well spent. Just my own thoughts though 😳

Believe it or not, the mean cost for 1st year private D.O. schools for 2012-2013 is $42,186, so MU-COM is slightly lower than that.

Hi guys,
Just submitted everything today (AACOMAS and Letters).

cGPA: 3.15 (very high upward trend)
sGPA: 3.15 (very high upward trend)
MCAT: 29

2 years working full time at large corporation and 24 hours as a volunteer researcher per week
1 year of shadowing, patient interaction and surgery observation

What are my chances at this school? I am OOS but I really like the location and the fact that it is close to home!

I feel like it's hard for anyone to answer this, especially when you won't be getting a secondary turned in probably until December-ish or so 🙂eek🙂. However, I think your numbers are competitive enough for this school, especially your MCAT. And idk if I'm reading this right, but you're an OOS-er that still lives close to Indiana? While it seems like they like Indiana, I also think they like midwest in general if they can't get all Indiana students (my own speculation). In my interview group there were 3 people from Michigan, 1 from Ohio, 1 from Kentucky, 1 from Illinois and 1 from Indiana. Good luck to you! May I ask why you waited so long to turn in your primary?!

I agree with cat doctor

Anything is possible. Not bad stats, earlier in the cycle I would have said def but it may be too late. No harm in trying though. Good luck 🙂

From the MU-COM Website FAQ:

"What is the expected average GPA of the DO class entering 2013?

Since MU-COM has not yet enrolled any students, we cannot provide any profile data for our college of osteopathic medicine.

However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical school reveals an overall mean GPA of 3.48. For this group, the mean GPA in science is 3.36 and non-science 3.58. We anticipate similar numbers for our entering class in 2013. If your GPA is below 3.3, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive. Graduate work with demonstrated high success in biomedical science would positively influence the admissions committee.

What is the expected average MCAT score of the DO class entering 2013?

Since MU-COM has not yet enrolled any students, we cannot provide any profile data for our college of osteopathic medicine.

However, the national profile of the 2011 entering class for all osteopathic medical schools reports a mean Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score of 26.51, calculated from a total of 8.66 verbal, 9.33 biological science, and 8.52 physical science. If your MCAT score is below 25, then this would deserve attention, recommend improving it to become more competitive. "

Thanks for your quick reply! I waited because I took the absolute last day for the MCAT this cycle and I didn't get my score until Oct 11th. I'm actually originally from MI (Univerisity of Michigan) but I have been living in IL for the last three years. I've been busy at work due to the holiday season but I'm planning to take a 1-2 month long vacation to complete my secondaries (get them out as quickly as possible).

Just a question, why do you suppose I won't have my secondaries in until December? Not entirely familiar with the process of secondaries and/or how long it takes to complete them. Thanks!

It takes AACOMAS about a month to verify and release your app to schools then the school decides if they will send u a secondary. So it could be December or January

+1 to what FutureDO132169 said. One of my friends sent their primary in the first or second week of September and is STILL waiting to be verified/have their application sent to schools (I believe they are going on their 7th week). And after that, depending on the school, you get your secondary right away or not. I believe Marian has a pre-screening process so you won't get their secondary right away like other schools. Plus, once you're complete, tack on another 2 weeks to who knows how long to receive an II....which will most likely be scheduled for at least a month after that. I apologize, not to be a downer, but this process sucks in terms of waiting. Anything can happen though, so good luck to you!

oh, I see... 🙁 well, I hope the process goes quickly - how late are interviews offered and are my chances significantly decreased due to the "tardiness" of my application?

It's hard to say what someone's chances are ya know? I mean every school says your best chances are to get apps in June 1st (beginning of cycle). But good luck and hope the best for you!

Every school interviews and accepts into the spring though right? So it seems if anything, time is not going to be the deciding factor on his/her app.. more likely the lower GPA or non-Indiana status.

This is definitely a true statement. I think MU-COM is only interviewing into March (I think that's what I remember...) whereas there's some schools that interview into April or even May. And obviously there are going to be less spots available for people that interview that late in the cycle, as opposed to people who are interviewing right now. They've been interviewing for 3 weeks and have already interviewed 126 out of their projected 600-700 people (and it's still October!). I'd say, especially for this school, time seems to be pretty significant. I'm not saying you're wrong lol I'm just giving my opinion 🙂

Thanks DrMeows! I definitely appreciate the realistic answers (definitely not a downer) as to how long everything will take. I'll try my best and hopefully I'll be given an opportunity here. MU-COM is definitely one of my top choices and I hope to be proclaiming my acceptance here (in a couple months 🙂 ) Thanks everyone for your help!

No prob! I didn't want to come off as harsh. There's a lot of rude people on SDN and I try not to be one of them! 😳

I would never argue with the great Meows😉

And for only 162 spots! I wonder how many have been accepted thus far.

It's 162?! I thought it was 150. That larger number actually made me feel a little better 🙂

And I agree, I wonder too! If they're doing it systematically I would say since they're roughly 1/5 of the way through their interviews. maybe a little over 1/5 of the class size (somewhere between 30-50 would be my guess). But that is OBVIOUS speculation and in reality I have zero idea 👎 🙄

Quick question....should I have included my CV in the "other documents" tab in AACOMAS? I have some poster presentations and I'm not exactly sure where to put these....

Also, when do I submit my letters of recommendation and how many? (I have 2 MD, 1 PhD, and 1 Employer).

Ummm I would say that's probably the place to put them, however I didn't use this tab nor do I have any poster presentations so I might not be right lol, maybe someone else can give insight 😕

You submit LORs with your secondary application. Marian needs 1 pre-med advisor or committee letter (if you don't have one you can substitute an additional science professor), 1 science professor, and 1 DO or MD letter (but they recommend DO).

Do you not have any science faculty letters? Or is that what you mean by PhD (if you just did research with them, not class-time, I'm not sure if that counts). Plus here you would need 2 of them anyways. If you don't, I suggest trying to get some because you need that type of letter for a ton of schools.

The approved number is 150, then they area allowed to go 8% over that number because people drop out, die, etc. It really freaked me out when they told me they had gotten 2200 applications (and since I interviewed on the 5th they certainly have more than that now) and were doing 600 interviews for such a small number. With those odds, if we were selected randomly, there is only a 7.4% chance of getting into the school for any applicant and a 92.6% chance of being rejected. They said they would only let people in until the class was full, but certainly they will have to go over that number because probably not everyone accepted will attend.

May the odds be ever in your favor?

You should be happy you already made that 7.4% 😀 And I love that you made a hunger games reference, because I definitely made one when we were standing outside our first MMI room - to me it was like being a tribute waiting to be shot up those tubes to start fighting  But it ended up being nothing like that....THANK GOD.

2200 apps?! Dang son. I wonder how many people were in state vs out

Oh, I most certainly am. I'm blown away by it.

Unfortunately no, I finished my undergrad degree five years ago so the letters I had from then are expired or at the very least....too old? I would think a more recent review of my character would be preferred. What is your take?

To be honest, I'm not familiar with your particular situation so I don't know. My suggestion would be contacting each of the schools that have a requirement like this, and asking if what you have is good enough. I know some schools will take into consideration specific situations.
